“Honestly I think to say that this movie plays to the lowest common denominator is an insult to math” is one of the greatest phrases I’ve heard a critic say
LMAO this review is something else, gives me old movie fights angry Dan vibes, but with the incredible articulation that review Dan has. Much appreciation for the content sir.
I´m just gonna watch this awesome review 8.6 times in a row and have so much more fun with it than with any Minions movie - LOVE your eloquence THANKS for your reviews, your passion your everything :)
Dan I respect your opinion, but I feel like you're forgetting the fact that 'Minions: The rise of Gru' is actually a masterpiece. It's okay, we all make mistakes
The movie was actually really good like you said and the one thing that makes the movie great is The reference’s to The first Despicable me Movie ever there were a lot so I can’t count It that much
"There's a formula to this movie and the formula is who cares." One of your lines of the year. Holy crap, Minions did come out all the way back in 2015! I would have guessed 2018 or 2019. You're doing your best Jay Sherman impression with this one. Never change.
This review was so entertaining 😂 I laughed so much. That final “NOOOO” got me 😝 Thank you for suffering through another Minion movie and bringing this review to us.
The appeal of Minions depends on whether the "little yellow bastards" trigger your Cute Radar. It's the same phenomenon that dictates whether you think chihuahuas are cute or crack addicts.
I laughed out loud with this review, It was brilliant, and shows what is happening to some part of the blockbuster cinema industry if they are not careful
So I saw this movie, in a fairly well-filled theater, young children were there, but also like kids in the mid-teens. When the credits started rolling, I experienced the loudest applause and cheering I have ever heard at non-"epic moment" scene. At a lot of it was the teenagers. I don't know if it was an ironic cheer but it was...weird
The “bit” of Minions is that they are stupid, childish, slapsticky and again - stupid :D I think people like them because their children like them. And children like them because the level of it is at their level. Farts, stupid languages and slapstick gags are something little kids like. And I think that’s it. Nothing more… because there is nothing more here to see :D
Would you believe there is a well respected British critic that actually thinks they are the standard of modern day efforts to do silent film slap stick?
Marketing is what has convinced us that kids are stupid and stupidity is what is most appealing to them. It's perfectly possible to raise kids that aren't brain-rotted.
It went over well for the kids in my theater, a few even clapped in the end. I didn't hear clapping at anything else I've seen this year so far, but I heard it at this. So i guess they got what they wanted.
As one of the Minions’ biggest lovers I personally think that their naivety is what endears us to them. Like their positively adorable goofiness makes us return to how we felt like back in our childhood. But I digress. I did grow up with these movies after all and have way too much nostalgia bias to them.
It's makes them interesting. Least what I think. Seeing these cute little creatures get into mischief and shine in there own way with various levels of success and personalities. it's the Looney Tunes essentially. Not nearly as good but that's how I see it. Those who like the minions want to see them just play and be themselves with little restrictions.
Personal insult to Jaws...movie representing Hell ...insult to mathematics... Wow, Dan, your pain is palpable. I sympathize though I can't completely join you behind the protective glass. I kind of like the silliness of the Minions; and I am kind of obliged to watch plenty of it with my six-year old nephew and five-year old niece. This movie will keep them occupied for a couple of months.
It doesn’t make much sense bc… The movie was set in the late 60s/early 70s. Vector looked about 5 in the picture of him in the bank of evil scene, and gru was around 12 in the movie. However, in the first ever “despicable me” movie, vector was 18 and gru was in his 40s/50s and was confirmed to be set in the present day. How that works, I have no idea. Please someone explain
I LOVE THE DESPICABLE ME FRANCHISE ever since the first one came out in 2010 I think rise of Gru was way better then the first minions from 2015 I do can’t wait for the 4th movie in the main series in 2024
I'm happy to just assume that this review is 10,000 times as entertaining as the movie and move on with never having seen any of the movies in this franchise. Thanks for taking this one for the team, Dan.
As a parent, there are certain movies I will not expose my kids to. "The Emoji Movie" is one, this is another. You need standards and you need to keep the money away from studios, who make these kind of movies. There is no soul, no story waiting to be told, only lazy writers, caught in a greedy machine.
I vert much feel you here. While I understand a reviewer like Mark Kermode giving these films the benefit of the doubt in trying to say they are the revival of the silent film style of comedy (Which I disagree with, I think Shaun The Sheep has had that feeling covered for awhile now.), I definitely just see it as annoying noises that overshadows the occasional background ideas that is far more entertaining. Won't even hope it under performs, because that is straight up impossible. but it is nice to see someone that isn't quite so generous to it.
So it’s the sequel to the prequel to the OG trilogy in the same veins as Attack of the Clones and it has a similar title to The Rise of Skywalker?!? *cuts to screaming like a little girl in sheer horror for the nightmare that is about to proceed*
The law of diminishing returns is odd. I guess if you are really interested in certain characters, repetitive films won't bother you. But I still think the first Despicable Me is amazingly hilarious, but none of the others I care for. I definitely won't be seeing this one
Another reviewer felt they had a silent film era feel to them like 3 Stooges. I am an adult there is something I find funny about them. Are they worth a whole film? NO. But do I like them in small doses? yeah.
I work at my local movie theater, and witnessed crowds (and yes, that's plural) of grown adults going to see this movie tonight dressed in formal attire like they were dressed for church or something... these are strange times we live in.
I took my kid to see it and he liked it, but god damn is this movie a massive step down from Despicable Me and even the first Minions movie. It’s pretty unfunny and uninspired. This review is the best thing about it.
At work waiting to leave early for the holiday weekend. Love to have Dan to help pass the time! Thank you for all your insightful and entertaining reviews!
I only ever saw the first Despicable Me, have zero interest whatsoever. But goddamn, Dan's salt at being subjected to it is pure gold. "The answer is hell" literally made me spray out my morning coffee. Cheers for that Dan. I have a 4-year-old. Been trying to keep him away from it. Wish me luck guys.
Same. I hated those annoying af yellow things and simply refuse to watch anything they're in. Watched this review (and others for sooo many things I'll never watch) just to support Dan. Best of luck on your quest, man!
It's rare I feel the need to bookmark a review so I can come back and watch it again later. You made the cut. I think I'll try and revisit this one every Christmas.
I saw a lot of families at my local theater with their older sisters that I was trying to hit on but I guess not cuz it was inappropriate to do so maybe LOL
Hey Dan did you hear that there is an official poster for Everything Everywhere All At Once but with the Minions. Talk about combining an angel and the devil.
The language they use is not entirely gibberish. It contains pieces of lots of different languages which makes their speech pretty fun if you speak several languages 😊 (also I look forward to this movie, love the minions)
I've never seen any of the Minions movies, but I get the impression from this review that they're like the animation equivalent of those "Epic Movie/Date Movie" cash grabs.
Dan, if you and Mara ever decide to have kids, you'll change your opinion on Minions, Space Jam and the sorts... Your review would be, like, "I love the Minions movie! The kids shut up for two hours and I managed to catch up on my Fantasy Football league whilst eating popcorn. We'll be back next weekend"
Dan, I am right there with you on the feelings toward the Minions movies. I apologize that you had to sit through this one to bring us your review, but I must say I love all your creative sick burns!

Hey Dan - prior to Charts this week I’d look into the tik tok memes going around with the new minions movie. A bunch of teens are making a joke out of showing up in large groups either dressed really fancy / dressed as the minions / or going and making a party out of it. Seems like it’s becoming a big enough tik tok trend that it could impact the box office in a way very opposite to the morbius meme impact.
Dan... I hated the minions since the first Despicable Me movie. I have since refused to watch anything they're in/on/part of. Dan's dream movie is a multiverse adventure starring Cocomelon and the Minions.

@CannonKnight, And don’t forget about Baby Shark!
Thank you for reviewing this absolute masterpiece of cinema. Almost as good as Morbius
Jeez, stop with that shit
Nothing is as good as Morbius tbf

Muuuuuuuch better than morbius
If I have to choose one of the two movies to watch, it would be Morbius.
