Apparently a sequel was planned to be made only a couple of years after the original but it never got sought out due to Aardman and Dreamworks falling out and the sequel finally started development around 2017 so it took 6 years to make... this is why it took so long, but a sequel was always planned after the success of the orginal.

My thought exactly. As much as I loved the first film, it was a film that greatly stood on its own and simply didn't need any sequel or spin-off, as the story was downright perfect and led to a satisfactory conclusion for all involved. And if they decided to make a sequel, they should have put their best effort in and made something really great and unique that's totally different from the first film and maybe even better. Toy Story and Shrek succeeded in making a sequel that was almost better than the first film. Here, they clearly did not.

It doesn't spoil the legacy of the original, I'll give you that... But it's still a huge step back from the original for having a lighter tone and such a generic Disney direct to video sequel premise of a "rebellious offspring not listening to the protective former protagonist/parent" which even in 2000 when the original came out was a tired plot there.

I think Frizzle was there to add more insensitive for Molly to go back into the farm. And Rocky, he has probably been driven to less of an inproviser because of MOLLY. Also, I think Frizzle was hilarious, "Cooler than penguin's toenails" and "Buckeh" are very funny lines. In the nugget machine's room, the music is just so crisp when Molly jumps from the buckehs, slides down the pipes, onto another pipe , to land on the girder. Also, the nugget machine's design really emphasizes the scale and danger of Fun-land Farms. The scene where the chickens are trapped in the silo has them reflecting, especially Molly. I think here, after Molly's reflection, Rocky reverts to his inprovising self. And! Doing the estamation, given that there where at least 280 chickens in the original movie, but probably 300, while Ginger got collar number 982 or something, there would have been 900+ chickens. (There's also other chickens wearing 900+ collars in the vast crowd.) If Mrs. Tweedy had been able to cook all of the chickens, she would have got her revenge 300fold. Phew. That was a lot...

@@dillonhall7514Yeah, while the original also had its nonsense, like how Ginger was able to casually hold her entire weight after she cut the ropes with the axe, making her fall perfectly straight on top of that gap in the machine, which caused it to malfunction even more than ever before (something that was a constant foreshadowed issue the machine had), and how she survived the boiling hot gravy explosion that obliterated most of the farm while she was at the very middle of it, that was still very funny and satisfying to see, alongside a sense of karma how Mr. Tweedy chose self preservation over helping his abusive wife, and while she lived the explosion, it did quite the number on her, it left her in such a state where all she seemingly needed was one more hit to be taken down, which the large wall falling on top of her did, which also made many think she was legit gone for good
While in this movie, it feels she overstay her welcome because the chickens themselves are also dragging the movie for longer by rescuing the rest of the chickens as an afterthought to extend the runtime, and the way she's beat down and how she comes back feels forced in both ways tbh, and both were far less fun and memorable tbh, and her final defeat isn't as satisfying because another much physically weaker character already faced that fate, and came out only dizzy at worst, no matter how they amped it up, its pretty obvious she's gonna make it out of that one just fine

I get the feeling that what we consider "Aardman style" of comedy is in reality just "Nick Park style" of comedy. Whenever he is involved with a project (Wallace & Gromit, Creature Comfort, Chicken Run) we get that charming, dry, silly and very british "dad humor" with word puns that are so bad they're actually genius. You know, what we think of as the Aardman brand of humor. When Nick's not around that humor disappears though. Sam Fell has made three movies that I'm aware of (Flushed away, ParaNorman and now Chicken Run 2) and they all suffer from a distinct lack of humor. They are well made and inoffensive but you don't laugh (or even chuckle) at all. They begin, have a middle and an end. That's it. No personality or charm.
Furthermore, this movie felt like a complete cash grab. It didn't need to be made since the first movie had a perfect ending and didn't set up a sequel. Now, it doesn't ruin the original by it's mere existense but it feels very much like a soulless, corporate product rather than a labor of love.
I also don't get the recasting of most voice actors. Kicking out Julia Sawalha (55 .y.o.) with the explanation that she sounds "too old" and then substituting her with Thandie Newton (51 y.o.) is a weird choice. They also didn't even try to get the new V.A's to sound like the original which makes it sound weird. This is esp. true for Rocky. I'm sure if you're a kid you don't care but as an adult it doesn't sound right.

Yeah, this movie was pretty meh. Unlike the Average Critic, I didn't really enjoy the conflict between Ginger and her daughter (who were clearly the only characters, except for maybe Mrs. Tweedy, with whom the script had any idea what to do.) Not that that part was terrible or anything. It made dramatic sense. In fact, it made so much sense that I found it really predictable and boring. That could have been alleviated though if the movie had a better sense of humor. I have to agree with the Critic though that this is a good contender for Aardman's least witty movie. I will say though I started to enjoy it more once it got to the factory and all its absurd details. That part felt more like the original Chicken Run, if not as good, and kept the sequel from being a complete waste of time. I really was surprised though to see that Karey Kirkpatrick, one of the original screenwriters, also worked on this movie. The quality gap between them was so big that I figured none of the writers had returned.

This movie feels like one of those old Disney direct to video sequels they made back in the 90s like the little mermaid two or the lion King two. I mean, just think about it in both of those movies, the main characters both have a daughter, who is outgoing and likes to go outside their parents, boundaries leave their home, and they both get into trouble. They meet new characters on the way on their adventure, and eventually cry to their parents about how wrong they were about wanting to leave their home. Also, in the lion, King two Simba’s pride Simba literally has PTSD from Mufasa’s death. Ginger has PTSD from living at the chicken farm. This movie feels like they just took those two movies scripts and mushed them together and then this is what we got. Also, in all of the old Disney sequels, they almost never got the original voice cast back and all the voices would sound super off. This movie was seriously so predictable. I knew exactly what was gonna happen exactly what ginger was going to say at certain points it was just so forgettable. They turned Rocky into a dumb idiot. Dad, who is clumsy, they turned ginger into an overbearing overprotective mother, but never really give any reason to why she’s so overprotective, yes obviously she has PTSD from living at the farm but you would think that she would want her daughter to Have freedom like she never had growing up. And Molly’s character was just so bland. She had no depth to her at all .So basically this is just a Aardman direct to video sequel.

Zachari levi sound a bit like the old Rocky BUT the character's personality was changed. He is an idiot and not funny or charming. Why? Same for Ginger. You think she would love to be outside and wants to explore the world but be prudent too. Now, she is strict and overportective. I found her annoying plus the new voice actress didn't put a lot of efforts in her performance. Thank's for ruining likables characters producers 😒🙄

I'm sorry but your point about Frizzle is absolutely dreadful. Frizzle serves a narrative purpose to the film, acting as motivation for Molly to want to save the rest of the chickens instead of leaving them behind for her own survival. It leads to a massive element of Gingers arc too, realising that just because she is free does not mean the fight for chicken-kind is over, thus leading to her decision to actively seek out chicken farms to help more chickens. I'd argue Frizzle serves more a narrative purpose then characters such as Fowler and Bunty.
And the point about her accent, god. Should scouse people just not be in films because you find the sound of their accent annoying? Can Scouse people not just exist in films without a big deal made made about their accent the same way people who speak like you can be? Your point here comes off as ignorant, do better.

I’m not saying scouse accent can’t be in films of course not! But the way they present the accent isn’t entertaining to me. But hey thanks for the comment! 😄

@@theaveragecritic3308 "Entertaining" is a very vague word. How do you present an accent as "entertaining"? How is Frizzle's scouse accent less entertaining then any other character's voice? What's wrong with a character just sounding scouse like how every other character sounds the way they do?

    • @theaveragecritic3308

@@julkataylor9974 because some people have irritating voices and accents. Just look to Sarah Silverman or Janice from friends. And while it sometimes it can be entertaining in this case I didn’t find it as such in this film. That’s part of the role as a voice performer to find a voice that is entertaining.

    • @julkataylor9974

@@theaveragecritic3308 Ah, so we're circling back to my original point, you think Frizzle shouldn't of sounded scouse because you personally find the sound of scouse people's voices annoying. Frizzle sounds like how a scouse person sounds in real life. How is does that make for a bad performance apart from your personal prejudices? Scouse people have often been underrepresented in film, and Josie Sedgwick-Davis (Frizzle's VA) is quite proud of how this role will help pave the way for the better representation of scouse people in media. Your point comes off as quite bigoted honestly. The fact that you made the point in the video to show your face when making this point so the viewer could see the distain in your face when talking about how irritated you were to hear someone sound scouse in the film is quite worrying. Please try do better.

Its an ok movie not amazing, but most of your points at least in the the first half of this video are kinda useless.... Saying that the movie did nothing for this English accent the same way peaky blinders did is asking for apples to fall from the sky. The first movie may be something unique but really asking a movie to change the perception of people globally about a certain accent...... man .....
As for frizzle the reason she exists is so that molly has a friend to experience everything with/conversation partner otherwise it would be a long part of the movie where she would only be talking internally doesnt work.

It’s really difficult to understand. 🤣I’m going to assume you’re not British. The accent or rather her voice is very annoying because of the accent. In the UK accents are a big thing and I’m saying accents that are considered not very nice on the ears can be made entertaining like peaky blinders. And I think without Frizzle you could still have the same movie. But thanks for the comment my friend! Atleast we can agree we don’t think much of the movie 🤣
