preempted by two full episodes of flashbacks, inner monologues, taunts and/or conversation, and a second, less important, more annoying subplot that keeps interjecting itself.
11:23 I'm surprised you didn't mention/notice that Zain hit the Fly Guy with his Fsmash, extending the hitbox during the hitlag which probably resulted in Rishi getting hit.
Great insight! There were a ton of other small situations like that one which I would've loved to breakdown further, but I didn't want to end up with an obscenely long video. This entire set was rich with crazy interactions that could easily be their own videos, but I was looking to make the narrative for this analysis focused more on the single frame swings. Thanks for pointing that out though!
@@yepyep266 lasting longer technically, although its more like his animation was paused due to hitlag and resumed when the hitlag ended, causing Rishi to get hit
I don't think the d-tilt by Zain at 6:05 was a technical error. It seemed like he thought that Rishi would try to up-b into him after seeing the whiffed dair, to which the an appropriate response would be to cc d-tilt.
what a phenomenal video holy fuck. Melee was my first fighting game before i tried traditional fighters and I always thought "frame data is irrelevant in melee unlike the traditional fighters" but, in one video that popped up on my recommended feed, you disproved that. Stunning work.
You're in luck! I just voiced a new episode which I'll get around to editing soon - unfortunately these tend to take a bit of time to put together, but I'm hoping I can produce them more frequently in the near future!
This video is the first I've seen of you, and I don't understand why you're not more popular. This video is exceptional! The script is very well written, the editing keeps you glued to the screen, it packs in a crazy amount of information, and the video is overall very engaging. Subbed.
Some awesome info here. I love the series and wish more could come out, but I understand the amount of research and editing that goes into them, which I equally respect. Keep making these!
Such high production quality, an amazing job as always. This series has always reminded me the Tactical Teamwork series done by Ciderhelm for league. (ruclips.net/video/93YMYIXiOIw/видео.html) Just high quality analysis with high production quality explained in an interesting and concise way. Love it, keep up the amazing work
Only 5~ throws each? Man usually Marth is fiending for fthrow fthrow fsmash at those low %s in the ditto, its one of the things that makes the dittos so volatile
You're absolutely right, there were only a small number of successful throws in this game though! Keep in mind there were around 28 grab *attempts* in the game - so dividing that by the ~3.5 minute game would give us about 8 grab attempts/minute, which still seems like a pretty good amount to me!
I like the video but you make a few mistakes, such as up air being -1 on shield, which is only the case if you hit a tipper up air and hit it on the final frame before landing. In this situation it's more like -5. Also the dair vs fair analysis at 7:40 esh fails to account for the fact that Marth's fair comes out above him on frame 4, and therefore can't hit horizontally spaced opponents until later frames. You didn't mention the importance of the Shy Guy at 11:24 either. Overall the video is still excellent and was a very entertaining and insightful watch.
A whole series consisting of episodes where you narrate one sole match by the frame? It never ceases to amaze me the sheer volume of free time white people have to put toward things like this.
The chart in the video (around 13:25) shows the trajectory path for a Marth getting hit with Dolphin Slash. So not to say that he would’ve won, but Rishi had the potential to live with no DI since there were frames where he was actionable after being hit.
Just at a glance, it seems Rishi needed to wait slightly to hit the reverse Dolphin Slash, so I can't say for certain. Since this only came down to one frame, it's possible that he could've done the Up-B earlier!
turndownforwalt You said his standing grab is "the fastest in the cast," which makes it sound more significant than it is. Just an odd way to phrase it, especially for those of us who has less knowledge of frame data and matchups.
@@Kevin-xd2yv the only way your comment makes sense is if you paused it as soon as you heard the words and didn't keep watching. The very next sentence is that it ties with high tiers like fox falco and shiek, and about how the speed is less important then the range.
Pretty much exactly what I thought back in 2009 when I first took Smash competitively seriously. It's really fun to play Melee, but Jesus Christ it takes *all* of your free time and then some to be "great" at the game. Not my top priority, unfortunately.
@@Cheezmonka one day i spend like 3 hours just practicing with link (wavedash and l-canceling) and then i was told that link suck ass and no one uses him, that's when i dropped the game
To be MIOM top 100, yeah, you need to be naturally gifted and/or grind super hard. But to be competent at the game isn't terribly demanding at all. My friends at college got pretty decent by just casually playing each other over time. I think at most we spent 10 hours each grinding tech over that time period. That's what I've always found so beautiful about Melee; it's a game you learn best by playing. As for the link argument: yes, it's true, link is fairly low ranked, and not many top players use him. but the top 5-10 players continuously say that you can still do very well with a "terrible" character. there are a bunch of relevant ganondorf mains in north america, some even taking wins over top 10 players. as for specifically link, there's a european player sixx who doesn't play awfully much, but is really really good and shows the potential the character has.
This is like watching a narrator in an anime explain a fight as it's happening, and then the narrator says "all this happened in just 30-seconds".

huh. Personally I didn't even notice that lol
it definitely wouldn't have hit Rishi if the pesky food delivery man wasn't there

Do you mean the hitbox groes bigger or live longer?
@@yepyep266 lasting longer technically, although its more like his animation was paused due to hitlag and resumed when the hitlag ended, causing Rishi to get hit
I wonder if you can get hit by the shy guy while it’s in its kind of hitstun.
Im really loving the amount of information and technical analysis not seen by other analysis videos. Keep up the good work man!

This breakdown is nuts man. Very well done.
This was great. Thank you for the excellent analysis
melee is sick
Videos like yours do an amazing job to visualize, using real work examples, how intricate this game is.
This is such a sick series. Keep it up dude!
This video is insanely high quality considering how small your channel is. I really hope to see this channel grow. It is well deserved. Keep it up

Turndownforwalt you are so good

Walt's videos are sick.

What video settings do you use to get melee looking that good? Or are all the shadows post processed?
13:24 did rishi DI out due to trying to input reverse dolphin slash?
How can you tell between port priority and being ahead by one frame?
Good shit dude
Great video, wavey grab stats around 2:30 made me a little motion sick tho :/

Loved the video but Marths grab coming out on frame 7 doesn't mean much since most characters have a frame 7 grab
Right! I wanted that narration to be more focused on Marth's grab range, since he ties with a majority of the cast. Thanks for the comment!

First lul I love your videos
pretty sure Melee is 50 frames a second, not 60
unless you put it in your Wii, then it is sped up to be like 60 fps
