This was the perfect review video, thank you for doing this. Every other ones where obstacle avoidance while following. I'm totally sold I'm buying one for sure
Hey man I really like the video...it actually answers my questions on this drone..I got my mavic air for Christmas and this is my first quality drone and I have only had it in the air 5 times so far....I look forward to seeing more videos from you
I really appreciate seeing the APAS and obstacle avoidance in practical situations, so great job on showing that off. Get rid of the music in the video, I wanted to turn my volume down so I didn't have to hear it, but then I couldn't understand what you were saying so I turned it up. If you must use some music at least make the volume of the music low enough so I can hear you talking over it. Overall thanks for posting the video showing these features at work! I still liked and subscribed for the good content pal.
Thanks for watching, glad you found it useful! Thanks also for the feedback. Sometimes its hard for me to judge what the final product will look/sound like on many devices. It probably sounds very different on a cell phone than on my studio rig! Thanks again!
No problem pal, and to be honest I wouldn't know anything about that struggle because I don't make videos lol. I watched this video on my MacBook Pro via the built in speakers, and most volume gripes I have are when I'm using that device. Just watched this again on my TV with surround sound and volume levels between music and speech were way better defined. So I learned something else - don't bitch about volume issues when watching videos on my MacBookPro lol
Hehe, Im always happy for any feedback. Im always looking for ways to change and improve, after all, Im making videos for the world to watch on MANY different devices, not just for me on my studio rig. Happy FLying!
That’s a really good test boss.but it did pretty good for me on the mountain bike trail. But my trail here in florida is not as dense as the one you was waking through. Ours as more sunshine come through and the trees are more far apart, so I think it all depends on where you are mountain biking or backpacking. Nice test though.
Thanks! Yes, the forests around here are a bit dense, and being winter, the leafy trees are all just bare with lots of small twigs sticking out everywhere. Since they are so dense, light penetration creates drastic contrast between the light and dark. Im also a nature photographer and that is always a challenge. Drones especially suffer from dynamic range trouble, and the cameras and sensors used in the obstacle avoidance even more so.
It depends on how clear of a path you have. APAS does a good job dodging occasional branches and stuff, but if there is a LOT of obstacles all over it has trouble finding a path and gets stuck. Scout it out, maybe a few short tests, ahead of time so you have an idea of the conditions.
I found one you tube video where the guy says if the camera is set to 48 FPS or more, then the APAS won’t work. I have not seen this in any other tutorials or the ops manual, or just plain googling? Do you know if this is true?
I just got mine and am still figuring it out, but I noticed noticed that there were sensor sensitivity settings and am wondering if you could change the settings to allow you to get through thicker forests. Would be amazing if you could make an additional video about it if so.
Nice testing. Ever thought of doing a noise test on the air compared to a phantom 3, spark and the new air? I have a 3 and really like the portability of the air and spark and leaning to the air. Any thoughts?
I don't have access to a P3 or spark anymore now unless I borrow one. But just from what I can tell, the Air is about as loud as the spark. The sound of the motors/Props is a bit high pitched and really carries. I was flying over a mountain top about 1400 feet up and 2000+ out and I could hear the wine of the props from the ground! The Mavic Pro (with platinum props, and Im sure the platinum mavic) are quieter and less obtrusive. About 400 up and a few hundred out I can barely hear it.
Do you think prop guards would have made any noticeable difference in this flight test, or would the limb still possibly have been able to get to your blade? Basically, are they worth it?
Probably not. Prop guards are ok for keeping your props safe if you bump into something solid. But things like tree branches actually get caught up even EASIER in the prop guards.
It clipped it pretty good. I dont think I'd say its any more brittle than other DJI props. DJI props are actually pretty flexible compared to other drones ive messed with
Great video... Realistic setting the right expectations. Would love to see a Litchi mission mission with dorked up way points test avoidance. L is in beta and no-one posted a mission yet.
The heart of what I do is really trying to stay neutral and impartial and share with you, all my friends, my true findings as best as I can. I couldn't locate the typos you were referring to though. Happy flying!
The first test shows the drone fly strait pass you on the right side. You were not standing directly in front of it. How do I know this? The drones shadow remains in a direct path without shifting to either side. Also, the drone camera show the drone going to the left of you and passes on the right side viewed on your distant camera.
I shoot the same shots at multiple angles and multiple times. In editing, I use the shots that best show what i am trying to illustrate. They dont always match up. So yes, some of the shots are different. I dont have 4+ cameras and a big camera crew (only me) to do multi shooting.. the life of a small time youtuber!
Nice video. Are you sure you enabled APAS during active track? That’s a different setting then the one on the main page. Enable obstacle avoidance in active track. Just checking. Great video.
Good thinking, but yes. It was enabled. On second thought, I probably should have shown people that in the video. It would be an easy thing for people to overlook. Cheers!
Yes,, it's called profil mode tracking.. but obstacle avoidance will disabled in order to maintain angle of view from subject. The pros about profil mode is drone will follow with fix angle. From side, front or wherever you want. And profil mode will allow you to reach max speed tracking due to obstacle avoidance being disabled. So use it carefully.. In this video, he used Trace profile tracking. Drone only follow from behind with limited speed allowed due to obstacle avoidance being enabled.
Still not sensative enough yet better system than the previous drones. The real challenge would be avoiding the powerlines. Which i think the air will fail to avoid.
Your battery was at 12 percent, that battery is toast now. You need to land at 20 percent at the lowest, lower than that and the battery starts to get damaged and won’t hold as much charge
I have heard this before, and generally i dont fly much below the 15%ish mark. But what you said is no where on DJI official battery maintenance page. store.dji.com/guides/battery-care-important-think/
@@InfiniteTDigital that's wierd, it should be. I always land at 20 percent, and store it at 50 percent. If you overdrain any battery, especially physically large ones, the life span can decrease a lot.
I hit the top of a tree, so...my mavic air went into a death roll and sent it in for a replacement (thank goodness for insurance) don't trust APAS near the tops of trees...trust me.
If I understand your question, I have seen many "demonstration" videos of the APAS (Advanced Pilot Assistance System) that the New Mavic Air has were people simply show you what it does. But I have only seen a few videos of people actually putting it to practical use, say dodging a tree limb, or a person or hard obstacle. Then "torture testing" it in a dense forest.
Yes, I agree. It did well with singular objects, but when there is a lot of stuff, like branches, sticking out all over at different angles, it just gets "confused" and hovers in place. Cheers!
Best Review of mavic air optical avoidance 💓 Love this, NOW I AM IN LOVE WITH MAVIC AIR
Thank you! Fly safe!
Infinite-T Digital 😇❤
Looks cool. I cant wait to see how they improve on this technology in future models!
Yes, I'd love to see where this goes. Im sure it will save some people a lot of trouble.
This was the perfect review video, thank you for doing this. Every other ones where obstacle avoidance while following. I'm totally sold I'm buying one for sure
Nicely done! Thorough, impartial and too the point. Keep it up, Cheers
Thank you sir!
Nice! Love that ApeASS graphic..ROFL

Nice one buddy!! sure miss that beautiful Forest!
smittyboy1 thanks! I know I'd miss this place if I was in your shoes. Take care!
Cool tech, cant wait to see the improved versions of it in the MP2 and P5
You and me both Dude
looking to buy a mavic soon and you helped a lot, thanx.
Very helpful review indeed..I need one of these now 😃
Got Mine Yesterday, In Love With The Flame Red Beast :D
Rock on and fly safe!

APE-ASS? That's funny right there I tell ya. Best test of APAS I have seen to date, thanks a lot .
Rofl, Thanks Buddy!
This is a really practical video. I wonder if the Mavic air would work for White water rafting if it would be able to track?
It depends on how clear of a path you have. APAS does a good job dodging occasional branches and stuff, but if there is a LOT of obstacles all over it has trouble finding a path and gets stuck. Scout it out, maybe a few short tests, ahead of time so you have an idea of the conditions.

Great video. Thanks for testing it in the forest. I need to try it out:-)
Thank you! Give it a shot, let me know your results!
Infinite-T Digital I will. Only need to get it back... It falls into water due a problem a week ago. I hope DJI can fix it.
thanks for this easy to understand video

steve
thanks for watching!
I thought APAS didn't work when in flight mode?! I'll have to confirm that today. Nice video.
You can use it in auto-follow mode, but you have to enable it in the settings.
Nice testing. Ever thought of doing a noise test on the air compared to a phantom 3, spark and the new air? I have a 3 and really like the portability of the air and spark and leaning to the air. Any thoughts?

You must try skydio r1, that has just totally nailed Dji in terms of obstacle avoidance. The true follow me aka active track drone.
I would LOVE to try it! It looks awesome! If only I could convince them to send Little Ol me a review unit!
it's only $2500 lol
Yeah but expensive as hell
Great video!! Thanks.
Thanks for watching!
HEY ! nice video :) what is the white and black band on your fone screen ?
Thanks! Thats an over exposure warning. Its a feature you can enable thats show if any section of your shot is over exposed (washed out).
I just go a Mavic Pro and want to find a place to fly in the Federal Way/Seattle area. Do you have any good spots that I can fly and not be bothered?
Do you think prop guards would have made any noticeable difference in this flight test, or would the limb still possibly have been able to get to your blade? Basically, are they worth it?
Probably not. Prop guards are ok for keeping your props safe if you bump into something solid. But things like tree branches actually get caught up even EASIER in the prop guards.
How much did it hit that branch to chip the prop. Would youbsay the props are a little brittle? I havent hit anything with mine yet

Thank you! I have not tried lichi yet. I may have to add it to the list! Happy flying!
Great impartial test video. Might touch-up "lest" and "would", no biggies.
The heart of what I do is really trying to stay neutral and impartial and share with you, all my friends, my true findings as best as I can. I couldn't locate the typos you were referring to though. Happy flying!
Good test friend and good video fabulous
Thanks my friend!

Infinite-T Digital please can you show where that is in the menu?
Did you even have apas on? And should of been a firmware to be accurate
Great video!!
Thanks Sir!
the test did not show if it detects thin rope or just thing branch
Do you think it would follow a four wheeler down an open road. Maybe 20mph?
Very likely, it only had trouble in low light and with small thin objects like tiny twigs.
Great
Thanks for sharing this one :)
Thank you for watching! Happy flying!
Nice its amazing drone
Shine Bright Studio Photography thanks!
What happened to your camera?
I’m going to Antarctica soon should I get Mavic pro platinum or air?
I would recommend the Pro. It has better battery life and I know it can stand up to some pretty tough conditions
Interesting video but whose soundtrack made viewing an unpleasant experience.
Very good!! 😁
Thanks Sir!
If I could put some blades on the bottom maybe it could mow my lawn?
Drone can keep in front of you in following me function. ?
Yes,, it's called profil mode tracking.. but obstacle avoidance will disabled in order to maintain angle of view from subject.

The mavic air incredible technology
It really is. I am very excited for the Mavic 2 to see what improvements have been made!
It is! I have a Mavic 2 Pro on its way, stay tuned for full testing of it! Everything points to AMAZING!
Still not sensative enough yet better system than the previous drones. The real challenge would be avoiding the powerlines. Which i think the air will fail to avoid.
I agree, its a good step in the right direction. I'm not sure about power lines either. As with this video, I ended up clipping some small branches!

Can it avoid from the side i was waiting for this test and u skipped it
Ace s I don’t think there are any avoidance sensors on the side👍
Price point? There is no drone at any price point that will successfully navigate that.
The all new Skideo (spelling??) drone can actually do it, but its 2,500 USD.
APAS TEST NEED CORRECTION 😮👌👍
starts from 5:05
That's cool . Can it give me a hiar cut lol
Possibly, but you might not like it!
The mavic air is good for short distance very short that's it
I pretty much agree, It can go a surprising range in optimum conditions.. but I usually fly in less then optimum conditions!
I hit the top of a tree, so...my mavic air went into a death roll and sent it in for a replacement (thank goodness for insurance) don't trust APAS near the tops of trees...trust me.
Agreed, sorry to here it. Hope youre up and running soon!
Skydio still the best
an honest review... good for you
DJI didnt send you a drone then..? lol
Look at him use the r stick
What's: 'A real would test of apas....'

why u wear glasses lol on test
