Update from me - I managed today to install my camera. The problem was not with the video source in the media, but in a wrong connected cable. Good job @The Fitting Bay !
I have been searching for weeks on how to hot wire my lancer camera and you came through for alot of people...you showed us step by step....thanks alot and keep up the good work.
I'm very surprised, after the many decades of aftermarket stereos being sold, that there isn't an aftermarket/oem plug standard so that you can just remove the old radio and plug everything into the new one, retaining your steering wheel controls, original backup camera and everything else without having to cut and strip wires, look up color codes for the wires for your particular vehicle and so on. Luckily there are companies like Metra that do make some of this kind of stuff to bridge oem plugs with aftermarket stuff.
Alternative approach: In another related video, they simply probed the radio connector (while connected to the powered-on factory radio) and looked for the wire with the 6 V level (while in reverse), which is only used for camera power, i.e. if it's 6V then it's gotta be camera power. The video signal wire would usually be near the 6V wire. Again, using some kind of video monitor, probe around until the monitor shows the backup camera picture. You could use any old monitor with an RCA video input, and there are also 3.5" TFT monitors on sale in the usual places for $30 or so. Although the front-to-back continuity approach is foolproof and guaranteed to work, the probing-around approach eliminates the pain of removing the back panels. Lastly, probe around for the 12 V level which comes on when in reverse, this will be your trigger signal for the aftermarket radio. To be sure, the continuity approach is guaranteed to work, but it's a little more labour intensive. Thanks mate for your video though, good on ya!
Can you do the same just on the camera, saying that your vehicle wasn't wired for a reverse camera but some how you now have a factory oem camera .can I get that power and power reducer from the reverse light?
Thanks for the video. I have been looking for directions to hardwire my OEM reverse camera to my 08 sequoia for an aftermarket stereo. I hope I can figure out the appropriate wires from this video.
This is a nice video, I got me an OEM camera that I got included in a trunk that I got for my 08 Lancer, but my car wasn't wired for reverse camera, I was hoping you have a video on how to do it just in the trunk, I could imagine that you would use the reverse light power to power up the camera from there and also add the rca cable to the camera from there since I do have an aftermarket stereo, I don't mind running cables to the front just hoping you have a video like that would be much appreciated. Thanks and sorry if I didn't make any sense Update 12-1-2021 So Like I said before I installed the Evo X lid with the camera and I was surprised that your method worked, The only difference was that I had to send my own wires from the trunk to the new Stereo I did my wiring the same way you did, I know its not the exact same method but pretty close. Thanks
If the back camera triggering voltage supply connects directly to the oem headunit harness brown wire then why need to add a voltage reducer if it has already 6v supply on it when reverse is triggered.. why not make direct supply connection from the harness wire to rca video input of the new aftermarket HU
Hi, great video. I’m trying to connect my OEM reversing camera (VW 2014 Scirocco 2.0L TDI, UK) to an aftermarket android head unit with no luck. I bought an A0580 decoder box. It has a yellow rca and three wires, yellow, brown and red. They plug into the head unit but still no video feed. Just wondering if there should be 6volts or 12volts going to the camera? Voltage from the decoder box, brown and yellow wires is 10.5volts so I’m confused. I’m guessing the decoder box just tries to reroute wires rather than change the video standard. I have tried selecting PAL video standard but still no joy. Any ideas appreciated. Should I just dump to decoder box and try to hardwire the camera to the head unit? I’m not sure what I’m trying to achieve is to change OEM camera standard, whatever that is, to RCA or reroute the wiring, or both? Thanks
Hey mate. Thank you for the info. I’m trying to install an after market head unit to a 2017 Hyundai i30 I have found the reverse wire from the head unit and the original car wiring and the works but I’m getting no video from the camera. The original wiring harness had 4 wires for the camera it has video and ground and power and ground . I have connected the male RCA I bought to the video and ground but where do I wire the other video power and ground ?
I’m having to do this on a LWB Mercedes sprinter. I can’t get access to the camera wires at the back of the van as I have converted it to a Motorhome and it has a ceiling that has the wires behind it. I think all I can do is check the wires at the front by the new head unit? I’m a bit confused about “shield “ I assume that is ground or negative? Any help you can give would Best regards, appreciated.

Does the headunit know to show the reverse camera because the camera gets power ad triggers it, or it it is triggered by the actual 12V reverse circuit?
What if I already have 6 volts and the camera triggers in reverse but the only thing I need to do is add the RCA to plug in the new Android head unit. Factory plug I found the video + and video - wire (pin 7 and 8) continuity to the camera. Now splice the RCA and you have yellow, red, and a little shielding. Does the yellow connect to the video plus? And the red? What about the shield? Well in any case the video I get in like an old tv in 3 parts is it just a shielding problem?
Okay so I’m going to be attempting this on my car this weekend lemme get this correct. So I have the actual pin out of my vehicle Video signal connects to rca positive. Video signal ground connects to rca shield. Now video pos 12v is connected to 6v out pos I have a converter that has 4 wires pos and ground for out and pos and ground for in. Then.... 12v in connects to reverse/back up to head unit. Then shield for camera should be plugged into ground of 6v out. Now my question is this leaves me with the converter 12v ground not connected to anything what should I connect that to? The head units ground or should I connect shield and 6v out ground together with the 12v in ground and connect them all to the head unit ground?
Yep so do the 12v converter 12v+ and ground. Then use the 6v out for camera power and also ground. If it’s not working and you’ve checked all your connections. Change the 6v ground out to the camera to any other ground in the car . That’s what we did here and it worked :)
