If you have a unit with issues, this is your guy !! The unit in this video is mine, and it performs like new. Most places near me wouldn't touch it. Not only does he know what he's doing, but the charges are very fair. 5 stars for NorCal715 !!!!!
Never seen a mode switch so clean! Your should make a special tool to help hold up the VCR chassis while you clean the switch; then you can use both hands! 🤣 Thanks for the excellent video and for responding to my request about my Mitsubishi VCR.
Great repair videos Steve tks for posting you are a genius, plz continue on RUclips. However, I brought a Magnavox VCR/DVD player and recorder but, only the DVD plays not the vcr...maybe you can teach me what to do....I live so far away. Guyana.
Great video. Thank you for the credit post. The unit I was thinking about sending you now functions, thanks to you. I knew what to look for, finding and identifying blown caps. I found it and I fixed it with a quality capacitor. Now the Bluetooth speaker sits proudly on my kitchen counter.
Another competent fix on the books! I've never seen you do what I'm about to ask you to do... As a "side job", sometime in the near future would you get a example collections of plastic scrap parts that could be used for showing what types of plastics ARE and AREN'T adversely affected by the use of your magic joy juice? :) You mention it so often, rightly so. How about some good examples that we would most likely be dealing with, with explainations. That may alley "too much" concern fearful folks have, Thanks!
I have one with the similar problems and I've done all the services that you showed us and I'm still having issues. I don't know much about the caps. That's a little bit above my paygrade. I was wondering if it can be sent into you and have you fix it.
Hello Norcal, what kind of dielectric grease do you use for the contacts of the mode select switch. It is relatively fluid, not so sticky as Silicon grease or vaseline. I want to lubricate the positioning sensor in a Kenwood KX-790R Cassette deck, it is the same mechanic as the magnavox mode select switch - some wiper and cicular contact plate. Not sure whether it makes sense to buy it from US, maybe I can find a reseller in Europe. Thanks for an answer and all the best for you.
It is Dow Corning 111 Valve lubricant and sealant. www.amazon.com/Dow-Corning-Ring-Silicone-Lubricant/dp/B00CTUJNU2/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2F3IW90CV4U3Q&keywords=dow+corning+111&qid=1644094249&sprefix=dow+%2Caps%2C128&sr=8-1
I have the exact unit,zv427mg9 and it is doing the same thing. I insert the tape, it runs for 8 seconds or so then shuts down. What would the repair charge be if I sent it to you? And great video by the way.
Hi, I have a RCA DRC8335 DVD Recorder/ Player 6 Head HiFi VCR Combo unit that has tracking issues on the vcr side, also video out on RCA doesn'twork. However, component output works. Hoping I can send it to you for repair. Please reply. Thanks!
My VCR is doing this exact same thing. I took it appart, cleaned the contacts of the mode switch, cleaned the sensors, visually inspected the capacitors on the power supply (which seemed fine). It continues to only play a tape for 5 seconds and then powers off. Tension and everything looks good, is there something else that would cause this? (Its the same model vcr shown in this video).
See if the loading motor stops running after the tape loads. If it does not then it may have a slipping belt. Acetone is your friend with belts and pulleys.
@@norcal715 Steve, I found some for sale on eBay, manufactured by Midwest Devices LLC. They have a website with information, and a dealer list. Just a FYI. Gary
@@norcal715 yeah I opened it and the left black tab that lowers the tape down won't go all the way down so the right side of the tape goes down but not the left, if I guide it with my fingers thru the metal a little bit it goes down and works fine.

One of the most informative repair videos I have ever seen.

I just got a screen capture device to record off HDMI, component or composite to USB
Another one excellent video! Thank you!

Steve do you still repair these units?
I usually just take the door off, and get rid of it
Mine is doing the same thing , do you still repair these from home ?

Is a stainless steel brush necessary, or will a brass one work as well to clean the mode switch?
Brass should work just fine also.
My first view
How can I purchase an ESR meter like the one you have? I have other ones but I like yours better.
As of this time I cant find ANY analog ESR meters available. If I find one available I will post a link. Do you have a time machine?

Yes that's a handy meter I wish I had bought me. I think MCM sold them but now I can't find them.

Mine wont take the tape and it makes a grinding noise and spits the tape out immediately =/
Mechanical issue. Try to pinpoint what is grinding, making noise.

The one I have takes the video tapes but stops halfway into the VHS slot.
