20:21 Their relationship was always planned, in the one piece oneshot (before 1999) Luffy already had an Grandfather with the same design as Garp. That's why Garp had the dog hat, to hide his design so nobody could recognize him until the reveal.
That's also why after they reveal their relationship in the anime Garp stops using the Dog hat.
Luffy has a tendency to.....not ever talk about the people he knows lol. The NO REACTION to his grandpa's name is so in-character
It might also have to do with the animators not knowing about Garp at that point. They're animating cover stories, and the part with the newspaper I don't remember happening in the manga so it was added just to include the main cast in the episode for a bit.
@@SuperZura91 Garp has been Luffy’s grandpa in previous manga before One Piece, same character and everything. They could have taken a guess if Oda didnt say anything 🤔
@@BadKarma444 The name wasn't revealed in the previous manga. In that he has the same design but is only called grandpa. That's why Oda made him wear the dog hat to hide it. Toei had no clues to guess it on.
Has anyone told you about the "cover stories" in the manga. Sometimes a chapter in the manga will start with a one panel update on side characters. The cover stories are part of what makes One Piece great. Because the world and all the characters we've met are still moving and living their lives.
Anyway, this episode is actually adapting some of the cover stories about Koby and Helmeppo.
BUT sadly later on the anime stops adapting cover stories.
They still adapt some. It's just rare.
which is a bummer since cover stories are so interesting 😂
Imagine if they adapted Enel's adventure.
I never understand their decision to stop animating cover stories, it's such a wasted potential since they always do fillers to let the manga go forward, so cover stories are the perfect way to do episodes between arcs instead of fillers with characters that won't appear ever again.

The bamboo that fills up with water and empties with a “clunk” in a Japanese garden is called a shishiodoshi “beast scarer”
The sound keeps away predatory wild life. The name would imply it could scare away lions, but it’s probably meant to keep raccoons and foxes away from the koi pond.

Garp was always planned to be his grandfather. Oda before making One Piece did a one shot, which was a sort of draft version of One Piece which had Garp still as his grandfather.
So yeah Garp was always planned out. Oda just doesn’t reveal their relationship until much later for a…better occasion. The scene of Luffy hearing Garp’s name is a filler scene which never happens in the manga. So that was basically Toei Animations doing their own thing not knowing what Oda was planning which is why Luffy doesn’t react
Oda knew Garp is Luffy’s grandfather at this point. There’s a couple “pilot” versions of One Piece Oda wrote before starting the series and in one of them Luffy’s grandfather serves as basically the Shanks figure inspiring him to go out to sea. That character has the same design as Garp, so Oda put the dog mask on him to hide his identity
Regarding Luffy's reaction to hearing Garp's name, this interaction is anime-exclusive as far as I know and since the actual reveal comes much later, the anime director likely didn't know or didn't want to give a hint that is not in the manga

Most probably (I think) Luffy has a habit of ignoring what he isn't interested in... or avoiding. For someone who says what's on their mind, Luffy really really really doesn't tell much about himself besides wanting to be King of the Pirates.
Hearing Coby announce wanting to be a naval officer like that is sort of funny because a navy officer is a vague term. It basically means a high rank. Since he is just a chore boy at the moment, he is starting off with short term goals. Luffy is aiming for the skies with king of the pirates but Coby is timid and he does not have much optimism but he is trying his best.
At the end of the live action series, when Garp says Coby and Helmeppo's punishment is him training them, now you see what he means lol
We are not meant to know what was on the newspaper yet. You will learn after Little Garden
its really nice to see and dive into Koby and Helmeppo's journey, makes the world feels like it moves forward even without the straw hats

on 20:00 Luffy has that "oh shit" Frozen smile that couldnt have come from just hearing Coby's news. So as for the question "is that something that's decided later on", likely it's not. In the live action he also just brushed it aside when asked by Zoro.

Luffy had no reaction because that line is anime only and the anime people didn't know he was luffy's granda, oda did clarify as the message prior to mine says he diced to hide his face so people wouldn't make the relationship with the one shot
Yes, you understood that well. Navy HQ is in the Grand Line and this is also one of the reasons why Nami's village didn't receive that much of a help from the Navy in defending them from Arlong's fishmen pirates or wiping them out. They are just too busy with bigger issues going on in the Grand Line
Axe-Hand Morgan was indeed hypnotized by Jango into thinking he caught Captain Kuro of a Thousand Plans of the Black Cat pirates.
Along with the Black Cat Pirate Yainu who was hypnotized into thinking he was Captain Kuro.
the koby/helmeppo training stuff makes me wonder if the live action will make note of this or not in season 2 or 3

Coby did not follow Morgan's boat, Helmeppo came back in the manga, so yeah, unrealistic for Coby to catch upto the boat.

Garp was always planned to be Luffy’s grandfather. In one of the Romance Dawn oneshots he was a pirate (I think?) and wore the straw hat before giving it to Luffy.

Got a couple hundred episodes before the official reveal of Garp being Luffy's grandpa. As others have noted, Luffy hearing his grandfather's name is a Toei thing. They do that sometimes, embellish without really knowing the whole story so they accidentally contradict some future revelation.
Luffy isn't interested in anyone's past including his own. He lives in the present and that sometimes makes him look less intelligent than he actually is.
This is the last fully animated cover story, unfortunately. There are things that happen in the future that no one knows about who watch the anime because it was never brought up in the anime but it was a cover story. I'm hoping the Wit recreation includes cover stories.
Occasionally these things do get referenced but not always. Sometimes you're just kind of left. Wondering how something happened when the answer was given in the cover story.
For instance, there's a cover story about the post-Alabasta antics of some the former Baroque Works agents.
The cover stories are available online. A couple of redditors have compiled them.
If you want, we could tell you how far up is safe to read. They usually last for several chapters. Unfortunately, as with the anime, sometimes the chapter titles are spoilers, so it's not necessarily safe to read them all.
Not to mention there is a cover story that explains what happened to Jango and how he became part of the Marines unit and one showing how Hacchan escaped and met Camie
Those could have been perfect setups for future episodes especially Since Jango doesn't do much with Fullbody afterwards

Also about Garp being Luffy's grandfather, a lot of people speculated that because there was a one shot from the author himself "Oda" before start writing ONE PIECE, it's called "ROMANCE DAWN' and Luffy took his hat from his grandpa Garp in this oneshot

Oda drew lots of pages of the ship as supplement info, detailed with Men's room, Women's room (made for Kaya), Storeroom, Dining room, Kitchen, Washroom/Shower room...and then anime kept it as 1:1..obviously. Oda is a Nerd.

You’ll find out more about Luffy down the road. He’s not necessarily keeping secrets, he’s just not about people’s pasts, including his own. Just like he wasn’t there to listen to Nami’s back story, you’ll find he’s not always present for other characters history reveals as well.

Luffy has the tendency to not care about anything that's not in front of him or piques his interest. He probably didn't even register hearing Garp's name. Its very in character for him even if this was a mistake by the showrunners.
He also doesn't ever read the newspaper. If he did , a lot of the problems he faces along the course of the story would be dealt with more easier but then we won't have a show😂.
There are literal memes and fanfictions on how different the story would be if Luffy read the newspaper.
Appart of Garp parentage revelation these two episodes cover the "momentum" achieved in live action considering Koby and Helmeppo evolution. It's important to say here, and don't worry I will not spoil about, that this story is a part of the second manga cover stories arc. THe first one was the story of Little Buggy that also Toei Animation developed. But I ask your atention here cause the other "cover arc stories" the animation almost completely ignored with exception of some flashes here and there. The reason why according some sources is duo a burocratic authoral complication because the anime and the fillers developers have to work over several "ISBN" numbers at one single episode and this turns to complicate to divide the "all creation authoral parts" (it is not a "mathematical" problem - looks like authoral international rights did not forseen rights distribution at this kind of case - so they solved not keep doing this cover stories).

Omni are you watching this on netflix? Well if you are well in the 400's they messed up intro songs and then later after the 500's they skipped like 5 arcs to the current arc in the manga. So unfortunately you're gonna have to switch to some place else. You have a while to enjoy here so no rush.
