The Duluth Skywalk Elevator Project - A Complete Tour of the City

- This is a complete video tour of the Duluth, Minnesota Skywalk System and all of the elevators in it. There are some that I was unable to ride because they are not accessible to the general public. However, I was able to ride almost every single elevator connected to the Skywalks. This was my little summer project, and to the best of my knowledge, this is the longest elevator video, as well as the only complete city tour of elevators on RUclips at this point. I would like to note that this video is not continuous. That is, I didn't film this entire 4 hour video in one shot. This took many days to accomplish and it happened a little bit at a time. It is, however, continuous in the fact that I have edited it so that wherever I stopped filming, I started there again, so it is a continuous tour without any breaks in the trail. I should also point out that this only includes the main Downtown portion of the Skywalk system. There is a second, smaller system a few blocks to the northeast of the Technology Village, which is the easternmost point in the video. That connects the hospitals and other medical buildings together, and that is not shown here. There is a proposed skywalk expansion that would connect the two systems together, and if that does get built someday, then another, much longer video will have to be made!
By my count, there are 60 elevators shown in this video. I count banks of elevators as one elevator and usually only ride one of them to save time. Only 5 of the 60 elevators shown could not be ridden; 2 were freight elevators, 1 was permanently out of service, and the other 2 were not accessible to the public. There are many brands of elevators, including Dover, ThyssenKrupp, Schindler, Otis, and Westinghouse. Also some lesser known brands, such as Lagerquist, Johnson Elevator Company, and Minnesota Elevator Company (MEI). The only major brands I can think of that don't make an appearance are Montgomery or Kone (although there is a set of Montgomery escalators in the Holiday Center, which I do show). There are many old elevators and new ones as well. Some are completely original and some have been modernized. This is a city of many diverse elevators.
I start and end the tour at the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center (DECC), where we get a good view of the Aerial Lift Bridge. I won't go into the specifics of all the elevators and their buildings because that would be an excruciatingly long read. A map of the skywalk system can be found here: www.downtownduluth.com/parkplu..., in case anyone wants to follow along.
To anyone that watches this thing all the way through; You definitely deserve a gold star and I thank you very much and hope you enjoy it.
Thank you for watching :)
*NOTE: I made this video during the summer of 2011. It was originally uploaded to another RUclips channel, and I am now posting it here as this is my new elevator headquarters on RUclips. Some of the elevators in this video have been modernized, but most remain the same as of Spring 2014. There are many city projects in the works, so quite a few elevators in this video will be destroyed and replaced as new buildings replace old ones. Наука
WOW this looks like a GREAT video!! I am DEFINITELY gonna watch this!
Ys
Andrew I think you should go there
I was just back in Duluth the other day, and I walked through a good chunk of the Skywalk system. It is pretty fascinating how much of this is still the same, but a lot of this has also changed in 10 years.
Yep, that's for sure. It is on my bucketlist to do a modern remake of this video, but given how much of a time commitment something like that would be, it'll remain on the bucketlist for a while.
I love duluth

I love Duluth! I have watched this twice before and I am doing it again. Awesome video!
Thank you. Despite the fact that the quality of this now looks as if it was filmed with a potato, I'm rather proud of it because I got some continuous footage when most of the elevators in the old Duluth buildings were still original...in addition to the look of the skywalk system as a whole as well, since parts of that have changed from this time. As you may or may not be aware, almost all of the elevators in the bigger buildings have now been modernized in some form, so this preserves a good bit of history. I'd like to do another video like this sometime, but I think it's not the time yet. Perhaps a 10 year anniversary project in 2021? We'll see...
Northland Elevators it is truly sad. I have a feeling the Radisson is next.
Love you what is the Louvre
your skywalk looks very clean and bright. elevator variety is great too. looks like parts of the skywalk are open at different times. tweeting elevator sounds nice.
Sam Sitar Yeah, for the most part, it's a pretty nice skywalk system. Since I filmed this, quite a lot of work has been and is being done. In the next couple years, many parts will look completely different, with modernized elevators, and completely brand new ones as a new high rise complex is being built.
V b is going on with the kids today to see if she is available tomorrow morning at noon time and she is ready at noon and will call ☎️ and see how she’s going and what time we work to meet with you all weekend to get her hair trimmed
Thanks for taking the time to put this together and I definitely watched the entire video. :-)
***** Wow, thank you very much! I honestly don't expect very many people to watch this thing the whole way through, so to hear that you did really makes the whole project worthwhile. When I had it on my other channel, georgef551 said he watched the whole thing, so it's nice to know that people are enjoying it.

What is the second building with the glass dover impulse and the internal westinghouse that are close together
I also watched this from front to back; excellent work. It was great to see some old friends too. I've been laid up medically. I still feel like crap but I'm going on the road to do a job tomorrow. This helped me a bunch. I'll be back later in the week. Sorry I haven't gotten you in the hirise elevator @ The Harbours. We'll get that done. Great work here!!
Dana Danarosana Thanks for the comment. I'm glad you liked the video! I never thought at the time that there would be any significance with this little summer project, but it's amazing to see what has changed from the time I filmed this until now. With that new Maurices building and transit center coming, as well as some elevator mods that have already been completed, I think this video will be of historical interest to people down the road. Even I will have to come back to it from time to time just so I can remember how things used to be.
Great Video watched it from Beginning to End took two days but I loved it But do u think you can get a retake of the elevator at the 48:10 Mark I'd love that old dover

Nice to hear
The holiday inn is a pretty interesting place because they have main elevators and when you get to floor 8 the pool level there is a glass elevator that serves 8-10 which is neat and also where is the entrance to the holiday inn
The Holiday Inn's "main" entrance is probably considered to be the 3rd floor from the parking ramp, as that's where the main lobby is. Otherwise, you'd possibly consider the ground floor of the Holiday Center as a "main entrance".
Very nice ı made elevator.
What is the building that says
Please push east hall call button for East elevator or push west hall call button to call west elevator
Please do not push both hall call buttons at the same time
Who was the guy who came out of the thyssenkrup elevator who said did I say you can talk
looks like you filmed on weekends. where else does that green side door open?
Sam Sitar I mostly filmed in the late afternoons. That's usually the best time as most of the buildings are still open but most people have left from work for the day. But yeah, parts of the skywalk are open at different times. The main routes are open later, while areas that access some of the more private buildings close earlier. On the weekends, the tall buildings are usually closed so that's not really the best time to go exploring :)
Sam Sitar ...and which green side door are you referring to? Sorry, this is a long video and I forget where that is lol
What is the garage w the fast Dover impulse elevator that you rid twice in the video
Tech Village Ramp
TLDW, did you do the one in the Beal Building? Makes a lot of weird "maahvvvvvhhhh" noises as it goes down.
Yep!
what is the omnimax theater
I heard the whistle blow what was that for?
Likely a ship going through the canal
