This was so enjoyable and encouraging even for a retired old artist who can no longer use real mediums. I can use Procreate and instantly redo a stroke a dozen times if necessary. I'm grateful to still paint at all. I have rarely been as free as you. You make it look so easy.
Great demonstration & such a strong sense of light. My gouache paints always sink into the multimedia paper I use - I struggle more than I do with watercolours :D
This was a great process video. Just watching others work is so valuable. I am starting again after a long break an still trying to find what interests me. Your work quite caught my attention. New subscriber now! Please include at the very least, a split screen with the active scene and your finished painting. I think that it would be additionally useful if we could see comparison shots maybe twice along the way, just to help us remember what you are looking at. I have no clue whether that is doable or not. I am not a Content Creator. Just a wish 🙂
Hi Malcolm, nice presentation. I'm new to this medium so it was fun to watch you paint. As a Plein Air artist I want to use gouache now instead of oils. Sandy Schmidt from Chicago suburbs.
Oh that looked like so much fun. It's really helpful to see the brush work up close so that I can kind of mimic that kind of movement. Malcolm are you using watercolor brushes?
Thank you, I have a few different brushes. Mostly I use a sable brush to finish. The bigger shapes to start come from cheap synthetic flats. I wish I had more sables though 😅
Hi Malcolm, Just renewed membership - love this gouache video. I would like to try designer gouache - don't even know how to begin. Does the class you referred to include surfaces, application techniques and options for framing finished work - I would prefer not to place under glass. What options and are they durable? Any help, any suggestions. Also liked your palette, can you treat Gouache pretty mush like one does with watercolor - ie. let it dry in a palette and reactive with water; yours looked pretty juicy? thank you.
Thanks really enjoyed this demo. I have just started to experiment with gouache so this was timely. Did you use much water to thin your paint? Also what did you use to sign the painting? Thanks from a happy subscriber!😊
Thank you. Try to use just enough water to get a flow of paint, but not a wash. Layers are necessary much like oils so build up the lights wet over dry/semi dry paint. Signed with a rigger brush. This one a Daler Rowney watercolor rigger.
Great video thank you! My Gouache dry out. How do you keep your gouache wet. Can you please tell me if you are using those gel gouache paints and what brand they are. Thanks.
...to moisten your dried gouache, use a small spray bottle with water and __glycerol__ which you can find at your local chemist/ drugstore or supermarket in the cooking_baking section. Cheers.

A color feast for the eyes to boost one's spirits. Thank you Malcolm.

Oh that is amazing, you make it look like soooo much fun, can’t wait to give it a go! Thank you Malcolm.
Hope you enjoy it Sheena!
Really enjoyed it, and love the technique, loose and vibrant. Exactly what i want to get better at. Thanks so much.
Thanks, Glad it was helpful!
As ever, amazing to watch. I stick with watercolors, but always learn new things as you talk it through. Thanks Malcolm!
Very welcome Clair
Thank you so much, Malcolm!
It's a pleasure!

Thanks Rachel, yes gouache has its quirks. 😊
It looks great, but why use this jarring blue tape?
Looks better coming off?
It seems that so much blue would make it hard to judge the painting’s colors objectively. a neutral color tape might be better.
Beautiful. Thank you, Malcolm.
You're very welcome
Really enjoyed this. Am going to have a bash at it.
That's great, thank you
Wonderful demo! Thanks very much.
Thank you!
Always 1000000 likes and thanks for the joy to learn from you.
😄 Wonderful!

Go for it! Quick outdoor studies are great with gouache. Quick drying so keep a spritzer handy 😉
Really really good to watch this gouache painting, 👍🤗 from Frances uk
Thank you so much 😀
Fabulous painting. I am very new to gauche paint and get very frustrated with it. This has helped a lot. Thank you. 😊
Thank you, more later this week 😉
Wow.. love your colour and technique.
Thanks so much 😊
Very beautiful painting, I love you free and loose style of painting.
Thank you!

Lovely and inspiring. May I ask the size of the painting? The detailed sketch was very useful for me as beginner. 12:07
Thank you, it's an A5 size.
I'm new to gouache and I'm wondering if a fixative substance can be used on it after a painting is dry?
Although it is not necessary, you can stray fixative over dry gouache. I have used spray varnish too in order to frame gouache without glass.

Thank you, yes I cover all of that except for the framing. I have framing gouache without glass on RUclips in a couple of videos.
