Imagine if men and women could just be honest about liking each other and not need to hide it behind irony and jokes and bullshit :(
It's impossible in this world.
Truly, I think we as a society are so simultaneously repressed and oversexualized (both of which get reinforced by Hollywood's concepts of beauty) that we end up creating and then discussing the merits and drawbacks of categories like "rodent man" rather than people just... unabashedly liking what they like. Maybe I just feel particularly impatient with it all because I'm a lesbian and trying to divest of conventional concepts of attractiveness, but it just gets more and more bizarre to me as time goes on.
Divest from*, whoops 🫠
This is legitimately true!!! These categories most likely arose because people were like "this person is attractive to me but don't fit the current beauty standard," so a whole aesthetic has to be created in order to justify the "why he kinda...." attitude. I feel like in order to truly tackle the issue, we have to stop judging people's preferences (and faces) so hard as a society.
Like, I get why women would be more willing to distance themselves from what they like...but ultimately it's does no one any favors.
why is it so weird for people to just say they find someone attractive? why do we have to keep sorting people into different "types" of attractiveness? it's really strange tbh
because humans like to sort and classify things, and notice traits that group people together. Also online people have a lot of time to think
For sure lol I'm a 30 year old and it's so weird to me lol these are also grown men in their 30's and 40's and I don't think they would appreciate people calling them rodents.
@@princessslaya937 hot* rodents! most of them that have been questioned laugh it off and say they're happy to be considered hot, like Jeremy Allen. They're celebrities, I'm sure they've heard so much worse

Because they'll roast the hell out of you if you do 😂
To be honest, I think most people try not to talk about black people looks as animals because of the horrible history.
The first time I heard of rodent men without knowing the context, I thought, " it better not be a Jewish thing."
except that's exactly what it is lmao
@TheSmark666 yeah...kinda
At this point, it's better to avoid categorizing people's looks, especially regarding hair and nose.
TikTok is such shitshow.
The witch skull or princess skull thing was even worse. Overtly antisemitic.
Dude, seriously. First thought that came to mind was Dustin Hoffman in "Midnight Cowboy."
Some Black women are compared to pitbulls. Pitbull, rat, I don't see the compliment.
Nah people say whatever they want about black people 😂 aint nobody careful about a damn thing. ANd if they are its so they wont get in trouble not because they know its wrong
it’s just weird to me because I thought we’re not supposed to speak on peoples looks like this…I don’t think people realize that this can make the men insecure as well.
It's a free country. There's nothing wrong with discourse.
People just don't care. Whether they've been made insecure by men and want some kind of power back or they don't see it as a real thing to be insecure about because at the end of the day these men are attractive.
As a disabled guy who has always struggled with body image issues, I appreciate you saying this. It seems like every other form of discrimination is rightfully avoided except for physical appearance.
@@mewmew6158 totally agree, but that doesn't make it right.
I completely agree, I personally wouldn’t want to be compared to a dirty rat
The problem with this phenomenon started when it went from being a silly thing you joked about with your moots to literal publications in digital newspapers and articles like, once that line gets crossed everything turns to shit
I had not thought about this, but I think you are right, the "unconventionaly attractive" its just to say they are attractive but not exactly in the "Hollywood square faced masculine looking kinda attractive" that was kind of the norm.
I love tapping on a video essay that introduces me to internet concepts that don’t make it to my timeline. We live in different worlds
I can’t wait till we stop doing all of this… dogs, rats, cats why not stop. ?????
“You’re so roach-like! Not in a bad way but just how you persevere and survive the odds!!”
Ok, so my husband has long been compared to a mouse. Cracks me up that now he's "on trend".
You need to first qualify as “conventionally attractive” in order to be described as “unconventionally attractive”- that was such a lightbulb moment! Thank you for sharing your insight.
Benedict Cumberbatch comes to mind. He has often been told he looks like an otter
Let's not insult otters, they're cute 🥺
Or penglins
Pengin
Penguin
I think maybe it would be better to start saying “uniquely attractive” because sometimes those odd features are the thing that makes them really stand out
You only brought him up at the end but I've always been confused at how people act surprised by Pete Davidson's dating history. Outside of his face (for some) he ticks many conventional attractive boxes (6'4 heavily tattooed millionaire) and that's without taking his humor into account.
Plus everybody says he's well endowed
I don’t believe he was a millionaire or even all that rich pre dating Ariana. He was doing well in the comedy space but just barely getting scenes on SNL and really small roles in low budget streaming platform films. But he is definitely Ariana’s TYPE. From the momentum of that relationship he blew up, made a lot more money (and good for him, I’m not mad about that)
I think there's still some holdouts acting like tattoos make you look weird or lower your attractiveness, despite seemingly everyone and their grandmas having tattoos now.
My sister had a crush on Stuart Little tbh
THANK YOU for addressing this! I feel like I had to make excuses for “I’m not actually hot” but now it’s just “I have bigger problems than how hot I think others think I am”.
I don't think any of those guys look like rodents. Rishi Sunak, however, definitely looks like a lost cast member from Flushed Away.
I was reading an article on this and cringed. First woman being compared to pitbulls, then men to rats. There are other ways to compliment people!
Extraordinarily well-thought out and presented. Your analysis around race, weight, etc. hit the mark hard, and I concurred with every one of your assessments of who was outside the “rodent man” category and why. Some would call this a superficial subject and say you were overthinking, but for me it’s a deep, thinking-person’s dive. Thank you!
thank you!!!
Agree being compared to Stuart Little is a compliment
But sorry/ not sorry, it's not a compliment comparing someone to a rat in general. It's a backhanded one at best.

People on TikTok have discovered conventionally attractive white guys with one or two unique features
Tik Tok is a plague.
Yeah. These guys still have solid face shape and a full head of hair. The features are maybe funny but still symmetrical and not too obtrusive. It’s endearing because other things are right.
Anglo Saxon male privilege.
That exists but there is also, "Anglo Saxon female privilege". Ex. They don't go to jail. Rarely if ever for being a teacher preying on children or even capital crimes as we see with the Karen case.

Gen Z definitely invented liking raccoons, rats and possums
@@headerahelix I'm not saying no one's ever liked them before, but rather the stigma against them is more absent. Ask your parents what they think of these animals, and their answers will differ significantly from that of a random college student.

4:19 THIS IS CULTURAL STUDIES MATERIAL. The Internet worked hard on this
‘Stuart Little 2’ literally had a female character who was so in love with Stuart (and his family) that she gave up a career in crime working in a toxic environment

the male writers have a bad habit making female characters be interested weird characters but they seldom extend that grace to women who look weird.

@@cseptember6562imagine this was done for anyone who was black publicly, the backlash would be to much to bear for whoever makes the comparison so it won’t be done unless someone is looking for backlash or attention.
The western world is a society where it is unacceptable to compare minorities to animals literally, for better or worse depending on your own opinions and beliefs
@@gabrieledwards4794 There would be no backlash for women saying that they find unconventionally attractive black men attractive. I am black and I wouldnt care.
And there are other groups of people. This doesnt exist for asian or hispanic/latino men either and I doubt there would be backlash for them.
Backlash isnt the reason. They just love white men lol. No matter how mediocre they look
As a black “rodent” man, I want my love too!
This isnt for us bro. Theres a reason why all this type of stuff only included white men and no other race
These men are handsome just regular handsome looking men. idk why people are calling them rodent men. It's a bit offensive. The internet is wild.

It’s how I can imagine myself being a man hearing this and being like « wtf are these internet ppl talking about ?»
Great video! Surprised you didn’t mention Natalie Dormer in the rat women section. She’s conventionally attractive but has big rodent energy.
I can't deal with you rejecting people from being hot rodent boyfriends and the wild comparisons you're making instead 🤣
“caveman hot” took me out 😭😭😭 but i can see it
The fact that there all comparisons made in this discourse, minus Kendrick Lamar, makes it even more absurdly funny.
I could never be a celebrity. People are so mean 😂 Why can't we just say handsome.
Wow I’m early af 😂
i find this really infuriating with how women view men. like just admit someone is attractive. I hate men for constantly wanting to rank women by number. idk, just like find the beauty and the attraction in people or just be polite.
There is way to much emphasis on looks in society. You can find people attractive based on all sorts of things, not just looks. Also I think the internet gives a scewed version of reality. I live in a majority white country, am darker skintoned and overweight but with a smaller waist and big bust. A lot of people compliment me from diffrent backgrounds. Not just guys, the kids at the school I work or other women to. I think being being attracted to people can differ from "being attractive" because as cliché as it sounds... It really is about the whole package. I think people are surprised if they find somebody attractive that the media hasn't told they should find attractive. Tbh a lot of the guys you showed didn't seem attractive to me. Kendrick actually looked better then most of them 😅. But i guess in mainstream American media; white and skinny is still right. Thank goodness for the internet. I watch a lot of diffrent people and seeing all that diversity does really help for confidence for me personally. At the end of the day we are all people and everybody wants to be threated nice regardless of how you look. So I like to threat everybody with the same kindness regardless of their look because I hope the would do that for me to.
Love your videos ❤.
Oh man if some categories like this existed about women.. Jeezzzusss it would be wild news😂
I haven't seen that show you mentioned, and I agree that based on that screenshot you posted Lena's character looked fine, but it might be worth pointing out Lena Dunham is a very controversial figure to a lot of people, so I wouldn't be surprised if that's where the well of criticism was coming from.
Edit: Although, to steelman the point, a lot of people who want to degrade a slightly larger woman will often salivate when a justified reason to dislike them comes out, so they can continue bashing on that person and claim it's because of the bad thing they did, not because they're not thin/white/wearing makeup/whatever. See: Lizzo
It only works for men
If Mike Faist and Josh O’Connor are considered ‘rodent men’ i have no fucking idea what attractive is anymore? How much of a perfectly sculpted Greek-god statue do i have to be to be considered ‘conventionally attractive’? Wtf is that. No idea how talking about someone like that allowed on mainstream media, also that its ok becuz they’re dudes is a bit sad, i mean those newscasters need to preach some equal respect here
I hear what you're saying about how these "rat man" are often white guys, but imo I think part of it for guys of color could be that comparing not white guys to animals historically gets really dicey really fast (From white people's pov). If I saw a non white dude who I thought fit the "rat man" aesthetic, I still probably wouldn't call him that in an effort to avoid a conversation about what exactly I mean by that. But I am a white dude so.
Edit: Whoop. You said that right after I made my comment. My fault for not watching the whole video before commenting.
18:18 correct
NOT A SINGLE BLACK MAN WAS REFERENCED THAT DAY LOL
This is insane
This makes me uncomfortable because as you said, “unconventionally attractive” is really only focused on white men, and everyone else just kinda is hot or not. Both women and people of color are not the topic of conversation.
It’s just like, somehow, calling a white man a rat is now a compliment?
Hiiiiii
I completely agree, and whilst I think it's an overused term, I do think the 'female gaze' or simply the appeal of men with just enough feminine qualities, plays a huge part in the rodent trend, take the Challenegrs leads for example. In general the film objectifies them more compared to the female characer, with their masculinity constantly being questioned. Art especially exhibits alot of vunerability and sensitivity, notably at the hands of a dominating women, which definitely plays a part on why the internet became so obsessed with his character. This even follows through with the actors' themeselves. People have expressed a massive love for Josh O'Connor, purely because he comes off as quite literally adorable, he's this incredibly sweet and non threatening guy, making him more appealing to lots of women, plus he is clearly talented actor. Whilst Mike Faist can come off as much more saracstic amd intense, even seeming like the more 'masculine' one of the duo, his extensive theatre background definitely shuts this down. Very so, he has gained plenty of fans through his vocals and that fact that he is actually quite a beautiful and talented dancer. Which is not often seen in alot of Hollywood men.
I cant stand timothee chalamet 🙄
Take a shot every time you hear unconventionally attractive.
Might as well just pull out the calipers if this is how we're gonna talk about beauty.
If you’ve ever had a rat as a pet, you will understand.
Isn't a comparison like this what roseanne did?
k-dot is a gorgeous man. The way he moves is dripping with honesty. when I look at drake, I see his build , height , and face and it technically looks good but the energy behind it. The way drake moves literally and personality wise is unattractive. He has the Scorpio energy not that really matters, but that energy is about emotion, magnetism, influence, power etc. The way he wields his personal power is unattractive to those who wish to be healthy and honest .
I was gonna say, the search photos felt like they were gaslighting me because I wanted to say "Hold up, isn't K gorgeous?"
I'm starting to think that beauty is in the eye of the beholder 🤔 idk just spitballing here.

Liiiisten, I know this is supposed to be complimentary but like... it's giving double-standards as far as the discourse is concerned. If men *publicly* discussed women like this, it wouldn't be content like this. Not to exonerate men's discourse about women's body, it's still fucked up... but come on...
That's because the discourse around women is either you're hot or not. Whereas guys can have different distinctions of hot
@@athenajaxon2397 lol Trust me guys know the difference between the type of hot that young Shelley Duvall vs. Zoey Deschanel is. Lol.
