the thing about the phalanx that they don't seem to get here in the game is the Spartans not only interlock the shields together but when it comes to using the spears only the ones at the very front of the phalanx are supposed to hold the spears to the side facing forward, all the Spartans behind the very front line in addition to interlocking their shields together are supposed to hold their spears up above their heads facing forward as well, this is because the idea is the enemy is first and foremost facing a wall of sharp spears as well as a shield wall, doing it that way made it where with very few exceptions such as the third day at the battle of Thermopylae the Spartans never lost a single soldier in battle using the phalanx.

rome 2's engine is janky for this anyway, rome 1 never had this problem and mods would fix the spear positioning
