I will talk about a function generator, a summing amplifier, voltage controlled oscillators and a 555 timer circuit before I will build the open source Arduino pedalShield project in order to create some proper guitar effects. Let's get started!

    for acoustic guitars, it's really creative if you could apply a reverb effect. It's the most difficult effect to simulate. Analog circuits would wither use springs or bucket brigade circuits, but digital techniques are also difficult since a lot of code is involved.

    7:30 I think that Just lowering the volume of the guitar or attenuating the output a little would solve the problem, it sounds interesting really wanted to hear it not clipping.

    • @schefre35
      @schefre35 3 года назад

      It’s not clipping, it’s frequency modulating the signal onto a square wave. That’s why it sounds so strange. But even if you were to change the waveform it wouldn’t sound significantly different than before.

    • @geovani60624
      @geovani60624 3 года назад

      @@schefre35 I noticed when he played lighter it sounded right, but with a warmer signal in the chords the signal got all mangled, I still believe that if he started with a clean atenuated signal and amplified it in the output it would sound better, or maybe cut half of the wave would help too

    • @schefre35
      @schefre35 3 года назад

      AmazinChannel That’s how frequency modulation works, he didn’t play anything in the beginning (for a fraction of a second), and that’s why we could hear a (somewhat) pleasant tone.

    • @geovani60624
      @geovani60624 3 года назад

      @@schefre35 2 different notes? If it was Just one I would agree with you but no, when he gets to the higher notes it mangles, that's why I sugested a flip flop to lower the guitar frequency so the modulator has more time to work, or simply work with half a wave.

    I built the Arduino Mega version of that effects pedal. It was then I realized that the 5 ultra-cheap Chinese Mega clones ($12) I bought had absolutely zero analog side capacitors for filtering. Needless to say the noise of this solution was more than I could tolerate. I expect a genuine Arduino Mega would have sounded much better. Even with the Mega's extra memory (8KB) over the Nano you used the amount of memory is a really a serious limitation for any type of reverb/echo effects. It is however fun to experiment so I don't regret the time I spent building the effects pedal.

      as for building a synth pedal in particular, i'd recommend starting with a PLL based design like the schumann multiplier divider and adding stuff like an envelope filter, a binary counter-based octaver, using a re-triggered 555 to do PWM waveforms, ect. in the world of guitar pedals it's more common to use parts of existing designs and mash them together than to create a design from complete scratch.

    Awesome video. Well done.

    well the analog was fail because you wanted to mix 2 signals instead of modulating the input signal, indeed the signal should be an mix of modulation and input signal, if you look at any modules you got "wet" and "dry" signal which you add both of them and you modify amplitude, volume and frequency of it, plus if you looking for reverb, you need some sort of storage for the signal to be repeated.

    That Tremelo could be done with a simple light sensitive diode and NE555 with some smoothing caps on its output to round the shape. Of create a simple single transistor oscillator.

    I think you should revisit failures 2 and 3; you may have been closer to success than you realize. The output sounded overmodulated and/or clipped. Try dialing back intermediate amplitudes to stay within range of downstream components.

    I suggest you look into videos on Native Instruments Reaktor. It's basically a fully modular software synth, but from your point of view it is more like electrics simulator. Oscillators, filters and all that, but virtually. You can use that to inspire yourself what to build.

    U could use DAW (digital audio workstation) like
    Fl studio
    Ableton are all daws
    It has many plugins such as synthesizer etc.

    "that unlike my attempts, do not suck"
    I can definitely relate there. a hundred failures for a single success. lol

    Just an idea here:
    Get the input from guitar to convert the frequency of the note to a certain amount of voltage in a rate of 1v/octave (this is like a standard in modular analog synths) and then feed the pin 1 of signal generator. The output of generator will feed a VCA (Made with a transconductance OpAmp like CA3080) The guitar input signal envelope will control the gain of VCA. The output can be mixed with the original signal or still pass through a VCF.

    That's the first time I ever got to actually see you. I thought you were a bit older based on your knowledge. You blow me away with your knowledge of electronics, you really do. How old were you when you bought your first oscilloscope, ...6? Cool vid, thanks. Can you run a microphone through it?

    A really good approach in fail and success! If you want more, perhaps you try out a midi interface for your guitar and feed it to LMMS? It was great fun with my epiano but should work with guitars as well.
