Compare this to set 60130 from 2016. This one has 200+ more pieces and costs $14 *less* (adjusted for inflation as is basic & necessary for any semblance of a fair comparison).
The BURP next to the pipe can easily be removed for more access. Still doesn't make the washing machine area all that more useful but the designer did at least make it slightly better to get into.
I love all the play features of this set. It's really cool to see the creativity the designers put into this set in using all the extra space down below the main build.
Lego ain't cheap these days, but I can see that they're getting smarter with their designs. A noticeable improvement over the last couple of years, for sure.
Seems like getting two of those sets could allow for a really nice MOC. Decently large island and possibly enough pieces to enclose the rooms - 2 cells, entrance, 3 or 4 staff rooms (including tower)?
If I would go to prison and discover a hole in the cell, with a spider 2/3 the size of a human living in there... I would rather jump in the shark-infested waters, even if no boat would be waiting for me.
I like that you can make a full island out of 2 sets basicly, even with the default build being pretty much mirrored as shown as a starting point. For a City set , this has quite a bit of "cave" space, due to the BURPs, in this case a benefit.
I like the overall concept of the set, and its colour scheme. Including the front built up rocky areas, they seem more detailed than I'd expect, similar to the ideas lighthouse.
I know a few people don't really like BURPs and the like, but I have a lot of nostalgia for them and genuinely think they're good for both playsets and display sets if used correctly, like here.
A pleasant surprise to see the increase in value and having two underground escapes/play areas is a great concept and will always be popular. I hope to find this on sale eventually. Thanks for the great review ❤
I like what I see. But one thing that continues to bug me about LEGO jails/prisons is that they should give you the same number of beds as they do prisoner figures.
Love this set, but I'm gonna have to save this for waaaaaay later in the year. I like the amount of storytelling in this set and the play features are really good and well integrated. There's a lot to do for both the Police and Prisoners and I'm loving the orange jumpsuits a nice change from the stripes. The set just gives me major Shawshank vibes and i didn't get the previous version they did ages ago so this is certainly on my radar.
This looks like a really fun playset with all the different escape possibilities, one that my younger self would have a blast playing with. And for a good price for once too. Well done, LEGO!
Oooh, I love how its semi modular already, and can sit as a standalone playset. The depth of the build you've shown reminds me of the cool Legorado series poker-trap/escape set that I think you or someone reviewed in the past. Very cool set and great value. I agree on the helo but the new standalone one you reviewed recently looks great--and I'm happy to see more variation on the pilot helmet's clear visor for my own mocs and minifigs :D
While I prefer the aesthetic of 60130: Prison Island, it feels like this new set has lots more play value with the minecart tunnel. I wish there was a LEGO prison that could accommodate way more prisoners though, and possibly in a modular way (the closest I know of so far is the Space Police 3 prison pod system distributed over the sets, and that could be put in the set 5985: Space Police Central -- though it was really possible only thanks to the sci-fi setting)
Even when Lego makes sets worth buying I still have to justify the space the sets take up if I buy them. Thank you for covering so many Lego sets, it is very relaxing.
So many LEGO playsets include jails and jailbreak features, from Town/City, Western, and Pirates/Imperials. It must be a really popular play feature with kids. And hey, I enjoy it as well, heh. Looks like a good deal and I'm surprised to see sideways built stairs on a set like this.
I found there was a good balance between big parts and smaller microbuilds & decorative elements. Looks good and lot of fun thanks to the action features !
Love the play features on this. Hidden tunnels and trap doors are always fun. I don't know if anyone else noticed most of the crooks are in other sets? The woman with short black hair is driving the muscle car and woman with the tall hair is in the police truck set. I think the smirking guy is in the harbor hideout but I don't think mutton chops is in any sets.
Excellent review. I like these sort of sets, but I've no place to display and little place to store, so I'm "stuck" "only" buying my favorite genres (namely Space, Castle, Supers (Marvel), and Star Wars).
Pretty great set, I think accessibility for minifigures and options to close the set up should be improved The new prison uniforms are awesome, more accurate to real life
I really like the set. They didn't waste too many pieces on the vehicles. After all this isn't a vehicle set. The fun of the escapes and the general play features are great. The inclusion of the dog and the angled helipad give the set a big + in terms of fleshing out the display value. Another thing you didn't mention though is the rotor for the chopper. I think they adressed the issue of the new plastics. The old rotor piece with 4 blade options doesn't work well. But this "newer" piece with 2 blades works really well. I can imagine kids will love playing with the chopper, the 2 boats, the shark and the mining cart. Also the bucket of the cart can easily detach from the frame, so kids could " imagine" it floats. All in all this set is awesome. I got it at 77 euros. Which is very much a steal for what you get. Design wise the set is built smart. Using burps the way they should be. As a thing to attack stuff. The almost disappear. And including 1 burp with 12 variety smaller bricks gets so much more done and looks great. What you cannot achieve with 13 single bricks.
Really cool set. I especially like the underground featueres and would've loved this as a kid. I saw this -30% meaning 70€. Kind of want to get it because of that but I don't really buy city sets anymore.
Definitely good play features. Maybe a little controversial to make a Lego Alcatraz, but for DC and Marvel Super Hero fans this has to be a PERFECT spooky setting for Super Hero battles
Not for me, but that's a heck of kid's playset. Lots of neat details and design ideas and play features. (And no, it's not just your personal bias about the helicopter, Jang. It's just a weak, throwaway design in an otherwise really nice-looking set.)
If they did this to be officially perfectly closeable, it would be so much better AND they could have avoided the complaints about being only a facade of a prison...
The biggest weakness to me is that it only has the one cell. If the entire island is a prison, it should hold more people than the holding cell at the police station on the mainland.
I really like the washing room actually, i think i would have gottena kick out of that and some of the other mundane eloements of this set. Now though i just think it's a little strange that LEGO makes prison sets at all. The nebulousness of the criminals and the jailers and their escapes and the implication that the excaped prisoners he to fend of sharks to escape! It must be a pretty bad place for that to be worth it
During the whole review I was like "lego don't do guns... but a prison like that is fine ?"... I'm glad Jang has some reserves too. (Don't get me wrong, I'd have loved that as a kid. It's just... of very questionnable taste)
Despite the better value of this new one, I still prefer the old prison island just in the layout and overall look of the thing. This new one isn't bad but it just feels a little flat and has a lack of cells.
Compare this to set 60130 from 2016. This one has 200+ more pieces and costs $14 *less* (adjusted for inflation as is basic & necessary for any semblance of a fair comparison).
How on Earth is that possible?!? That's amazing!!
I have the previous prison island. I'm tempted to get this one and try to merge them together.
@@TheRocco96 That would make a sick MOC. Just get this and some spare parts (like more wire fence perhaps)
I did like that one a lot, but this one is just more fun.
Lego City prices are all over the place. Some sets are a complete ripoff, then you get some good value ones. @@imperialbricks1977
First classic space/interstellar sets, and now alcatraz. Sounds like lego city is getting interesting again.
The BURP next to the pipe can easily be removed for more access. Still doesn't make the washing machine area all that more useful but the designer did at least make it slightly better to get into.
Ahhhh shame on me I completely forgot that one!
You can hide the small boat in there, then it's usefull
Jang continues to be the best Lego reviewer on RUclips. A lot of nuanced thought went into this video.
My opinion is that we get a lot of police stations but not enough prisons.
I love all the play features of this set. It's really cool to see the creativity the designers put into this set in using all the extra space down below the main build.
Lego ain't cheap these days, but I can see that they're getting smarter with their designs. A noticeable improvement over the last couple of years, for sure.
The cup reminds me of that meme in movies, where someone in prison rattles a cup or can against the bars to make that funny sound.
Seems like getting two of those sets could allow for a really nice MOC. Decently large island and possibly enough pieces to enclose the rooms - 2 cells, entrance, 3 or 4 staff rooms (including tower)?
Lego casually makes Alcatraz
They've made several at least
If I would go to prison and discover a hole in the cell, with a spider 2/3 the size of a human living in there... I would rather jump in the shark-infested waters, even if no boat would be waiting for me.
For a LEGO CITY set, I am impressed by the level of detail. The $100 overpriced apartment set from last year was practically empty. 😢
10:36 The best bit is is that they allow you to extend the track if you've got those rail pieces
Such a nice playset at a fair price. Way to go, LEGO! Awesome review, Jang!
I know a few people don't really like BURPs and the like, but I have a lot of nostalgia for them and genuinely think they're good for both playsets and display sets if used correctly, like here.

I like what I see. But one thing that continues to bug me about LEGO jails/prisons is that they should give you the same number of beds as they do prisoner figures.
this set feels like it'd be really fun to build on and modify. especcially with the island base
Not a set for me, but seems like if I were a kid this would be fun. Good review as always.
Love this set, but I'm gonna have to save this for waaaaaay later in the year. I like the amount of storytelling in this set and the play features are really good and well integrated. Great set! Love the island vibe and all the play features. Would have loved to own this set as a kid

I feel like this year and going forward will be great for Lego and I’m happy to see this set it so much better then u expected

The mug is probably for toilet wine
I love the irony of Lego police stations being designed for the criminals to escape.
I found there was a good balance between big parts and smaller microbuilds & decorative elements. Looks good and lot of fun thanks to the action features !
Cool, cool set... Now I just need a minifigure of Nicolas Cage, Sean Connery, Ed Harris and company! :)
I think reusing a standard crate for the cart adds to the look, it makes it look like the trash materials that the criminals probably built it out of.
*Well, I will simply say this is surprisingly even better from Lego, when I did not expect it to be.* Tempting while watching this review.
Excellent review. I like these sort of sets, but I've no place to display and little place to store, so I'm "stuck" "only" buying my favorite genres (namely Space, Castle, Supers (Marvel), and Star Wars).
A really impressive set but I do think this must be one of the darkest City sets I've ever seen from Lego in it's theme
the play value looks amazing, haven't seen such a nice set for kids for a long time
That back to back “closed off” mode looks like it could almost be official with a couple mods. The layout makes sense and looks pretty good.
Cool set, overall nicely designed with lots of playing spaces but with some fine modifications it would be much, much better.
Looks like the City line go a new manager to lead it? Surprisingly good 👍
So, we don’t get military stuff from LEGO, but we get police sets complete with a prison. Lol.
Pretty great set, I think accessibility for minifigures and options to close the set up should be improved
The new prison uniforms are awesome, more accurate to real life
I love the *The Rock* reference with the minecart.
Man Lego needs to bring coast guard back the 2018 coast guard boat with the headquarters was so good
I really like the set. They didn't waste too many pieces on the vehicles. After all this isn't a vehicle set. The fun of the escapes and the general play features are great. The inclusion of the dog and the angled helipad give the set a big + in terms of fleshing out the display value.

Missed chance on making if possible to make a closed building. Hinges might have worked out well. But apart from that, it looks pretty good.
Really cool set. I especially like the underground featueres and would've loved this as a kid. I saw this -30% meaning 70€. Kind of want to get it because of that but I don't really buy city sets anymore.
$100 isn't even an outrageous price. Good job Lego
The ability to separate it into halves makes me wonder if we will get an expansion set of sorts
I love how this set's prison warden looks exactly the same as the museum nightguard from Ninjago s5 ep1.
Two of these sets combined would probably make a nice full island prison.
Seems like a possible reference to Alcatraz. Nice to see something a little more unique.
Does really seem like a good value and product.
The old Prison Island is my favourite Lego City set other than the trains.
Definitely good play features. Maybe a little controversial to make a Lego Alcatraz, but for DC and Marvel Super Hero fans this has to be a PERFECT spooky setting for Super Hero battles
looks fantastic! Lego should bring back the bigger heavy lift helicopters like in the 2010s
9:43 is that a reference to Hidden Side? I guess that's nice to see.
Seems like it could be used for an Arkham Asylum moc or Alcatraz from CoD Zombies lol.
the comparisons will be intriguing haha
It's on sale already for €78,- here. Really tempting to pick it up
I agree with you on the helicopter, it is kind of meh, but Lego knows that kids love helicopters and if I were a kid I’d certainly appreciate it more
The earlier Prison Island is my favourite Lego City set apart from the trains. It is more functional than this one, in that it has more cells.
Excellent review as always!
Great to see the Rock Raiders crystal in a fun color, though that color isn't rare or anything
Excited to convert this over to a creepy, abandoned prison island for Scooby-Doo. (Maybe combine it with the Scooby Lighthouse.)
I like that you can build the prison and not have to be in a prison
Oh yeah, the vibes of this one, it had personality, I like it
This set gives me the vibes of the prison island in the Lego City Undercover video game, a bit smaller though
It could be better, but I do love this set. I want those prisoners!
Good to see cops have graduated from donuts to croissants.
Not for me, but that's a heck of kid's playset. Lots of neat details and design ideas and play features. (And no, it's not just your personal bias about the helicopter, Jang. It's just a weak, throwaway design in an otherwise really nice-looking set.)
You have to put those captured Blacktron minifigs someplace.
If they did this to be officially perfectly closeable, it would be so much better AND they could have avoided the complaints about being only a facade of a prison...
The biggest weakness to me is that it only has the one cell. If the entire island is a prison, it should hold more people than the holding cell at the police station on the mainland.
Imagine getting this as a kid and being able to let your imagination run, endless play
prints instead of sticker and two studs deeper build and it would be a banger.
Wow this set looks fantastic awesome review jang 👍
It is a good set for kids they can lock up bad guys
That big scratch on the middle canopy for the guard tower is big oof.
Thank you JANG!
I really like the washing room actually, i think i would have gottena kick out of that and some of the other mundane eloements of this set. I like this set and I like the earlier one even more. It is my favourite Lego City set apart from the trains.
I really love that pipe!
I absolutely love this. :)
Good review, appreciated your closing remark. The barbed wire feels out-of-place and a bit hard for a children's toy to me.
During the whole review I was like "lego don't do guns... but a prison like that is fine ?"... I'm glad Jang has some reserves too. (Don't get me wrong, I'd have loved that as a kid. It's just... of very questionnable taste)
So the prison has a laundry room, and none of the staff have wondered about that big ol' Dufresne pipe going through there.
I mean if the kids already have a bunch of polise stations surely they need a place to lock up some of the more peskier inmates they have?
0:33 is that white piece on top of the boat new?
Great review
Just bought 2 of these to combine into a bigger islansd.
It looks like a gigantic tomato in the lunch room, lol.
Time to make this into mob of the dead!!!
This is a set that would be 10 times funnier if you replace every face with classic Lego smile heads
So since I can buy this for $70 it is a steal, right?
I am also surprised with the price in the right way right now 60335 and 60419 is same price here
Still feels bit hollow for the price imo. I remembered the old prison is more enclosed hence looks like a complete structure
Despite the better value of this new one, I still prefer the old prison island just in the layout and overall look of the thing. This new one isn't bad but it just feels a little flat and has a lack of cells.
Very interesting set
