Batman wears undies over his pants for the same reason Superman and so many other classic comics characters do: it's a callback to old-timey circus "strongman" tradition. Circuses back in the day would have a "strongman" act, and we hadn't quite figured out stretchy fabrics at the time, so it was likely that their trousers would tear while performing "daring feats" and acrobatics, etc, so to keep shows family-friendly and reduce the likelihood of someone's crotch suddenly popping out, they would wear a second, shorter garment over their trousers as a precaution. This iconography carried over into early comics to symbolize "very strong, larger-than-life" characters.

Heck yeah! I love Batman, and I adore the Arkham games. The voice acting is absolutely top notch; Kevin Conroy (Batman) and Mark Hamill (Joker) are considered by a lot of fans to be the best and most iconic voices for them. As to how Batman knew that something was up: he's a detective as well as a martial artist. He doesn't have superpowers but is very smart, and he knew that Joker wasn't acting normal. There's a ton of bonus info in the Arkham games that imo make them a great way to get to know a lot of the Batman lore, but what I love most about this game is that it makes you feel like Batman when you play. As to the costume, it actually goes way back to circus strongmen in the early 20th century. That was what they wore at the time, and it translated over into superhero costumes, especially for older heroes like Superman and Batman. A lot of modern versions don't have the undies on top aesthetic, a lot of older versions do.
@@drsophiedarling He did, yes! Batman and Harley's voice actors also were from Batman the Animated Series (at least for this game; Harley's va changes in later games).
@@drsophiedarling I can't blame them for that haha. It's honestly an incredibly good show, with beautiful animation and music, and actually hit so hard with the stories they told that it permanently changed the lore! For example, Harley came from btas first. If you end up wanting to dive into some Batman at some point I would *super* rec it.
I'm not familiar with this game, but I grew up loving the 90s Batman: Animated Series show, so it was exciting to hear the familiar voice actors from that! Kevin Conroy is the quintessential Batman and Mark Hamill does such a good Joker!
yesss such a good game series, you're gonna love it! also if this is your first kind of introduction to batman then it's a great one! i feel like there's no movie that really dives this deep into batman himself (other than the batman 2022) in these games u really get to know this world and its super interesting, he's a really flawed character and he's really cool.
I’m so happy to see many more people getting into DC know weather it’s the games movies or cartoons 🔥 Kevin Conroy will always be my & many peoples fav voice of Batman / Bruce if you look up any episode of the animated series the clear distinction you hear in his voice is magnificent! Especially cause his Bruce Wayne voice is just his normal voice & Mark Hamill is the Joker who was also in many episodes of the Animated series & Justice league shows. Love these games! Rip to Kevin

I played this quite a few years ago, but still a long time after it had first come out. It’s great! I played the very popular follow up Arcum City for a while, but the open world aspect actually kind of put me off a bit. This was the game that cemented the “playing it really makes you feel like Batman” meme because basically every review of it at the time said the same thing. Some people complain that the combat is too kind of “on rails” but I think it’s more about feeling cool and powerful while you’re fighting and it does a great job of that. Hope you’ll keep going with this one. It’s really fun. Also mercurial: mer KYUR ee ul It means flighty, hard to anticipate, unpredictable. Based on the properties of the element mercury which were thought of as weird and mysterious.
Oh and I LOVE inverted take down. I replay these games every few years and always end up doing that as much as possible. As for the some the realism things you note - well apart from the fact it's a superhero video game of course, things like looking up while Batman is flying from perch to perch are kinda addressed in the games - I like to consider that Batman is flying around up there in the dark like a shadow so less noticeable unless the enemy has already spotted you.
@@drsophiedarling If a gargoyle already has a victim hanging from it you can't use it again for inverted takedown unless you cut the first down with a batarang - which I do and create a little mound of knocked out bad guys. (I think this applies to the first game - in later games combat/options improve and gets built on)
YES! Love this game, one of my favourites! Really hope you enjoy it, even if you don't know all the characters. Hopefully that just makes them even more fun as you can experience them for the first time. :)
Glad to see you're enjoying this game, it's a certified legend. Also, if Batman's tidy blackies distract you too much, iirc you can unlock different outfits
welcome to the Batman arkham games . You're gonna love it , lots of twists and turns. Don't forget to use your detective vision and remember your gadgets.
At 55:04 you passed an audio log on a table lol, right before you started talking about not wanted to miss audio logs. If you go into detective mode it usually highlight things in the area that you can interact with.
9:49 Sorry but that's the first time I've ever heard anyone ask that. It's because that's the design of Batman's suit as has been ever since he was created in 1939. It's a classic staple of many superhero suits like Superman and many more. What else would it look like?
That's very fair - it was just something that stood out to me and made me wonder why. I know a lot of people in the comments have mentioned that it's a throwback to Strongmen in the Circus Acts which is really cool!
Well, not everyone reads comics or is familiar with the traditional costumes. In most superhero movies, trunks have been done away with. Personally, I think Batman, Superman, and other superheroes look weird without them, almost like they're naked. Yet someone who's used to that look will think it's the trunks that look weird! In the end, it doesn't matter. It's all in good fun.
somethings the comics show better is how batman villains are all reflections of him but through the lens of different mental illnesses and this game explores that really well too.
@@drsophiedarling I'm glad you're reading all the lore you're picking up and keeping an eye out for audio logs! Some are obvious like Two Face is bipolar, but I think you'll have learning about the villains. The theme Batman comics were written with is the fact that Batman is no different to them and probably belongs in Arkham just as much as they do. They all became what they are because they had "just one bad day".
Playing catch up with this series! Haven't played this game but it looks great. I definitely loved The Animated Series as a kid and this scratches that nostalgic itch.

I think the Arkham games are a perfect way to understand that world. Fans will also send you some important Batman comic books, if you're lucky.
Ooh real nostalgia trip watching this. Hope it will be a full series although I do anticipate a number of shooting incidents until you get a handle on the stealth. Honestly the art style still holds up, although the potato faces looked bad at the time! The voice casting carrying on from the series was a genius move. I feel like the camera positioning is a bit dated now, although it seems to always show off the swooping cape

A whole lot of lore hidden in those games. Like the voice tapes or the secret room that teases the sequel game, but that wasnt found by anyone before the sequel released
Gotta remember that Batman has a No Killing room. To the point where his refusal to kill is sometimes borderline insane. Edit: I just realized I wrote "no killing ROOM", which Im gonna keep unchanged cuz that's funny af
@@drsophiedarling yep. The game assumes you know this going in so it's not a spoiler, but Batman's No Kill Rule is arguably THE defining trait of the character (and consequently, Joker's main goal in like every piece of media he's in, is to make Batman break that one rule)

Old superheroes have underwear over their pants because they were dressed like old timey circus strongmen. That's why Superman wears them at least and he's like the prototypical American superhero so a lot of them sort of aped his style in one way or another. So now it's just tradition. They try to take them away sometimes but they always return to the underpants eventually. And I don't know why old timey strongmen wore briefs over their tights but I assume it was for modesty.

@@drsophiedarling It's a lot harder and more complex than BG3, but in the same boat. So you should have the mechanics down fairly easily. DOS2 is really vague in what you need to do to finish missions, so I find myself looking things up a lot. I like that you can basically kill every character though. And once I got the fight mechanics down, it made the game a lot easier to get through. The combat requires you to utilize the environment, use height, use the objects around you. I find myself using scrolls and bombs and I never use them in conventional RPGs lol. BG3 is from the same studio, but BG3 was made to be a gateway game so it's easier to play and understand it. 1st time I played DOS2, I gave up after a few hours lol. By the end of the main quest (and as someone who loves the first two), I was so very, very done with Knight.
For sure but what I meant is that there's more direction and story in comparison to other metroidvania's where it's easy to get turned around and feel like there's no progression being made! :)

One little tidbit if you want to see what happens to the Riddler, you will have to beat him by collecting the 240 riddles. I personally think it is worth it :)
It's always interesting watching someone trying out something for the first time. I know much about Batman, and listening to your theories is fascinating. I'm playing this game for the second time ever these days. It is one of the best. I hope you enjoy it to the end.
I really like the fluidity of the combat!!
Mark Hamill is an icon. Didn't he voice the Joker in the Batman animated series right?!
@@drsophiedarling He did, yes! Batman and Harley's voice actors also were from Batman the Animated Series (at least for this game; Harley's va changes in later games).
@@emeralddarkness I vaguely remember the animated series from my younger brothers being obsessed with it 😂❤️
@@drsophiedarling I can't blame them for that haha.
I would recommend playing!! It's phenomenal!!
yesss such a good game series, you're gonna love it! also if this is your first kind of introduction to batman then it's a great one!
i feel like there's no movie that really dives this deep into batman himself (other than the batman 2022) in these games u really get to know this world and its super interesting, he's a really flawed character and he's really cool.
I really love that they included the little bio information on all the characters I am meeting too! I think it's such a cool concept!
Subbed cant wait to see you play this game and the other 3 games!!
AW thank you very much!!
Oooh now this is very different than the usual. I'm excited!
I HOPE YOU LOVE IT ADOCH! Miss you btw!
The rattling teeth are collectibles.
It's lovely to see that these games and the series continue to exist as fan favourites because it's an amazing legacy to the talent of Kevin Conroy :)

Welcome to the Aslume

It feels super fun!! I'm excited to delve further into it!!
It's such a cool move and definitely will help make stealthing a bit easier for me!
@@drsophiedarling If a gargoyle already has a victim hanging from it you can't use it again for inverted takedown unless you cut the first down with a batarang - which I do and create a little mound of knocked out bad guys.
(I think this applies to the first game - in later games combat/options improve and gets built on)
I remember watching my wee brother play these games (he's a huge Batman fan) and I'm looking forward to seeing you play! ❤
Aw thank you lovely! I'm so excited!
When it comes to the Riddler, scan EVERYTHING -- it's likely the answer to one of his riddles. Just scan something that seems to stand out.
Have fun!
I'll lock that in my mind!
OO?! I love that!! Kind of like Spiderman with the different suits!
In this game you can only wear the default suit for the story mode but the other Arkham games allow you to change costumes in the story
Great choice this is one of my favorites superheroes games and i hope to see more
I definitely intend to play more! :D

Aw welcome!! Yeah, I usually do around 1 hour 30 or 1 hour 40 BUT I had to fly to Paris so needed to film, edit, and upload very quickly!!
At 55:04 you passed an audio log on a table lol, right before you started talking about not wanted to miss audio logs. If you go into detective mode it usually highlight things in the area that you can interact with.
AH good shout!! Can I double back for the audio log or am I locked out?!
@@drsophiedarling The building should open up again later to go look for stuff you missed.
Enjoy your first step into this incredible story. Also like how you take the time to read the bios and learn about Batman and his enemies.
Oh I love reading in games so I'll definitely be keeping track of that!!
@@bonchbonch Thankfully the trunks are coming back in James Gunn's Superman movie.
Happy early Halloween 🎃🎃🎃
The Arkham games are some of my fave games ever, they're incredible.
somethings the comics show better is how batman villains are all reflections of him but through the lens of different mental illnesses and this game explores that really well too.
OH I LOVE THAT!! You know me - literary analysis QUEEN!

I'm one day late with this comment but welcome! You're part of the Arkham Community now. You'll see a lot of die hard Batman fans in the commenting section. I think the Arkham games are a perfect way to understand that world.
Fans will also send you some important Batman comic books, if you're lucky.
You're never late nor are you early - you arrive precisely when you mean to! Aw I'm glad to be accepted as a newbie in the community already!!
It's a full series! Honestly the faces made me laugh a little - I think it's the eyes!
Btw❤❤❤. I did nt. know. Kevin. died may his family be comforted🎉😢🎉

It is indeed a series!! I know :( SILKSONG NEEDS TO BE OUT SOON!!

Wait, he does?!
@@drsophiedarling yep. The game assumes you know this going in so it's not a spoiler, but Batman's No Kill Rule is arguably THE defining trait of the character (and consequently, Joker's main goal in like every piece of media he's in, is to make Batman break that one rule)
Batman is older character created in 1939...in that time superhero use wear under out.

Hi Sophie love your vid you should try Tom Raider. It's a great adventure game.
Oh I do own them!! I'll add them to the list!!
You should play Cult of the Lamb! It has a Minecraft/Hollow Knight theme to it. You have to take care of your cult members while also defeating baddies at the same time, I think you might like it. Spiritfarer is also really good, but is more platformer/cozy indie game.

I love these games. Got the trilogy for the Switch for Christmas. I've veen obsessing over Divinity Original Sin 2 lately though. Highly recommended if you like isometric crpgs
I've been playing BG3 but I've heard great things about Divinity so I may need to look into it!
It drops you into the world and basically washes it's hands of you 😂
I liked playing Arkham asylum on hard mode.

Late as ever to the comments! This kinda *is* a MetroidVania, but more linear than usual. Also it has the prestigious honour of being the first game I finished on Normal and IMMEDIATELY started a fresh game on Hard. It’s that good. Also, I approach the straight up combat fights a bit like a rhythm game, I find that helps ☺️ hope you have fun with this!
Nah! No such thing as late! It definitely has some aspects of a metroidvania but I wouldn't say it is strictly one as it has stronger ties to Beat Em Up and Action Adventure genres. I can see aspects of a metroidvania but I wouldn't classify it as one at all from what I've played so far :)
I'm really excited to get back into filming more - I'm also having no issues with the combat yet other than it's really fun and I want to punch more people!
@@drsophiedarling yeah the combat in this game is just wonderfully satisfying. As you get into it and pick up more abilities you’ll be bopping around like a jolly little psychopath, merrily crunching bones with a spring in your step and a song in your heart 😅 it’s so very fun!

@@drsophiedarling if you get to Knight, be prepared to say to yourself “I don’t need to 100% this” Arkham is easy to 100% in a humanly reasonable amount of time and it’s great fun. City is 100%-able with a LOT of time and is still good fun, Knight is a total pain to get anywhere near 100% without doing endless mindless extras and some brutally unnecessarily difficult things. By the end of the main quest (and as someone who loves the first two), I was so very, very done with Knight.
Funny you say it's not a metrovania. Cause it uses alot of the same progression and exploration techniques as a metrovania
For sure but what I meant is that there's more direction and story in comparison to other metroidvania's where it's easy to get turned around and feel like there's no progression being made! :)
