  • What sad news that Chick has passed. Another giant lost. I definitely had not planned on doing a Chick cover, as I feel vastly under-qualified to pull off any of his music. After all, he tended to play with monster drummers. Gary Novak is no exception, and he plays some amazing stuff on "Paint The World", the album this song comes from. I highly recommend checking this record out. It's really good. I was messing with sounds in the Strike module, and realized the kit I built reminded me of Gary's 90's Yamaha sound. So I went for it. This is another song I had never tried to play before yesterday. All sounds come from the Strike module, recorded to my DAW via the stereo outs. I clearly blew the ending. I do not own any rights to this music, nor will I make any money from this video. RIP, Chick. Thank you for all you've done.

      This whole kit is just sounds from the module. I didn't tweak at all I don't think, other than compression to get the levels a little hotter. But I agree, that's a good ride!

      Seems like a good place to see him! And the metric modulation is awesome in this song.

    Great cover! Love Chick.
    Question about the Alesis hi hat that you used to use with the kit. I know they're not nearly as good as the rolands. But are the Alesis ones very unbearable, or would someone who isn't mainly a drummer be able to deal with it? I just want an affordable e kit with 4 toms and a good amount of cymbals so I can do full Rush covers. I'm not mainly a drummer. So I'm not picky on feel. But it's functionality that I worry about. Being able to play those short open and close hi hat hits will be important for Rush. Again great video!

      Thank you! Chick is one of a kind for sure. There are so many factors that go into the electronic hats. I'm no expert, but having played the original Alesis ones and now the Roland, I can say that the Roland are much nicer. I have seen some folks swear they have the Alesis dialed in. I have seen (and also tried myself) the DM10 cymbal with separate DM foot controller. That didn't work for me either. I have done a few Rush covers, but none with the stock Alesis hats, or I would tell you to have a look and compare. I'm a lifelong drummer, and super used to acoustic cymbals. So it's hard to say if you aren't in that boat, you'll be fine with the Alesis. The stock hats functioned fine, I had no issues with them "not working". They just didn't work super well. Even with the Roland, I struggle with some things. Any music that is hi hat heavy...meaning lots of notes or super quick things...I have a hard time getting the articulation right. I'm fairly new to this kit, so I'm sure my settings could be tweeked more. But I also think it's literally different for every drummer. So I guess if you are thinking about the SE, do your best with the stock hats. Really dive into the module and see if you can get the settings to suit you. And just know you might be spending another couple hundred bucks down the road. Sorry for this ramble, especially cause I know it doesn't really answer your question. But best of luck either way!

    I like the videos I was just wondering what do you feel about Superior drummer 3 versus the stock module sounds

      To my ear, the SD3 sounds are better in general.

    That was an excellent jobI! I just ordered this kit yesterday. Does it sound good straight out of the box?

    • @fileundervalued
      @fileundervalued  3 года назад +1

      Thanks man. This kit sounds ok if you just plug it in and play. The best part (theoretically), is that it's very very tweakable. So the more time and patience you put into learning the settings and using them, the better it will be. But especially in terms of the playability, expect to need to do some button pushing to get it great.

      Thank you I i’m getting tomorrow. I also have a Roland TD-25 module and Roland PD-128S. I use the those for practicing. I like to tweak the sounds in the TD-25 it’s very simple. I hope the Alesis is that simple..lol

    also why do you recently start using the stock module sounds more than Superior drummer 3 is it because it's easier to load up or because you like to sound more

    • @fileundervalued
      @fileundervalued  3 года назад

      I like to try to do videos with both, because some people are interested in just hearing what sounds the module is capable of. In this case, I had a kit in the module that reminded me of Gary Novak's sound on this record. So I used that rather than build a new one in SD3.
