Always cool to watch your old vids , not to sound negative, but you’ve got so much better over the years , video quality wise I mean , but there always value in watching
Brian I love your old videos Man you made some great videos thanks for sharing this I want to go back to look at some of your old videos I remember this is years ago this video you and me were a lot younger than
This is the first time I have ever bought something based on a RUclipsr's review of the thing. This knife is a beast. I think I am going to make a new handle for it. I have wood from a place that's very special to me and it's stabilized and begging to be made into matching stocks for my Bowie and my 1911. And I'm making a leather Scout sheath to match my wet-molded shoulder holster. Dead sexy. For $27 you can't beat it. (One suggestion though... don't talk about how people "don't want to abuse their tools". My brain wrote a whole slew of jokes when I heard that...)
The Knife Center has this Bowie listed for right at 26 bucks!! Good Gawd!! I am expecting deliver today of my Mora Light My Fire Knife and and that's what I paid for that knife. As far as the price on this Uncle Henry Bowie, one can;t beat that price with a club!!!! Again...thatks Bryan. Another great product review!
+Charles Larson you need to buy one:) I was impressed:) Charles if not just for wacking the weeds and willows down:) This cost the price of 7 gallons of gas here in Alaska at $3;50 a gallon still
+40belowful Hello 40 below!! ;-) I really liked that Bowie and it's price but I already have a great very old Bowie knife with real a stag handle and German steel blade. I picked it up back in the late 60's and it was old then. I had a knife smith restore it and he told me that while he was working on it a few people offered to buy it! Haw! I had a beautiful hand made, hand stitched leather, sheath made for it by a friend who is master leather craftsman, in sheaths, holsters gun rigs scabbards, etc. Total package is now a work of art. BTW...the sheath is a cross draw.
Survival On Purpose There is one good thing about the Nylon sheath IMHO, It'll work better for long term storage of a Carbon steel Bowie than a Leather one would and it won't gradually rust your knife out if you keep it in it. Granted though it is a visual eyesore compared to some of those gorgeous leather ones out there, no question about that.
thank you for showing us to Uncle Henry Bowie knife the 181 UAH you did a great job really appreciate all that it's pretty balanced too thank you ever so much have a great holiday coming up I'm going to get me one
that's not a knife no wait, that is a knife. I can tell you really enjoyed this one. I see your still the man at throwing knifes. I expect to see you in the future carnival show lol. beautiful knife and great review. take care and all the best bud
Finally sorted out my youtube account & can make comments again! Just wanted to say I've become a huge fan of your channel thanks to your chilled our style & informative content. Thanks for uploading! You've gotten me interested in bushcraft & exploring nature again.
This knife is much better than the very similar Model 184UH. After hetting this 181, I also bought the latter. I decided to take a photo of them, together, so I chopped into a cedar stump to use it as a "prop". Lol, the photos came out great. BUT - the edge on the 184 developed two waved in two chops. Didn't notice until I got the knives home to clean the sap off the edges. The one you reviewed here seems fine. But the 184 UH -? Fail. They both live in nice leather sheaths now, but one can come with me to the desert and the other stays home. Congratulations on a great channel.
You are a class act bryan i love your videos you remind me so much of my father it is unbelievable he sounded and looked just like you gave me a mini hunter as my first knife when i was 5 and i have had my heart in knives ever sense.
your not rambling, talking about movies like the long riders is why i tune into your channel, I went and watched it later, and had a a good time. Keep up the good work. :) If you dig that one, check out the buck 124, my personal favorite blade, that pair with a 14 dollar sears craftsman hatchet, is my "made in america" combo. LOL. keep rambling on
I bought one and iam impressed:) NOW that's a knife Mate:):) you know the sheath that came with my gerber was just like that back in 1987. I thought it needed a better sheath then:) This is a real bargain:) for sure!
the 7CR17MoV steel is a chinese version of 440A with added vanadium which Increases strength, wear resistance, and increases toughness so it will better withstand "Balance Testing" I can't find thickness anywhere on the web. It looks about the same as my Schrade Old Timer Bowie which is 5/32 thick or about 0.156 thick. If the handle construction is like my Old Timer Bowie, It's fairly easy to remove and replace. (Which I did with black linen micarta on my OTB ) If you're someone who likes to modify your knives Let me know and I will send you some micarta so you can put more durable handle on it. You're spot on when you say it screams out for a leather sheath. I understand Schrade keeping the cost down
Nice review! But I kinda wish it had a leather sheath just for aesthetic and traditional purposes ya know but the nylon is pretty decent so really I have no complaints.
Same here. I've got a drawer full of bowies ranging from 30 dollars to 100 and none get used like they should. Shame you and me ain't neighbors we'd make some long range testin videos
So I'm thinking a video on proper balance testing how to skills is in order. Also a Scout project on leather sheath making would be a good one Good video . Thanks.
Well a Full Tang knife really Cuts good you did a great presentation on this knife I'm definitely going to buy one in Amazon thank you so much for sharing this video I subscribe to your Channel
hey Brian, cool knife:) I have the 1987 Gerber USA made Excalibur bowie knife. brand new still in box. I bought it because it was such a large bowie knife and never used it. It has a 3/8" thick blade on spine.
Hi there. I ordered one. I'm seeing a few people on the reviews at Amazon and on RUclips having their blade break from use. I watched you throw this stick it into a big tree. I'm wondering how yours held up over time with use? thanks
Thanks for the video Bryan! The challenge with feathers using a hollow grind isn't yours alone. I think the grind makes it bite into the wood, which makes it harder to push the blade down the piece of wood at an even thickness.
Thx, good review. I already have the old version of that knife the 1870T, and I love it, looks like I will have to add the new version. I made a good leather sheath, a combo dangler/scout. That knife really screams for a good leather sheath. That nylon sheath is junk.
This knife came in pretty useful on christmas day for scoring the skin on some duck breasts we had alongside acting as an impromptu billhook cutting up wood. Bought it when I was in West yellowstone on holdiay from the Uk.
Survival On Purpose Yes, I saw that when you not-threw it. I just think the design makes it a bad not-throwing knife. As you said, when you didn´t throw it, you risk damaging the tip. :-) I´m having trouble just writing this. How you could do this on camera is beyond me. :-)
I totally agree about the sheath. A BOWIE knife isn't complete without a real leather sheath. Nice... I'd pay an additional 20 to 30 bucks for that since the knife is listed under $35.
Why do you not do reviews on Ontario or Kabar?? For the price of some of these brand name cheapies you could get a decent 1095 high carbon knife that will last a lifetime.
What's up buddy I really like your video and my wife thanks you ordered me one of those today supposed to receive it Sunday I have a couple questions for you have you tried to bend the knife and test its residual ality residual bending effect and how strong is the heat treat if you were to hit that on the side of a stump flat sided would it been that blade I'm interested in box me buddy
Say Heah Brian, I like teaming my knives. This 10" Uncle Henry and the smaller PH knife would make a awesome combo, I just had a Piggyback made for Robert 7 and my Rodent 4, Too bad you don't do Google Plus. I show it tgere, I also have my new Battle Horse Mad Hatter Machete and my Modified Attitude. Nice set too.
Survival On Purpose good blade i have the uncle henry 181 and love it. i dont really go out and use it for. chopping trees but carry has last resort of defense while hunting. love your videos keep it up.
Bryan...good grief what a cool beast!!!!!!! I love it! Makes me want to buy one and move to Australia! Ha! (but then I like my firearms too much to do that) And I agree that it screams for a custom made leather sheath! But then Schrade keeps the price down so it's up to the buyer to make that call. And I like a slight hollow grind, like my Schrade 9N. This Bowie is Old School Cool indeed!!!!!!! Great review and keep on rambling!!!!!! >;)
When a stainless steel knife blade extends over about 7 inches, it starts to get brittle. I understand heat treats and all, but from Uncle Henry, I wouldn't be expecting much.
",,,, That's a knife...." (obligatory Croc.Dundee reference). Good video Brian... a couple of things though. 1st, maybe you can ask Schrade (since you're more important than us peons) LOL...why they (and others) repeatedly neglect the 13-15% of us that are lefties? Knives are usually ambidextrous, but sheaths.... Well, you know. Secondly, regarding the sheath, it looked kinda 'mickey-mouse' in that it didn't look very rigid (to keep it from 'drawing/folding up; when you draw the knife) and I didn't see a lanyard hole for a leg tie (or on the knife for that matter). That, and the attachment point for the belt loop... How's the stitching? All three sides or just a single line on 2 sides? I have a seriously 'evil' little MTech MX-8112 (you should check it out) that is all but useless because of the crappy sheath. Lastly... ramble away my friend.... no one does it as well as you... it's kinda like a "trade mark" or 'sumpin.... Take care Pal. p.s.- that knife throwing of yours is a seriously cool skill.... have you ever provided any instruction as to how? just askin'.....
I don't know why so many knife manufacturers neglect left-handed people. So of Schrade's sheaths are ambidextrous. I'll have to take another look and get back to you on the stitching. And you know I would never recommend throwing knives, in fact here's a video about that: ruclips.net/video/3Yh7uH-tthI/видео.html
Hey Brain. I like the knife a lot. I don't have any pine trees around here, so can you please send me a piece of fat wood to make a handle for my fire steel 🔥???. Great videos.
Yes he was supposed to fighting sam star over . belle star . I was raised less than 2 miles from one of the James gang and belle stars hide outs . Big man in town , bought the heart estate and bulldozed the big 2 story hotel sized house down . Floyd heart wrote a small book about his youth there
Survival On Purpose I was chopping a tree with it and the blade just split. the tree wasn't giant it was only 3 ish inches thick. I haven't talked to sharade yet.
You're right you're not as good as people I've seen making feather sticks guess what you're better than the people I've seen making feather sticks your feather sticks look very nice good job
I bought that exact one from a hunting store for $125 and the blade snapped when I hit a piece of wood one time, found out I could buy it for $29 on the internet
Always cool to watch your old vids , not to sound negative, but you’ve got so much better over the years , video quality wise I mean , but there always value in watching
That's old school cool for sure! i'm with you on the leather sheath.
Yeah, it would take 1/2 a cow it's so big ,-)
Brian I love your old videos Man you made some great videos thanks for sharing this I want to go back to look at some of your old videos I remember this is years ago this video you and me were a lot younger than
Loved it because you tested mine for me. Am pleased with the results. Glad I didnt waste my money
Glad to help.
Such a good review I just purchased one of these from Amazon, $23.27 was the cost plus shipping of course, can't wait to get my hands on it.
Hope you enjoy it!
I have the sharde version in the old timer 1870t with a identical blade. Its such a well balanced knife for the price when found.
I think it is a bargain, for sure.
I just bought one from Midway USA for 19.00
Def old school cool. Good review.
For sure. Thanks.
Hey man! That's a great idea! Get them boys started off right and thanks for leading a troop. Kids now especially need good guidance
+357bullfrog thanks
Bone handle and leather sheath would make such a difference. But what a knife as is!
Yes it is. Bone and leather would probably double the price.
That's one awesome knife to have at all times...
thank you for showing us to Uncle Henry Bowie knife the 181 UAH you did a great job really appreciate all that it's pretty balanced too thank you ever so much have a great holiday coming up I'm going to get me one
+Autumn Watts it's a pretty cool knife
I love mine, you're right about the sheath, it should have a leather sheath.
I love how they shaped the tip. I think Bowie would approve, but not the sheath. The original's blade might have been about the same thickness.
Yeah, I think it's pretty authentic as far as the design.
Once again you've managed to impress me thanks for the great vid SOP
Thanks for watching!
that's not a knife no wait, that is a knife. I can tell you really enjoyed this one. I see your still the man at throwing knifes. I expect to see you in the future carnival show lol. beautiful knife and great review. take care and all the best bud
I really like the look and shape of the blade.
Finally sorted out my youtube account & can make comments again! Just wanted to say I've become a huge fan of your channel thanks to your chilled our style & informative content. Thanks for uploading! You've gotten me interested in bushcraft & exploring nature again.
Thanks. Just get in the woods and have fun.
I plan to buy one of these and customize it. New handle scales, new guard, add some details to the blade.
Did you do it!?
@@KillingTrust nope, I had a custom knife made instead.
I am getting mine from Amazon. Thanks for an excellent review!
Thanks for watching.
Just bought this based on your review. Thanks very much for the video.
I'm glad it helped.
This knife is much better than the very similar Model 184UH. After hetting this 181, I also bought the latter. They both live in nice leather sheaths now, but one can come with me to the desert and the other stays home. Congratulations on a great channel.
A bowie knife sheath should be one Jim would be proud of .
Now that's a knife! Hopefully you won't get into a fight in bar Brian ;) Good review man (nice feather stick too)
Feral Woodcraft It's been awhile since I've been in a bar, thankfully.
You are a class act bryan i love your videos you remind me so much of my father it is unbelievable he sounded and looked just like you gave me a mini hunter as my first knife when i was 5 and i have had my heart in knives ever sense.
wow. Thanks
My grandpa made knifes out of big files with that pattern , years ago
your not rambling, talking about movies like the long riders is why i tune into your channel, I went and watched it later, and had a a good time. Keep up the good work.
:)
If you dig that one, check out the buck 124, my personal favorite blade, that pair with a 14 dollar sears craftsman hatchet, is my "made in america" combo. LOL.
keep rambling on
Guy Montag Thanks Guy. I'll have to check out the Buck.
Can you put it in the disherwasher after you cut up the turkey with it on Christmas after you get it ?
I just got this knife, the Uncle Henry golden spike, and the Old Timer sharp finger. Pretty decent.
Cool
Thanks for helping me decide if I want a knife from this company also they do sell one with a leather pouch so cool
Great review. Bought one from Dicks sporting goods today. They were out so I had to order it. Cant wait till I get it. Thanks again.
+Kerry Williams It's a cool knife.
I bought one and iam impressed:) NOW that's a knife Mate:):) you know the sheath that came with my gerber was just like that back in 1987. I thought it needed a better sheath then:) This is a real bargain:) for sure!
I think so too.

God of Thunder qa
Just purchased one your right its awesome thanks for the review
Cool
Nice review! But I kinda wish it had a leather sheath just for aesthetic and traditional purposes ya know but the nylon is pretty decent so really I have no complaints.
Schroeder_2000 I think so too.
Same here. I've got a drawer full of bowies ranging from 30 dollars to 100 and none get used like they should. Shame you and me ain't neighbors we'd make some long range testin videos
+357bullfrog I gave a buck of knives away to my Boy Scouts.
Do you know how the handle is fastened? Those aren't rivet heads and there seems to be a screw underneath... on both sides.
???
David Trabue I think it has chicago screws under little brass caps
So I'm thinking a video on proper balance testing how to skills is in order.
Also a Scout project on leather sheath making would be a good one
Good video . Thanks.
sort of already have both on the channel. Probably not the best but they are there if you search
I just got one at SMKW and also the Old Timer Bowie . 43.00 dollars, yep life is good. THANKS for vidios.
+paul palmer thanks for watching
Well a Full Tang knife really Cuts good you did a great presentation on this knife I'm definitely going to buy one in Amazon thank you so much for sharing this video I subscribe to your Channel
Very good review! I need one of these in my life!
Heck yeah.
I own this knife. Bought it at a garage sale. Only thing I don’t like is the sheath. I might get a leather one made.
Uncle henry or old timer which one should I choose
whichever on you like, They are made by the same company at the same factory
You convinced me to buy this one
hey Brian, cool knife:) I have the 1987 Gerber USA made Excalibur bowie knife. brand new still in box. I bought it because it was such a large bowie knife and never used it. It has a 3/8" thick blade on spine.
oops I meant 1/4" and the blade on it is 9 1/2"..
Very nice. I like big blades. Was wondering how the edge retention is? Thank you in advance. God bless and stay safe
I'll keep you posted.
can you do a video on a mossy oak bowie knife
We'll see
thanks
Hi there. I ordered one. I'm seeing a few people on the reviews at Amazon and on RUclips having their blade break from use. I watched you throw this stick it into a big tree. I'm wondering how yours held up over time with use? thanks
+UnSelfRighteous .Monk no problems.
Wow- love that knife! Just ordered one up
Thanks
Thanks. I appreciate it.
you should do the western outlaw timber rattler bowie.its around 30$ and darn good for the money!!
+Jacob Mitchell Maybe, I have so many knives already I am trying t focus on more variety. I'll add that to the "one day" list.
+Survival On Purpose you really should
Got it just now. This thing is everything you said it is.
+Kerry Williams Isn't is just cool?
+Survival On Purpose I jut got one as a Christmas present. One of the best gifts ever!
Thanks for the video Bryan! The challenge with feathers using a hollow grind isn't yours alone. I think the grind makes it bite into the wood, which makes it harder to push the blade down the piece of wood at an even thickness.
Shoto Kido I'm sure my technique doesn't help.
Survival On Purpose I wouldn't know about that, but there's a reason I prefer a Scandi grind above all else for feathers.
Hi! how about the edge retention on that knife?
Where is this knife made
Thx, good review. I already have the old version of that knife the 1870T, and I love it, looks like I will have to add the new version. I made a good leather sheath, a combo dangler/scout. That knife really screams for a good leather sheath. That nylon sheath is junk.
Oh, it works. It just doesn't fit the knife.
This knife came in pretty useful on christmas day for scoring the skin on some duck breasts we had alongside acting as an impromptu billhook cutting up wood. Bought it when I was in West yellowstone on holdiay from the Uk.
Cool. They let you bring that through customs into the UK? Wow. That is good to hear
Great Video! I like the shrade Saturday's and can you review the bear grylls paracord knife?
Yaaay! Balance test!! :-)
I guess this is a bad not-throwing knife, but looks cool alright.
Seems fairly useful also. Good review as usual.
It is very well balanced.
Survival On Purpose Yes, I saw that when you not-threw it.
I just think the design makes it a bad not-throwing knife.
As you said, when you didn´t throw it, you risk damaging the tip. :-)
I´m having trouble just writing this. How you could do this on camera is beyond me. :-)
You just have to be careful what you don't say.
Survival On Purpose Ha! :-)
True, true.
Keep the videos coming. You rock!
great vids could you do a review of the old timer deer slayer the new one thanks
This one? ruclips.net/video/ygfywAwRAAk/видео.html
really enjoy ur knife videos im a knife geek thanks
+James Webster Thanks James
Beautiful, good video and a nice throw
Bugin One Throw? What throw? you should never throw a knife ;-)
You are correct friend :-)
Nice review Bryan!
Copenhagen Man Thanks!
sweet knife, looks beautiful, full tang makes it tough
I agree. I kind of wish it had real stag or wood handles but that is easily changed v
I totally agree about the sheath. A BOWIE knife isn't complete without a real leather sheath. Nice... I'd pay an additional 20 to 30 bucks for that since the knife is listed under $35.
Old Pup I know. A lot of us would.
Why do you not do reviews on Ontario or Kabar?? For the price of some of these brand name cheapies you could get a decent 1095 high carbon knife that will last a lifetime.
Like the old school knife.
Thanks Louis.
When you stack firewood with the Bark on then it rots the wood, moisture gets in and the bark stops it leaving and the wood goes punky
Indeed.
No I have not tried to bend or break it ;-)
Is the knife heavy does it feel like s cheap made knife. Can u send me personal closeups if i give nmbr?or short vid
Great video Bryan!
Abrahm
BSA Bushcraft Thanks Abrahm. Great job so far on your base camp by the way.
Thank you sir!
Abrahm
Good review, very cool blade
Thanks Eric.
So how inducstudable is that knife I need a real big reliable
I personally have pounded on it through logs with lump hammer and cracked rocks and flint knapped with the spine it should hold up.
where do u buy one
+Cheryl Newman survivalonpurpose.com/Uncle-Henry-Bowie
You used the ultimate BG survival knife last year... Did it hold up?
Thomas Heslip So far , so good. I still use it. I'll do a follow up later this year, probably after summer camp.
Very nice
out of all the bowies you trested. what one is your favorite
+Outdoor Dad favorites are hard for me but I really like the Leroy
Survival On Purpose good blade i have the uncle henry 181 and love it. i dont really go out and use it for. chopping trees but carry has last resort of defense while hunting. love your videos keep it up.
Good video! I got the same exact knife but haven't got to use it much. How's yours holding up so far?
+357bullfrog Honestly, I haven't use it much. So many knives and so little time
I'd have to get a file to the finger guard. I think it's way too square. Make it nice & comfortable.
I'm looking for a high quality work Bowie knife you know any
+Nate Rambo stay tuned. I have a new one on the way
+Survival On Purpose I will thank you
i actually got one of these at bi-mart and im going to be making a leather sheath for it
Cool
How long has it lasted you so far, and is it’s worth 46 $ on amazon
I have not really used it much. If you really want a good big knife try this one: ruclips.net/video/QT4SWAd9_RQ/видео.html
Liked because of the Long Riders reference
;-)
cool knife:) glad I bought one:)
as always good job.
Tulsa Rob Gee Thanks!
Great review and keep on rambling!!!!!! >;)
Thanks Charles.
When a stainless steel knife blade extends over about 7 inches, it starts to get brittle. I understand heat treats and all, but from Uncle Henry, I wouldn't be expecting much.

that would be 'unsafe'.... (thanks....)
Nice knife.
I agree.
Good video
Thanks
Hey Brain. I like the knife a lot. I don't have any pine trees around here, so can you please send me a piece of fat wood to make a handle for my fire steel 🔥???. Great videos.
You'd have to use a cow to make a sheath for that thing! Lol Beautiful!
Johnathan Hancock I actually have a leather sheath being made for it by a very nice viewer. Stay tuned for that one, he does great work.
Cool!
Yes he was supposed to fighting sam star over . belle star . I was raised less than 2 miles from one of the James gang and belle stars hide outs . Big man in town , bought the heart estate and bulldozed the big 2 story hotel sized house down . Floyd heart wrote a small book about his youth there
That bowie must be an shelter maker Brian. You dont need to batoon the branches withy that one:)
