I put on a set of ex 471 laced to i9 torch hubs 9 years ago and they are flawless on a trek slash 27.5. They have done everything from climbing to park days. Not one complaint.
I built up my own 32 hole ex471 a couple years ago. I've beat the tar out of them for years now. 2.3 to 2.5...You're talking like 3mm. Not many people are going to notice that. I've run both. PNW riding. Love them. 👍
Great info! Definitely helps me researching building a wheelset for the first time! I was looking at the XR 391 (the XC model rim), but i was wondering if i should go with a beefier EX 471 rim instead. Want to pair it with the OneUp hubs and some 2.0" tires. Seems like the XR 391 introduces some nonsense with the nipples to reduce weight, not sure it it would be problematic as I'm not knowledgeable enough to understand.
@@teecee4459 if you don’t mind the weight the 471 is excellent and very strong. If its gonna be overkill you could just run it on the rear and run the xr391 up front

Haven't tried the EX471, but I ran a 511 for about a year with little problems, then the spokehole cracked and the rim got somehow deformed, replaced with a Newmen E.G 30, seems promising.

A friend had a similar spoke hole failure on an ex511. Maybe they dropped their manufacturing standards a little and this is the result? I haven’t heard of the Newmen E.G 30 before
I run a 471 on a hope hub on the back of my Bronson. My mate has just offered me a set of SC Reserve wheels on chris King hubs for £750 and he will warranty any rim failures etc. The Reserves on chris king are brilliant wheels, but the 471 has never let me down. I have a 29er as well, but the intention is to go mullet in 3 years time, so the 27.5 rear with a lifetime warranty would come into play then. Not sure if I am going to kick my self if I dont buy the fancy wheels.
Wow man I still got those 29mm bontrager rims and I can feel tire squirm with 2.6 I even got the bead off the rim and blew sealant I have been thinking of going to a 32mm rim. I am keep my bontrager hub at 54t more then enough for me Cheers

@@wildman9364 I’m not sure if they necessarily roll slower. I think they increase the ride comfort but decrease in capability at speed. Not everyone is trying to ride silly speeds down hills though so they certainly have their spot. Comfort is a priority for many
My FR560 custom-built rear is two months old, retrued and retensioned several times, dinged up and won't hold tubeless either. I'm going to black crow carbon. Their warranty is sick. Basically buy the wheel once and thats it. Just pay for builds everytime after that you wreck it.
Interesting... Any plans to run a 2.4wt Dissector or DHR II or a 2.4 HR II to compare the squirm with the Aggressor? Been running a 2.4" Hellcat Pro (AEC) for winter and has been great - casing a pretty tough but not too heavy - it's getting shredded in the dry now. I used some 3-in-1 oil on my freewheel, setup with the 6pawls/108t, seems better than when it was 54t (in terms of the odd bang-slippage) Not impressed I had to replace the rear wheel bearing already - but was cheap enough, and has some good one in there now.
Nah I won’t run another dissector, and the DHR2 is a maybe, but they wear way too fast for my liking. I hear the Hellcat goes alright, when I see one at a local shop I’ll grab it and give them a crack

Keep in mind Maxxis tyres will squirm alot more than a a Michelin tyre for example, due to lack of support ton side knobs, the sid eknobd squirm å lot more, I found the Michelin Wild Enduro 2.40 to perform really good on a 23mm rim, alot less squirm than Maxxis 2.30 so track stands got much easier, and really great on 30mm rims, it cornered smoother, even fakies got smoother. I am impressed. So I will be sticking with this setup for a awhile, I've not tried 25mm yet. I have FR560 front, H552 rear. I got it second hand, I jumped on it when I got the offer. I see Schwalbe and few others also offer tyres with supportive side knobs, but I've not tried these, but for some reason Maxxis keeps insisting on worse side knobs, not super bad but not optimal, so I won't switch back to Maxxis, the side knobs make a huge difference.
The supportive side knobs are a little choppy and loose in dry corners compared to say a dhf maxx grip side knob. Though they do excell in soft dirt and become superior in that scenario. For me I prefer the compliant knobs and an appropriate rim with for the tyre
@@mtbtelly5522 I also love how the tyre transitions adn rolls, and rides in general, I noticed it rolled better than high roller2 not massive difference but notocible, the tyre is very stable turning and cornering, good thread pattern i think. But Maxxis is not the worst, I've tried bobytager se04 team issue some years ago, it mad eme crash, cus it lost grip, not good for leaning bike over on dirt, but Maxxis high roller 2 did this well, but not as good for track stands, wild Enduro shines there.

It doesn’t bother me at all. The Aggressor is quite easy rolling and I prefer to protect my wheels so cushcore is a must. I just get afterit and don’t think about the weight

The 2.3 aggressor is not nearly as confident as the 2.5. I’ve only ridden the 2.3 once and it lacked the grip and confidence the 2.5 has. And the 2.5 Aggressor is a big improvement over the Dissector so you should enjoy that change

Nah it was ok, just gotta set both beads properly before starting the install. Would’ve been a fight if I couldn’t get the far bead to hold in place. I set the tyre up on the rim, then pop one bead and open it up, with the other bead still completely in place I just feed the cushcore in and refit the near bead into the rim
@@mtbtelly5522 to install cushcore on my Bontrager carbon rims that come with the slash the shop need 2 blokes to get the true on over it … and 3 sets of leavers 😂 DD aggressors don’t like to stretch .
@@midlifesendermtb2178 oh christ thats an effort. The bontrager alloy rims have the stupid rim strip to create a tubeless seal instead of rim tape. Which makes putting tyres on a pain because theres no real low point in the middle of the rim to push the bead into. I assume the carbons run the same strip. I pull that strip out straight away and tape the bontrager rims just to give me space to get tyres on easily
@@mtbtelly5522 yep I pulled the tape out aswel… my DMAX Mavic Pros have the same strip..but a lot easier to fit… there the rims I’m running atm… there a half kilo each lighter than the carbon rims with tyres on…but the Bontrager carbon rims are tuff AF… I thinking about putting them on my DH bike.. but think I’d had to change out hubs..
What oil do you use? And do you know if you can do this with the new SLX stuff? As my SLX hub has a very inconsistent clicking sound to it and I just freshly greased it and after 2 runs it went back to being inconsistent
I’m not sure whats going on with these new shimano hubs, but they seem problematic. I’d have to open one up and get my head around it to know whats happening. As for oil I been using the same oil I run in my cars. ULX110 10w30. But I guess any quality thin motor oil should be ok
Unfortunately, I have some experience with these hubs. They are quite complex and hard to maintain correctly. Shimano's manual will show you how to maintain it (see pgs 14 and 25 particularly): si.shimano.com/api/publish/storage/pdf/en/dm/MAHB001/DM-MAHB001-09-ENG.pdf FYI, make sure that you DO NOT get oil, grease, or any lubricant inside the freehub body -- it will destroy the clutch mechanism very quickly (see pg 14). However, you DO need to lubricate the outside portion of the freehub body to keep it working properly (see pg 25). Just be careful not to over do it, as the lubricated and non-lubricated parts are adjacent. I've had success using a small amount of Polylube 1000. It seems to stay where it is applied. This is the grease the manual calls for: www.amazon.com/Shimano-Freehub-Body-Grease-50g/dp/B002P8IAHA Also, in my experience, it is smart to get a backup freehub body just incase one stops working properly. Hey mate can please do a video on, How you “car park set up” a bike to get it as close as possible before you start doing testing laps to fine tune it. I’m on the Norco sight a2 with new 2021 x2 and 36 Rythm and started with the ride aligned app and have adjusted from there.. I’m struggling to get that buttery fluttery feeling over chop. I’m other getting harsh feelings if I go stiffer or it feels soggy feelings if I go softer. I’m Struggling to find a sweet spot. And currently dealing with it being alittle harsh. So I want to start from scratch with a new approach… Help! Cheers chad.

the nukeproof horizon v2's: super cheap, wide at 30ID and super strong. Good bang and alternative for DT
I borrowed a friends Ebike with the Horizon V2 wheels, the hubs seemed good but I dented the back wheel on the first lap haha
I’ve had both and killed them, on the raceface arc heavy duty and I’m very impressed. No damage and they’ve been hammered

Yeah I reckon the FR560 feels noticeably stronger so I’d go with that for sure

How are you finding the weight with a DD tire and cushcore in there?

I’ve had all of these rims and destroyed them all. The hope fortus 30 are bombproof a bit heavier but so well built. My go to for now

How did you go fitting cushcore to a 25 mill rim… that would have been hell lol.

The rim edges bent super easily on mine, even with rimpact and dh casing. Bent 4 halo vortex rims before I bought ex511's. So much better.
