Most WW2 vets and others who've served in combat, have been and are pretty tight lipped about some of their greatest service to their countries. Many decades after the sinking of Yamato, this veteran pilot still felt the impact of participating in the deaths of so many enemy sailors. The exhilaration of victory in the moment, passes quickly. But the guilt and impact of taking lives, lasts the rest of their own.

In 1942, responding to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the U.S. Navy converted two passenger steamships into aircraft carriers to train more than 15,000 pilots and 40,000 deck crews in the safety of Lake Michigan.
And only 100+ aircarft ended up at the bottom of Lake Michigan. Compared to the 15,000 pilots and the numerous sorties they did per pilot per aircraft. Let alone the percentage of mechanical issues, weather, and numerous other issues which could have led to the aircraft wrecks.

My father was born in 1937 and grew up in Winnetka. He used to talk about watching the carriers as a kid.

I was a active duty Marine 05-14. We were briefed by Navy Docs frequently the last couple years on STDs. We were told roughly "ONE IN FOUR" Sailors had STDs. I always thought about those stats when I was at the base strip.club or in the base pool doing swim qual.

Great docu. IIRC, there's an exhibit at the National Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola paying tribute to how many of those aircraft were lost in the lake.

its a shame at least one of the lake carriers wasnt preserved as a museum. they were so consequential to the final victory.

1988, my step dad, ( retired now ) was one the flight deck a carrier, and did shore duty in beeville, and got his arm broken in 2 places from an arrester cable breaking and snapping. He was working at the goliad air field , where the new navy pilots practiced touch n gos before sea duty.. NAS Chase Field, Beeville Tx. we lived on base housing and i went to FMC elementary.. we moved around as military kids, and i still did 20 yrs as a Marine myself.. those flight deck guys had steele in them.. very dangerous spot for sure!

I am the only grandson of the See&Bee's last 1st mate John Carlson. I have all sorts of pictures of my grandfather, who unfortunately I never had the chance to know, since my grandfather passed away 11yrs before I was born in 74. My grandfather was born in 1901 in Norway and immigrated to Cleveland after his service in the merchant marine. I have tons of artifacts from the C&B. I wish there were still beautiful excursion ships that plyed the waters of the lakes.
(Not the small ones that sail them now) The SeeandBee was as elegant as they came..my grandfather's pictures don't lie.

That’s not true that’s not the only war birdcage. There’s one other one that’s flying. I would know because when I was a kid here in Jacksonville Florida at her long airfield they had a birdcage Corsair by Roy Stafford so that’s not true and it’s flying so I don’t where you’re talking about but you got your inside wrong.
