Hey Kripp, long time viewer and fellow WoW hunter here. I've always enjoyed your warcraft videos and you and Krippi both have already set the bar for the Diablo 3 community. Can't wait to see what you guys have in store for the viewers down the road! Also, once you guys get your inferno run down, I would love to see those class/role breakdowns you spoke about in your Athene video! Keep up the great work man!
I would never come up with this on my own, very nice video. This really gives me the motivation to go play Diablo 3. And when I need help with a certain aspect of the game I will definetly find it on your channel. -Rox
more of this please, informative videos like these really helps out even me, as I'm in inferno atm I still watch these vids for tips and strats. Keep it up.
Hey man i just wanna leave a quick message, i've found your stream on twitch randomly in the last days of beta and watched you theorycraft about health globes, i was hooked and this video just confirms that - you explain extremely well and sound very passionate about it, making for an incredible watching experience...keep up the good work and enjoy my subscription.
Nice job on the videos Kripp! I really like that you made several videos before the Beta ended so that you could post videos when beta was taken down. Tuesday is soon upon us, my friend.
right, but all stats are based on the items budget. They are essentially as good as the alternative. While armor itself scales linearly, it makes the alternative better as it increases. Someone looking to up their defence who has a lot of armor and no resists, would benefit more from int/resists rather than more str/armor. Of course, the issue is a little more complicated that I mentioned it in the video, but the points are generally accurate.
The more of 1 stat you have, the more the alternatives increase in value. While the stat by itself doesnt diminish, its value does when the alternative becomes better and better. It may seem odd to you because most games only have 1 stat for flat out damage reduction, when there are 2+ it is a different story. As I have said, there is more to it than I say in the video. It is a simplification of many things, but the message on each point is accurate.
Nice, thanks for the video it helped clear up some questions that nobody seems to be able to answer... just got my 3rd level 60, thank you again keep it up hope to see more later
I will be honest, not a super math whiz so some of this flew over my head. But you had a likability and relatability that kept me listening all the way through, and even if I am new to the game and not going to benefit from the over-all math component I still walked away feeling like I learned something. Go you! Thanks so much for the help! =)
Hey Kripp thanks for the awesome vid. A reddit thread started about possible D3 youtubers, saw your channel on the list so you should get some more coverage!
I think this is a fair statement in general -- but at high resist+int values you may have to do the math on it because you may also have some armor% buffs from your allies to overcome the disadvantage.
Great vid! Really descriptive and clear. Thanks :) Based on this, I will re-evaluate my secondary stat choice, and instead balance two secondary stats for the sake of maintaining effective combat.
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM, xD lol thanks for these videos kripp, i check your channel everyday for new content, makes the wait for may 15 go by a little quicker.
Technically, its not diminishing return. However, you are right that spending points on the other stats provide better value. Think of it as trying to make a rectangle with the largest area with a limited width and height. The area increases proportionally when you increases either of them but the best way is to have them equal.
Thanks Krip for the great video. Finally the dodge formula, and how it works. That's pretty crazy if each dodge bonus is a separated check. Monk can have upto 8 dodge rolls if you stack every skills. Talk about harsh diminishing return. Got a question for you. Have you look into which defensive skill roll off first? ie: Block, then dodge, then Armor, and Resist last? or different by class? The order of these defense check will make a pretty big difference especially for Monk, and DH.
Only adding, it'll be more of a matter to calculate when Vit becomes a better stat to stack than Armor/Resistance, because at high damage reduction levels, having a higher base HP will be more beneficial than obtaining more armor, but it doesn't make armor having diminishing returns. Percentages give an exponential increase in benefits, which asymptotes towards infinity as you approach 100%.
First- Awesome video!!! Thank you so much :) Feeling a lot more ready for the game now.. Second- Does it mean that when ignoring passive skills Wizard should have better defensive abilities than barb now? Or maybe barb's armor is what will make him so much more powerful defense-wise? (Unlike d2 even hp per vit is equal now) Third- As good as it may be having a balanced game I'm a little disappointed that like many other games the characters are somewhat identical mechanics wise..
i was only a little excited about diablo and then i started watching your videos as they came out and cant wait!!!!! agggghhhhhhh may 15 is too long away aggggghhhh
This is a pretty good video. I just kinda think (as an example) if you can get 500(lets assume this is max for a moment) in every stat as a barbarian, you'd be doing pretty good damage as well as being a freaking awesome tank as you'd have pretty good everything :D
So now we need someone to theorycraft the basic stats for each class. As a Demon Hunter, what's the most Dexterity I should stack, before it becomes more beneficial to stack Strength or Intellect, for example (when it comes to defense)? And then of course we need to figure out if further Dexterity would still be beneficial since it would continue to add more Damage. Thanks for the vid though, good job helping explain the "defensive" benefits of the stats.
Armor scales linearly when it comes to calculating effective health, meaning that going from 100 -> 110 armor will be just as good as going from 1000 -> 1010 armor. 1% damage reduction is worth more the more damage reduction you already have. An extreme example is going from 0% -> 1% damage reduction provides minimal benefit while going from 98% -> 99% damage reduction effectively doubles your health.
Armor bonus will diminish, but effectiveness won't. Agreed. A very good point for people to keep in mind. Each point of armor benefits your effective health just as much as the last. The diminishing return is merely there to make other defensive stats more appealing. The most effective players will maintain a good balance of all defensive stats.
Q2: so the defense order is: (base damage*damage modifier1*DM2...DMn), dodge check, absorbs (shields, immunities, etc), then block check or other "reduces damage by amount" and only then (remaining damage*(1-reduction from armor)*81-reduction from resistances) ? I guess so, but can't be sure.
@Kripparrian I think you may have misrepresented the diminishing returns on armor. One thing you have to think of is say you have 90% resist from armor and go to 95% then you effectively halved the damage you till take; now 100 dmg does 5 dmg to you instead of 10. If you go from 98% to 99% effectively you just halved the incoming damage, you'd be taking 1dmg/100 instead of 2dmg/100. I'd like to see the curve on effectiveness not bonus. TL;DR Amor bonus may diminish, but effectiveness may not.
You need to put summaries in a spreadsheet or something. As much as i love your videos, i'd love to have a cliffnotes version that i could reference rather than find that specific spot again.
Indeed, my 2nd post as an addition said the same thing. Good to know we're on the same page, but taking INT as a Barbarian will never be more beneficial than more STR, as you said, resistances are multiplicative, and I'd be surprised if Armor and Resists are ADDED, they are certainly also multiplicated (or, in game, one applies after the other). The decision will be between STR and VIT, and can be summed so: EHP = HP*((100/(100-(Armor/(Armor+(50*Clvl)))))*(100/(100-(INT/(INT+(50*Clvl))))))
damage reduction via skills or passive or something. I don't know how those scale with the pre-existing resist. But what is said in the video is still true. When you get more and more armor, it takes MORE armor than it would take Int or Resist All (if you're a barb) to negate the same amount of damage. I think that's the principle Kripparrian is talking about here.
thats cool, but you can always compare armor vs resists with the same method. Those are also stats, but have no DPS increase at all. Also, for a dex class, str vs int is clearly more relevant than for barbs lets say.
Where do those 100's come from? After accounting for the creature level, shouldn't EHP = HP/((1-Armor_Red) * (1-Int_Red)? Or EHP = HP * 1/((1-Armor_Red)*(1-Int_Red))? Am I wrong in thinking you need to change those 100's to 1's? Also, the diminishing returns from the Armor formula (1/x) and the returns from the damage reduction formula (1/(1-x); x
The only thing I don't understand is the dodge chart around 5:20, it shows 0-100, 100-500, etc. Is it actually 0-99 or is it 101-500? I want to know where the 100 really lies.
100 x (1 - 0.45) x (1 - 0.1) = 100 x 0.55 x 0.9. You can get the answer from that point, but I just wanted you to see that the order does not matter. a x b = b x a
Kripp, great video, touched on stuff I hadn't thought about! Would love to hear your thoughts on the Monk Passive "Seize the Initiative -Your Armor is increased by 100% of your Dexterity." Seems strong? Thoughts?
Haha, I was randomly curious what the great minds thought of the early versions of Diablo so I clicked on this without looking too close - who knew I'd find Kripp, who I know from many Hearthstone vids :) I forgot back in the day there was no smart loot so you might actually consider other primary stats in your build. At reeally high levels I guess you might still do that with augmentation, but I never worry about that in seasons.
one more question: Kripp what kind of glasses do you use ? Do you use Gunnar glasses or some kind of optic glasses? I am asking because your glasses looks awesome :) I want to buy one myself !
BlackSphinxGG is right though: if armor has a constant value in terms of effective HP, there is no diminishing returns involved. You are correct that the alternative stat becomes more advantageous, but this simply is not diminishing returns technically speaking.
You do know that when Kripparrian and Athene talked over skype Athene was asking alot of questions because he was blown away by the knowledge Kripparrian had?
Was worried that my DH would get owned by magic missiles but since they are dodgeable also that it's a big relief, thanks, was seriously considering taking another char just because of that
Not sure if anyone's mentioned this to you or not, but it appears that the higher level you are, the more life each point of vit gives. I can't seem to find any mention of it anywhere, but I noticed it last night on my character screen.
I hope this hasn't been answered already but I was curious how % reduction from armor and % reduction from resist combine? Do they stack? Do they get put in to another formula and are combined some other way? Thanks for any replies.
since armor and resist mitigate damage the same way, does that mean for wizzard and witch doctors, there is absolutely no point in having any strength gear?
Kripp are you wearing Gunnar glasses? I have been considering getting them for quite a while and wasn't sure whether they actually do anything or not Your thoughts would be appreciated!
So some questions coming from this video: Do armour and Physical resist stack to reduce all non-magic damage, or is there a type of spell that does physical magic damage? If i had 8k Dex, do I get 100% dodge chance, if all sum of all the brackets adds up to 100%?
Kripp - One guy you should try to get a hold of or team up with is Thott from Afterlife, he built thottbot and had INSANE calculations for Diablo 2 on drop rates etc... could be beneficial for you to chat with. He was you, but in Everquest :) Their guild was the same caliber as you guys, but only in EQ.. world firsts and all that jazz
Hey Kripparian, can I ask you how can you get 98% of dmg reduction, is the formula in absolute terms or in relative terms (percentage)? I guess it makes more logic to be in relative terms. And one more question, don't you think that this makes the barb absolutely overpowered?
Kripp, I'm a new player to Diablo - I've never played before, but I plan on playing now. I'm getting Diablo III on release, and I'm planning on buying D1 and D2 during the summer. I've played a bit in the beta, so I have a bit of experience, but I'm wondering what's the easiest way to learn how to gear my character. After watching this, I'm still confused about what stats to choose. I plan on playing a Barb most of the time. Are there any more tips you can give? Thanks! - Rev
so this is all good and dandy, but you cant pick attribute points, they are automatically mapped per character so it kind of all happens for you. Right?
So if 1 strength= 1 defense (which applies to all forms of damage) and 1 intelligence = .1 resist (which applies to all magic and physical and therefore improves all form of damage), doesn't that mean that strength is 10x better for reducing damage then intelligence?
I don't get the part about int and res. Lets say I have 500 res 1000 int, there are 3 formulas according to which: 500/(500+5*60lvl)=0,625 -> 62,5% dr from res 1000/(1000+50*60lvl)=0,25 -> 25% dr from int Then if I put effective int value: (1000int+500res*10)/((1000int+500res*10)+50*60lvl)=0,67 -> 67% So which of 3 values is used to calculate incoming damage?
Okay I'm still having a bit of trouble understanding, which is horrible since I'm majoring in mathematics haha. So say an enemy would deal 100 damage, but you have 45% reduction from strength/armor and 10% reduction from INT/resist. What would the total damage done to your character be? Would you add 45% to 10%, making it 55%, multiply that by 100 damage to get 45?
Alright that makes sense. Don't know why I had so much trouble understanding that originally haha. Good luck getting first Inferno clear. You guys have it on lock in my opinion.
Im taking algebra 2, pre-calculus, chemistry, and apparently diablo 3.
good one dude
8 year ago comment and that was pretty smooth

Everything I needed to know from this video:
"Armor is kickass."
I would never come up with this on my own, very nice video.
This really gives me the motivation to go play Diablo 3. And when I need help with a certain aspect of the game I will definetly find it on your channel.

I just started playing. I’ve got a good thing going with my game, and you just helped out so much. Thank you
Kripp, thank you for these videos. It's like I'm back at University learning about my favorite subjects. Best D3 info out there man.
Nice job on the videos Kripp! I really like that you made several videos before the Beta ended so that you could post videos when beta was taken down. Tuesday is soon upon us, my friend.
man the joy when you uploaded a new vid is priceless
You just earned yourself a new subscriber my friend. One of the best and informative D3 videos I have watched in a while.

Nice, thanks for the video it helped clear up some questions that nobody seems to be able to answer... just got my 3rd level 60, thank you again keep it up hope to see more later
kripp was so excited about d3 back in may 2012
man i always end up having to watch his vids like 5 times to get it
Kripp, I thought you couldn't put in attribute points in D3, or are you talking about gear?
Exceptionally well explained! I understood the mechanics first time i watched this vid :)
I will be honest, not a super math whiz so some of this flew over my head. But you had a likability and relatability that kept me listening all the way through, and even if I am new to the game and not going to benefit from the over-all math component I still walked away feeling like I learned something. Seriously dude, thanks for all these videos, im playing barb and im sure im not alone when i say u made my life in D3 a ton easier lol.
This goes way beyond how far I can imagine.

Great vid! Really descriptive and clear. Thanks :) Based on this, I will re-evaluate my secondary stat choice, and instead balance two secondary stats for the sake of maintaining effective combat.
Great stuff Kripp, very informative, I've decided to make your channel my first subscription since RUclips launched. I've succumbed!
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM, xD lol
thanks for these videos kripp, i check your channel everyday for new content, makes the wait for may 15 go by a little quicker.
Video was made 8 years ago and I am still watching it to learn the stats
Subscribed, more pros need to share their knowledge like this guy.
UPS delivery estimate is today at noon. Since I am currently nocturnal it will probably have to be tomorrow around midnight or the next morning.
Not across the board. Things like + damage and % haste stat on weapons will only apply to that one weapon when dual wielding.
Technically, its not diminishing return. However, you are right that spending points on the other stats provide better value. Think of it as trying to make a rectangle with the largest area with a limited width and height. really informative, I wish more people would explain the math behind Diablo3
lol, you just answered my question in the last 30sec of the video, should have finished watching lol. great job on the informative videos :)

Very good guide! keep these coming bro

Subbed thanks to this video. Would love to see more of this.

awesone vid kripp, knew all that stuff exept the dodge % increase, good to know. xD
Great stuff man! Keep up the good work!
You made me a subscriber for life with this video
@Kripparrian I think you may have misrepresented the diminishing returns on armor.
One thing you have to think of is say you have 90% resist from armor and go to 95% then you effectively halved the damage you till take; now 100 dmg does 5 dmg to you instead of 10.
The decision will be between STR and VIT, and can be summed so:
EHP = HP*((100/(100-(Armor/(Armor+(50*Clvl)))))*(100/(100-(INT/(INT+(50*Clvl))))))
if they have the same armor from gear, and neither get defensive skills -- yes
jus started playin diablo. im playing monk lvl55. hes always got low intelligence, is that bad?
get a high number of one type of resist (ligthening for instance) and use the passive that makes your highest resist into all resist
damage reduction via skills or passive or something.
You just got yourself a subscriber, mister.
I should be getting mine in the next few hours. Sweet! Are you going to stream soon?
If int and str provide same defense. Will wizards be as tanky as barbs? minus the vitality.
INTELLIGENCE, dude.. INTELLIGENCE.

BlackSphinxGG is right though: if armor has a constant value in terms of effective HP, there is no diminishing returns involved. You are correct that the alternative stat becomes more advantageous, but this simply is not diminishing returns technically speaking.
does this mean that int classes have a defensive edge compared to barbs, not counting 30% passive melee reduction and skills/runes
You do know that when Kripparrian and Athene talked over skype Athene was asking alot of questions because he was blown away by the knowledge Kripparrian had?
I love this guy. It's informative and amusing!
Was worried that my DH would get owned by magic missiles but since they are dodgeable also that it's a big relief, thanks, was seriously considering taking another char just because of that
great video... glad you took the time to figure this out
would dodge be more useful at higher difficulty levels as its not based on attacker level?
Not sure if anyone's mentioned this to you or not, but it appears that the higher level you are, the more life each point of vit gives. I can't seem to find any mention of it anywhere, but I noticed it last night on my character screen.
I hope this hasn't been answered already but I was curious how % reduction from armor and % reduction from resist combine? Do they stack? Do they get put in to another formula and are combined some other way? Thanks for any replies.
i rly like how you do your vids glad i subbed
since armor and resist mitigate damage the same way, does that mean for wizzard and witch doctors, there is absolutely no point in having any strength gear?
Question: does the final damage calculate as Damage*(1-reduction from armor)*(1-reduction from resistances) ? I guess so.
Hey Kripp i've got a question for you. Wich class would you play when D3 came out?
Kripp are you wearing Gunnar glasses? I have been considering getting them for quite a while and wasn't sure whether they actually do anything or not
Your thoughts would be appreciated!
So some questions coming from this video: Do armour and Physical resist stack to reduce all non-magic damage, or is there a type of spell that does physical magic damage? If i had 8k Dex, do I get 100% dodge chance, if all sum of all the brackets adds up to 100%?
so as a barb, we should use caster gear that has all resist and a little strength? and get a high dmg weapon which also has high int ?
Kripp - One guy you should try to get a hold of or team up with is Thott from Afterlife, he built thottbot and had INSANE calculations for Diablo 2 on drop rates etc... could be beneficial for you to chat with. He was you, but in Everquest :) Their guild was the same caliber as you guys, but only in EQ.. world firsts and all that jazz
Hey Kripparian, can I ask you how can you get 98% of dmg reduction, is the formula in absolute terms or in relative terms (percentage)? I guess it makes more logic to be in relative terms.
And one more question, don't you think that this makes the barb absolutely overpowered?
the game isn't even out but you fucking figured it out man!
How do the two types of damage reduction apply to each-other? does one come first and then the other is applied to the remaining damage?
so this is all good and dandy, but you cant pick attribute points, they are automatically mapped per character so it kind of all happens for you.
Lets say I have 500 res 1000 int, there are 3 formulas according to which:
500/(500+5*60lvl)=0,625 -> 62,5% dr from res
1000/(1000+50*60lvl)=0,25 -> 25% dr from int
Then if I put effective int value:
(1000int+500res*10)/((1000int+500res*10)+50*60lvl)=0,67 -> 67%
So which of 3 values is used to calculate incoming damage?
Kripp, how do you think solo xp will compare to a duo (w/2 hirelings) and a quad group aslong as you work well together.
You guys have it on lock in my opinion.
they modify the damage by their absorption. Since its a product, the order does not matter
