Hi Becky! Was watching the "chukkar" video where you and your MIL were talking about how it's difficult it is to switch how many you cook for. When my daughter was 19, she worked as a cook in a retirement home. They had a really good chicken salad recipe, so I kept asking her to make it at home. Finally she just got so frustrated, and said "But Mom, I don't know how to cook for less than 200!" True Story! Lol!

I share your vlogs regularly on my FB timeline encouraging my friends to subscribe and then share my post about you on their timelines too. You are so thorough and informative. I look forward to each vlog that you post and look forward to you having a million subscribers!!!🙌👏Question...have any of your stores taken veggie seeds off the shelves and ceasing selling them. In my area of Southern Virginia, for a time, Lowe's and Home Depot stopped selling vegetable seeds, but now are again. But our local Rose's Discount Outlet Stores had stopped for over a year and won't start back up according to their manager. I know Michigan state's governor mandated ceasing buying vegetable seeds and slips at the beginning of Covid...for a time. I've been suggesting to all my Facebook friends to buy veggie seeds everytime they see them and also to order them online while they can because they may cease the sale of them again according to what I've researched. I put mine in a zip loc bag and keep them in the freezer. Continued success!!!😊

Oh also, don't be embarrassed about the chickens. My chickens have free access to my back yard as well. I had the best intentions of keeping them in their run, but the just looked so sad in there. Spoiled babies!
Seriously though, you should do a video on your girls. Most people getting into chickens are going to have basic set ups like we do, and having it look approachable is a good thing. Not everyone can afford a super nice coop and run. We repurposed a 10 ×10 dog kennel that we used to use as a catio. It works and it was free. 😊

Missed the livestream, but glad I saw this today. I’m in central Illinois. Last year I experimented growing potatoes in 20 gallon smart bag containers. They did really well. I was happy with what I grew, but the potatoes definitely get bigger and there’s more of a yield when planted in the ground. If you didn’t have the option of an in ground garden- growing them in the smart bags is a great option. I also grew some cherry tomato plants in the smart bag containers that did well too. This was the first year I grew in the Greenstalk vertical garden container. I had 30 pockets to experiment with. I planted beets, green beans, basil, oregano, yellow squash, sweet red snacking peppers, cilantro, some other herbs, and strawberries. I was amazed at how much you can grow in this system. If you have limited space but plenty of sunlight- this is also a great option. Everything did good except the beets. Root vegetables didn’t work out too good in the Greenstalk. We also had a lot of damage from the squash bugs and Japanese beetles. I haven’t watched all the video yet- so you ma6 have mentioned this- but have you tried Hydroponics? I have an Aerogarden that I can grow vegetable in my house. No dirt needed. I’ve grown herbs, tomatoes, peppers, and lettuce with great success. I’m getting some stuff planted this week when my seeds get here. Looking forward to this challenge. Thanks for your excellent content. I really appreciate how much research you do into the subjects you cover. I’ve learned so much here and I’ve become more excited about gardening and getting more organized with my planning and cooking meals ahead and freezing them. Thank you Becky.

Hi Becky, always love your videos. Even though it's summer here ( Victoria, Australia) busy preserving, I started the pantry challenge, to deal with the 103kg of foraged plums that I preserved in vacola jars in 2020. Been putting it off.. so many jars and what on earth was I thinking! So the yellow plums will become jam and jelly and the red plums into smokey bbq sauce. Foraged some crab apples the other week so made crab apple liquor, crab apple vinegar from scratch ( bubbling away nicely, so far). Became brave and made a sour dough master ( her name is Saffron) baking waffles, bread, scones, cake with the sourdough nearly everyday. Made your sour cream recipe last night( so yummy) had it with salmon cakes with caramelised onions, chilli sauce, green salad tonight. Getting back into the garden, to late for summer crops but will be planting garlic soon and prepping soil for spring.( Your seed orgainiser was an amazing idea and efficient with space).
The above creations have been due to the affect you have had in my life in regards to food, gardening and cooking. I lost my way, lost confidence, had a fear of failure. You have been an inspiration and have reinvigorated my passions and to not be embarrassed by having a "full pantry". "Store what you use and use what you store"
    Thank you again, sincerely Vivienne.

Oh my gosh , Becky. I got those vertical pots at the Dollar Tree for $1 each. I got 18 and made three towers of 6 each. Each tray has 5, so there’s 30 plants I put in each tower. I put some roller wheels on from there too. One is all basil, one is strawberries and one miscellaneous herbs. I’m not sure if they still have them because I got them a couple years ago. You’re right about watering them, you just water the top level and it trickles down to the other levels. I think I spent a total of $30 for 3 towers and the wheels. I got one extra to turn upside down for the base. I hope your subscribers can find them there and try their hands at container and vertical gardening. I think you just have to remember that the smaller containers and vertical pots really do need worm castings and/or fertilizer because of their small sizes. I absolutely love them for herbs. I’m in SoCal and the direct sun here can sometimes literally cook the herbs, et al, right on the plants, so it’s nice to spin them around to minimize direct sun exposure on some more delicate herbs. I’m going to use all three for herbs this year, especially basil, since requests for my different pestos has grown. Btw, I tried your green onion tops pesto and OMGOSH, so good and everyone loves it!

Hi Becky! Sorry I missed your live. Cilantro does well in semi shade and does not like heat, kinda like spinach or lettuce.
For compost building, call your local coffee shops for the coffee grounds, and tree service companies often offer free compost you just pay for them to load in your container, truck or trailer.
Also, dryer lint is ever abundant and is good for compost and also a good fire starter as well.

Last year I grew all my peppers in grow bags, 2 peppers per 10-15 gal bag, and it worked great! Also did my dwarf or container tomatoes and eggplant in large pots. I wouldn't put more than one tomato in a pot because even determinate tomatoes can get pretty big (make sure you have big cages for the non container varieties), unless it says it's dwarf or container size... even then only in a huge pot would I do more than one.
Really looking forward to growing some of these along w you! ❤️ 🌱 6b Spokane WA

    Drainage hole/soil loss tip:
In container gardening, it's common to have erosion loss of the soil. Because there are drainage holes, some of the soil is washed away through the holes each time you water. We all know how expensive good potting soil can be, so it's super helpful to protect that investment. Use some gardening/landscaping cloth to line the bottom of your container. It allows water to drain, but will prevent soil loss. In a pinch, coffee filters will also work, but of course, these will break down over time and have to be replaced (which is supremely inconvenient, but could work if you're just wanting to try out a couple containers for one season and go from there). 🤗
I'm bummed I missed the live, but I'm so excited we're talking about the small space gardening now! I'm a FT RVer, so this is just perfect for us. Container gardening is definitely underrated, I think. It's really amazing what you can do with a small space if you get creative. I'm looking forward to this series! ❤️

Work in any flavour ingredients into whipped cream, whipped egg whites to boost volume and soften. Put in freezer, hand turn one or two times with spoon to prevent solid items falling (ie crushed walnuts or chopped strawberries).

My Mom always planted cilantro she didn’t have any problems, what she did was she planted the cilantro in a wooden round planter with a drainage catch bowl underneath the pot. She kept in in full sun light on the back patio. The key is to not let it dry out. The wood holds water, and the dish at the bottom also holds water so on those hot summer day’s it stays moist. Also rabbit poop is an amazing fertilizer, just mix it fresh into the soil. Doing what my Mom did, I do not have any problem growing cilantro. She also would keep her seeds. Try a verity of seeds, also look in your spice cupboard and the cilantro seed will work just fine. My friends daughter keeps bunnies and she supplies me with an endless amount of fertilizer the best I have ever used. I just love your channel. Also instead of buying the planting bags which for the most part only really give you one season of growing. I use the canvas grocery bags. They come in all size and are cheap and every one has a bunch in the truck of their cars. They work great, because they drain well and you already have them at home.

Love watching you! I really want to live somewhat like you do! I'm 62, slightly disabled, I sold my Florida home I just couldn't maintain the mortgage and upkeep alone and ill, any longer! So I sold and bought a tiny mobile home on some land and I'm excited to see what I am able to accomplish. I'm moving to the 2.5 acres in NC and I'm so excited to start gardening and establish a home for a few hens for eggs. I have to have elevated beds as I'm not able to get on ground level, hopefully I can afford to construct at least a couple. But I love learning about all the ways you preserve food for your family! I am excited to at least get started and do what I can! It will be just me alone, so wish me luck! Thank you for so much good info!!

    • @tjeanvlogs9894

I farm from a wheelchair. A cheap way to do raised beds is in a ring of chicken wire lined with a few layers of cardboard.
Drive in posts along the outside. If on grass, a layer of cardboard on the bottom of the beds are less than 24". Fill the bottom half within woody material. No bigger than your thumb if the bed is shallow, on a hill, or in a rainy area. Sprinkle some compost over the top. Then add spent straw, leaves, shredded paper/cardboard/sawdust until about 9 inches from the top. Add 6 inched of compost and good soil mix. Plant out be and add mulch over the top.
Keep adding mulch and compost as the material shrinks. Do not line with landscape fabric! Beyond being expensive, you want contact with the ground to allow the bugs and microbes to make a home. All of the filler will slowly decompose and make great soil. Plan out sitting spots and build the beds around them.
I transfer from my chair to the ground to work. With a pair of waxed/oiled canvas work pants and some large stepping stones, logs, rocks, up turned buckets and milk crates, I can do a day in the garden. If accessing the bathroom from the far side is an issue, consider a dry composting toilet (bucket loo) tucked behind something. You can run hoses to a t post and add a spigot or scatter water buckets/barrels.
The idea is to front load so you don't do a lot of back and forth. You may need a few sets of garden tools stuck in lidded bins. Wheelchair friendly paths are great for using a barrow or cart. Have a few people local to you who can come and carry or otherwise be a hand contactable by the mobile phone you will carry with you.
The mobile phone is your most important safety tool. If you get stuck, being able to do more than yell is helpful. You will end up in undignified position at some date. That's just part of being disabled or getting old. Before I put in the designated sitting spots, I tipped myself into the raised bed I was building and couldn't get out. Had to call EMS as all of my neighbors where not home. All I needed was something to hold onto to pull myself out. The youngster spent a few minutes being tall and strong, and became friends. The fire house got some fresh veg, and we had a great laugh.
Finally, look into the permaculture ideas around zones. The idea about working smarter not harder, for us disabled and older, it's the difference between possible and not possible.
Pls note. I am doing this on a hill. My 3/4th acre is only flat at the house and parking area. Most of my beds are c shaped. Level with the path on one side and two to three feet high on the other. My paths snake through the yard just off the contour with steps for the able bodied who want to go the straightest path.
      And plant flowers too

@@janiceinFL I have a mobile chicken coop (Chickasaw) built on a bicycle trailer that can attach to my chair. I use premier one portable netting and move the birds regularly. If you cannot move the normal netting contact premier one and they will work with you. I am limited to 10#. I use a plastic mallet to "step in" the posts. The roof of my shaw comes off completely. The walls lift off the base. Do not use 1/2 hardware cloth because crap doesn't fall through. 1 by 2 works. My roosts are loosely placed, so I can take the thing on completely apart. The ramp and door are the same and at the hitch side with milk crate nest boxes at the other end.
We are working on a net cart because right now it's a lot of back and forth. I move a third of the nets foot print at a time. So move a side up to the coop one section at a time. Move in the afternoon evening so when the birds go ranging, they will be heading to bed soon anyway.
The biggest thing is not what people are doing, but why. Then figure out how to get to that why your way. The bed I described is an encased hugelmound, or layered lasagna bed. The water buckets and barrels make microclimates to help tomatoes and pepper on the south side and shield lettuce on the north.
Start small, close to the house where you will go by it every day. Park you birds where you want the next bed. Toss in wood chips, saw dust, food scraps and let them build you compost. Perma pasture RUclips channel has a composting chicken run that works even in wet areas (I'm in the maritime Pac NW). They are hilled territory too. So think paths with beds interspersed with micro pastures (just enough for the birds inside a net) scattered all around. It's not a berry patch but a fruit/ nut tree, with some berry bushes, and some flowers with some veg tucked in next to a path with a yard just big enough for a picnic or the birds for a week. Next to more of the same as you meander around your place.
The permaculture idea that problems or solutions looked at backwards is apt. You don't have a slug problem but a lack of slug eaters. Letting the ducks out for an hour in the early am will curb any slug issues. Then feed in them to get them back into the net. Or better yet. Refill their kiddie pool. They will come arunning. The Nummies bucket aka kitchen compost bin, will lead them down the street if they somehow go walk about.
