- The picturesque gorge of the River Severn in Shropshire boasts two significant landmarks of the early industrial revolution. In the village of Coalbrookdale in 1709, Abraham Darby I successfully smelted iron using coal instead of charcoal - an act that made iron production cheaper, faster and less dependent on geography. This new iron was also stronger and revolutionised small changes already taking place throughout Britain: the process of industrialisation. In 1779, Darby's grandson was at the helm of the company when its boldest project yet was undertaken... the building of the world's first free-standing iron structure - the iron bridge.

Thank you for another really enjoyable video. It's a pity the Severn Valley Railway never extended their line to Ironbridge.
This was so interesting thank you from New Zealand
Brilliant video
Demolishing the power station cooling towers at Ironbridge a couple of years back was a big mistake. That place documented the carbon age from beginning to end. Imagine if all the other relics had been blown up by property developers.
Yeah it would have made a good museum in itself
Oh wow! Very interesting 🤔
Super post, used to live nearby for many years, the high arch of the bridge was to allow the Severn Trows, - boats to clear the masts as they went under with their goods to the south, also the design of the cast frames was made as a kit of parts, based on wooden mockups, so once cast, you just slot and bolt the light but strong arches together to make the whole, less is more in this case.
Well presented and extremely enjoyable, Ollie. Many thanks.
Love your videos mate, keep em coming!
Thanks very much 😁
went to iron bridge as a kid would be nice to re-visit. great vid as always!
Olly, that was a brilliant video. I studied about the Industrial Revolution while in High School. I visited Ironbridge several times including school trips. And now I just saw this and can honestly say that I learned more watching your 11 minutes 55 seconds video and listening to your narrative than I ever did in the past. Could have done with you doing youtube videos on Calculus and Quantum Mechanics. Cheers, Ian 😵💫
Hello Ollie. Over the years I tried to get information and learn about Lancashire and its past mainly Manchester ,I found a lot of literature and nowadays in the internet as much as I could in platforms like you tube etc.Not until I found you I have enjoyed learning both in the information you give on a topic or the visuals with pictures. Thank you so much for all your hard work that I am sure goes into it . Saludos from Spain
Brilliant work! I really enjoyed and appreciated that, Ollie.
Your episodes are steadily getting even better-made, all the time.
Thanks very much, that's very kind
Incredible good video! You found lots of supporting photos and made stunning images by drone. I love it!
Super interesting and informative
Thank you!
I think you may have found the remains of Stonefang Tunnel there
Pushed the bar up to the highest level with this one Ollie! Well done!
I’m hoping to visit the iron bridge. Great video 👍
Great drone shots of this wonderful bridge!
Absolutely the right connection to draw: revolutionary innovation and our current predicament. My personal Industrial Revolution heroes are George and Robert Stevenson. Their story is one of hard work, talent, modesty and vision. And yet, all that they developed and built has brought us here. Oh well, so it goes.
Yes absolutely. There's no blame of course. Their ingenuity should be celebrated. It's just unfortunate that all things have consequences, which is the next problem for people to tackle. It's all just part of our navigation through history.
Very enjoyable, could have been crap but it wasn,t.
Thanks.
You deserve more subs ... You're video style is great ...pure or not 😜.
Haha nice. I says the wrong things sometimes but I try 😉
Another Excellent video Ollie keep them coming 👍
Excellent! I visit Ironbridge and the area every two years, one of the most interesting areas ever! Your video is wonderful!
Brilliant video.
I came to Coalbrookdale and Ironbridge on an educational school trip many years ago. Memorable then and still so now. Thanks for refreshing my memory.
Excellent vid. Ollie - really enjoyed it . I've always wanted to go and see Ironbrdge. One day soon I hope!
Quick question: At 3:26 What was built first, The Iron Foundry or the Viaduct?? Or maybe they were built together?? Just wondering.
The foundry was there long before the viaduct
@@alexfrance500 That's what I thought..... Thanks
Foundry
