Great overview of the scene! I lived there for 7 years and played in several bands in different cities (Kurgan, Samara, and Saint Petersburg), and it is such a challenge to be in a band there, compared to back in the US. Having said that, the Russian metalheads are super serious about their music and are very dedicated to mastering their instruments. Thanks for shining some light on this often ignored genre...
Aria is one of my favorite bands ever ! Like every band, they had some up and downs in their carrier, but for me they had more ups than downs. During their carrier they improved their sound a lot, exploring different types of metal styles, such as speed metal, heavy metal , power metal and symphonic metal elements in their music . They previous vocalists ( Valery Kipelov and Arthur Berkut ) are great, and the current one is also very good ( Mikhail ), but i would say that Kipelov had a very special role in Aria's history, this guy have such a strong and powerful voice ( reminds a bit of Bruce Dickinson ) and he still sings with Aria in some special concerts. I've never been to an Aria concert, but i have seen a few live concerts on youtube and they sound amazing ! Aria is definitely a band that you should add in your setlist.
Kipelov has his own band called ... "Kipelov" xD. I advise their first album, "Rivers of Time" (Reki Vremen) and the song "I am Free" (Ya svoboden). I was at his 60th birthday jubilee concert. Still hot and huge!

This is a Russian death metal band but whenever I think of Russia and metal, Katalepsy is at the top of my list. Their latest album Gravenous Hour is a killer and still one of my favorite albums.
The dark, foresty pagan/folk-ish metal scene in Russia is fantastic, as is their folk in general. I also love their pure death scene, though my favorite Russian-language death band is actually from Belarus (Некросепсис/Necrosepsis). They also have loads and loads of good modern djent-y bands, with their appropriate virtuoso guitar players. I never liked their more traditional heavy metal stuff though, as most if it started back in the late 70's and 80's (yep, that was during the Soviet era and those bands were literally underground, hiding away from state censors at the time) with total NWOBHM fanboys eventually becoming more or less copies of Judas Priest, Maiden etc, some with nearly entire songs seemingly just stolen. So musically, they're not awfully interesting, though the whole underground aspect obviously is. Anyway, yeah. I'd like to mention the Siberian progressive rock/metal band "Extrovert" by the way, they're virtuosos the whole bunch (as is customary for that genre), but have a distinct vibe to them that is like a mix of Dream Theater and Pagan's Mind or something, with a Russian touch. They have released at least two records entirely in English too, but the pronunciation is not that great at all times, so even with their vocalists excellent abilities it's still better in Russian overall.
High five, man! Took from my tongue! Those molded NWOBH-copycats are sooo farting pity... But russian folk/pagan/traditional scene outshines all the third-rated nonames and is truly original and unique. And do not forget DVAR - they are one of a kind musical trip!

Probably my favourite band from Russia at the moment is Pseudogod. Their album Deathwomb Catechesis is amazing and if you like black death and you arent familiar with this band you should definetly check it out.

Third, the creator of GOVNILIUM has been more than present online, in the Russian part of the internet, and BOY he is a topic for an entirely different video! One which I will make sooner than later. Favorite Russian bands: Kauan (earlier material is atmospheric doom, later is achingly beautiful post-rock), Grey Heaven Fall (dissonant blackened thrash), and End Zone (progressive thrash, defunct unfortunately). Now, to get really deep...Chinese metal. Go check out 黑麒 (Black Kirin).
This is awesome!!! There are so many killer bands out there!!! As a huge power metal fan, the first song I heard was "Runaway From Dark" by Archontes (I was hooked on "that freight train drumming". Epidemia, TRUST X, Vikont, Sergei Mavrin (ex-Aria), Kipelov (ex-Aria), AELLA, Arktida, Emerald Mind, Charizma, and Hammerforce are all excellent power metal bands. Mechanical Poet is, well, Mechanical Poet. Sunless Rise is an amazing technical melodic death metal band with killer musicianship!!! Extrovert is a mind blowing prog metal band which reminds me of earlier Dream Theater, while retaining their own unique sound!!! If you like Kevin Moore-era DT definitely check out the last album. It took me awhile to get used to the Russian vocalist style, but they have some really amazing vocalists. Valery Kipelov has an incredible range and is now probably in my top ten vocalists list.
Hey, Sound of the Beast! That's still my favorite book on heavy metal history. Louder Than Hell is another good one, as it's an oral history, but Ian Christe really knows his stuff and has an imminently readable style. Also, this was was an episode I really wanted to see, because Russia has a neat scene going on. The entire former Eastern Bloc does, for that matter. Good power metal and black metal coming out of those countries. I'm also waiting to see what you guys do with the Japanese scene. It's sooooo huge, but I'm really curious to see you guys focus on the anti-idol scene specifically. There's some crazy shit coming out of that. Not just Babymetal, but Kamen Joshi, Bish, Bellring Girls Heart, and Band Maid too!
The only russian band I'd known before this episode was skald. And yes, they are awesome! Love the vocals on the record. Don't know the demo though. More unknown gems! More Sarah! Awesome!
cool group in Russia was Metal Corrosion (sadism),Master (speak of the devil ),Hellraiser ,Black obelisk, the Iron flood,Varfolomeevskaya night and DIVAS
Love Russian and Ukrainian bands . My favorites lately are " Shokran " and " Jinjer " , I remember hearing " Aria " for the first time in 1991 and have been a fan since. Would like to see some more metal featured from around the world . South America , Australia , and Japan have to be on the list of future episodes.
Great compilation - but one thing: you should have (honorable) mentioned the song The Avenger from Kruiz. This song is very near in it´s themes and feel to viking metal and was imho had a much better atmospheric feel than contemporary Manowar. As I heard this song in 88 it blew me away.
My Autumn, Shokran and Slaughter to Prevail are some of my favorite bands from Russia. Definitely check them put if yall haven't already! Although I wouldn't be surprised if yall already have..haha
Absolutely nothing similar. However the entrance of Metallica's Master of Puppets seems to be pasted from Aria AND Doom's soundtrack is definetly pasted from there (btw "Это Рок" is "This is Doom" in English). Just better watch this video ruclips.net/video/kJSH5pEYJio/видео.html
Hey you guys should make the word "formed" and other reference points on the timeline different colors. the word is the same color as the dates on the timeline and sometimes it's hard to identify where it popped up if you're stoned or colorblind.
There's a great modern thrash metal band Импакт, from Nabereznye Chelny. They are very thrashy. Also, Железный Поток is a great thrash metal band from the 80s
You made a very critical error in your video. The album cover that you used for Arias debut is actually the album cover of the cover album by the all female metal group who did a cover of Arias debut that is not the original actual cover for res album. How do I know? I've been a fan of Aria since 2004 here in America as an American and I've actually kind of been to them religiously almost and have more from them than any other American including a one of a kind pullover hoodie that is a bootleg that you will probably never be able to find again so if anyone knows their debut and the fact that I also got the logo from the debut tattooed on my arm I think it would be me so I can guarantee without a shadow of a doubt that that cover is completely wrong it's closed but it's not the actual cover for Aria it's for the album done by the female metal band that was covering the entire album
That riff in the Kruiz song In Flames could only be written in the 80’s. Just like the Eric Clapton/Ginger Baker/Steve Winwood super group Blind Faith could have ONLY exsisted in the 60’s.
Haha that's alright but man I really appreciate the effort and what you guys are doing especially with this series which I think is a stroke of genius. I have heard the scald album before and liked it a lot. I was aware of the band aria as well since they are so legendary. I should check out the albums that you suggested since they sound really exciting. Since being more of a thrash head I was drawn towards the Russian scene especially for the thrash bands that came out of there like aspid and shah. Russian thrash metal has a very unique style since it's usually highly technical with aggressive raspy vocals. The music is heavily Megadeth influenced with like extremely top-notch guitar work. I am not sure if many have noticed but they also have a lot of influences and similarities to aggressive heavy/speed metal bands like turbo from Poland. When I heard Russian thrash it did remind me of Satan's cavalry by turbo or kawaleria sztana
Of the metal bands I listen to... Only Аряa was featured in the video... The other bands I listen to are Эпидемя, Катарсис and Гран Куражь... Oooh and Archontes
If i had to name my favorite russian metal band, that has to be Sympuls-E (Melodeath). The way they use synths helps to achieve a very futuristic theme/sense that i love. Plus, the singer is a girl
The harshness of the Russian language has always been the draw for the more raw heavy metal bands from the country, for me. Bands like Aria, Kruiz, Aspid, and Korrozia Metalla are jems of the 80's. I find though that a lot of great Russian metal started late ('88-'93) and that stuff gets overlooked like crazy.
@@heavynov To my ears, German, Portuguese and Russian and a few other languages have a certain harshness to their pronunciation. I'm a native English-speaker though, so I might just have a certain perspective on them.
Not many people know that Russia is not soviet union any more. Let alone that they have music. And that music isnt folksongs and army choir, but pop and rock. So - no wonder, really
My favorite is Arkona. Also this band is actually Finnish but they do speak Russian for this band, it's more of a gimmick really. So if you want something bit colder listen to Doom metal band KYPCK.(Kursk). When I think of Russian metal I mostly expect something as cold as Ivan Drago's heart. So while their not Russain Finland is cold enough.tehe
Sarah, as a doom metal fan I think you would enjoy Evoke Thy Lords evokethylords.bandcamp.com/ It's a very original stoner doom metal band from my hometown of Novosibirsk (Western Siberia). They started as an early Amorphis type death doom metal band but progressed over the years into more stoner oriented sound with an interesting choice of instruments. They use deep growling vocals alongside flute. You should definitely check them out, I think.
Oooookei, even though it was an interesting journey into Russian metal, including fining out about such band as Govnarium, and I could agree that most or Russian metal scene is or was kinda Manowar-ish, but if you mention Aria, you should mention also Korozia Metala. Times have passed, but I do not recall any other Russian metal band what was covered by any western metal bands (it is Koldbrann, but couldn't find studio version in youtube, just some live performances, and search for, of course, song called "Russian Vodka"), not counting tributes by other metal and non-metal Russian bands. Also another influential metal sub-genre in Russia, just like in any other Eastern on Northern European country is folk-metal, and of course Arkona (I don't even know how many Arconas there are in Eastern Europe). But all and all Russian metal was always on the melodic side, nowadays I'm all for gender equality, and I would use such comparison, but back then I used to call Russian metal a girlish. But there are some mentionable exceptions.

@@СемёнСемёнов-ы1ь Is it a trolling of Leos' megalomania of himself being a extreme vocals saviour?
PS. I'm from Belarus, so I know about him.
Try Hieronymus Bosch, it will blow your mind.
I've recently been on concert of 3 local bands, and, of 3, i can recommend you 1 - Eoront. It's traditional black metal. This guys are awesome!
GOVNILIUM POWER
Exquisite taste (of shit)!
Check out Kartikeya - The Golden Blades for some truly kickass Russian metal :D
In Russia we have opinion that Aria is Iron maiden cover band
That Kruiz "In Flames" is straight up banger
I'm a simple man. I hear Scald, I click, I subscribe. This woman knows what she's talking about.
'Klinika' is a very good one too
Favorite Russian bands: Kauan (earlier material is atmospheric doom, later is achingly beautiful post-rock), Grey Heaven Fall (dissonant blackened thrash), and End Zone (progressive thrash, defunct unfortunately). Now, to get really deep...Chinese metal. Go check out 黑麒 (Black Kirin).
You may get your wish!
More Sarah! Awesome!
THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR GIVING AN INSIGHT INTO RUSSIAN HEAVY METAL SCENE!
Scald - Will of the Gods is Great Power is a MASTERPIECE!!!! R.I.P Agyl.
cool group in Russia was Metal Corrosion (sadism),Master (speak of the devil ),Hellraiser ,Black obelisk, the Iron flood,Varfolomeevskaya night and DIVAS
The most extreme and insane death metal act you can ever listen to is the album "Brutal Constructor" by the Russian band Merlin.
Great compilation - but one thing: you should have (honorable) mentioned the song The Avenger from Kruiz. This song is very near in it´s themes and feel to viking metal and was imho had a much better atmospheric feel than contemporary Manowar.
As I heard this song in 88 it blew me away.
When our band plays out, usually we play with a lot of bands that sound like this. And they're from America. :)
My Autumn, Shokran and Slaughter to Prevail are some of my favorite bands from Russia. Definitely check them put if yall haven't already! Although I wouldn't be surprised if yall already have..haha
Russia has some interesting bands. "Black obelisk", "Orgia Pravednikov", "Kruger", "Невидь", "Kalevala", "Фактор страха", "Perimeter
", "Master", "Butterfly temple", "TT-34", "Elektropartizany", "Tequilajazzz", "Lumen" :)
Yeah, but that "Aria" song just "Rapid Fire" by Judas Priest hahaha
Aria is the biggest "copy paste' in Russia, they copied everything
Aria is practically iron maiden's cover band
You should make your own RUclips channel dedicated to the stuff you don’t get to cover on here
Excellent choice! "Will of the gods is great power" is one of the greatest albums ever.
My favourite Russian bands are: Arkona, Alkonost and Grai.
Thank you for video about Russian metal! My favorites are Manic Depression and God Syndrome.
That riff in the Kruiz song In Flames could only be written in the 80’s. Just like the Eric Clapton/Ginger Baker/Steve Winwood super group Blind Faith could have ONLY exsisted in the 60’s.
Awesome video as always but really strange that shah wasn't picked
Their album beware is fantastic
Thanx for doing this video)
Sivij Yar is the best russian band I've ever heard, no doubt! They/he is more towards black metal though
If i had to name my favorite russian metal band, that has to be Sympuls-E (Melodeath). The way they use synths helps to achieve a very futuristic theme/sense that i love. Plus, the singer is a girl
No Goresleeps, no Mental Home!? How it could be possible not to mention those??
У нее Русская коса. Даже в России мало кто об этом знает.
Wait, harshness? It's one of the softest sounding languages to me, actually.
@@heavynov To my ears, German, Portuguese and Russian and a few other languages have a certain harshness to their pronunciation. I'm a native English-speaker though, so I might just have a certain perspective on them.
Wow, thanks, BangerTV
Not many people know that Russia is not soviet union any more. Let alone that they have music. And that music isnt folksongs and army choir, but pop and rock. So - no wonder, really
My favorite is Arkona. Also this band is actually Finnish but they do speak Russian for this band, it's more of a gimmick really. So if you want something bit colder listen to Doom metal band KYPCK.(Kursk). When I think of Russian metal I mostly expect something as cold as Ivan Drago's heart. So while their not Russain Finland is cold enough.tehe
Sarah, as a doom metal fan I think you would enjoy Evoke Thy Lords evokethylords.bandcamp.com/
It's a very original stoner doom metal band from my hometown of Novosibirsk (Western Siberia). They started as an early Amorphis type death doom metal band but progressed over the years into more stoner oriented sound with an interesting choice of instruments. They use deep growling vocals alongside flute. You should definitely check them out, I think.
Black Coffee?
But there are some mentionable exceptions.
сдается мне мы посмотрели какое то гонево
И это утверждение верно ✅ лол))) Хрень собрали ...
