This was a hell of a twist to learn the Astronaut was an alternate version of Walter full of regret for wishing Danny wasn't around anymore, after he had been so frustrated at him and blaming him for their parents' divorce as well as Danny cheating in the game too.
Well from a certain point of view it’s apart of a paradox that kept repeating and continuing until the past variant of Walter altered the events that previously occurred restoring adult Walter’s variant of Danny reinitializing the cosmic balance.
@@DirectorOfTheMultiverse So true like how in Jumanji that after the game was won, Alan and Sarah got sent back to the past and fixed things in many ways,
I knew it from the start when the astronaut said (what I initially thought was), “Dude, you’re me.”
It's amazing to see how future Walter after realising his mistake came back 15 years through worm hole to prevent his younger self from wiping away danny's existence and succeeded on such a beautiful moment
If anyone is wondering what happened to the astronaut and the alternate Danny after they disappeared, well the movie doesn’t cover that but we can guess. One theory is that after merging their consciousness merged into their younger self to become the same person so that they will live the same life as them. Or we can speculate that the game sent them back home to their own timeline once they disappeared.
Believe it or not there was a lot of hints the astronaut was Walter:
He had a fleet Admiral card, but that was obvious in retrospect. Good on the writers to making us assume he was just a stranded player like Jumanji.
His mannerisms were similar to Walter. They rolled their eyes the same way, same type of sarcasm,etc.
Lisa felt safe around him because she subconsciously knew who he was. (ignore her outburst about wanting to unknowingly bed her own brother).
He was protective of Lisa during the Zorgon boarding knowing who she was.
Constant knowledge of the game and functions.
Knew the layout of the house without asking.
We lost my brother to depression years ago, then this comes on TV a week later.

Young Walter learnt how horrible of a person he was when he realized that older Walter wished his brother wasn't born lol

I remember seeing this in theaters and being completely blown away by the twist. And also, why do I hear Yoda's theme in this scene?!

I feel like the Lego Movie 2 got some inspiration from Zathura...or is it just me? The boy's future self and the space-themed advanture etc.
Walter from an alternate timeline decided to wish his brother out of existence and he felt horrible because the game wouldn't let him continue moving, leading him to travel through the galaxy for 15 years. As an astronaut, he went back in time where he can return to the house and stop his past self from making the same mistake

Ya know I thought about what Lisa said before the 👨🏼🚀 faded into Walter as soon as we found out who the 🧑🏼🚀was. I was thinking *wait didn't Lisa say something about?* 😂😂😂😂😂

This Astronaut's story closely mimics that of Emperor Zurg (the future Buzz Lightyear) from the Lightyear movie:
Even the astronaut (future Walter) reached space with the help of the game as well. He and his brothers did not respect each other as heroes. Walter was angry about why Danny was so annoying all the time and when he possibly cheated too but somehow Walter still got away with it and he continued the game and got the wishing star card and wished his brother hadn't existed but not in the way that his brother had never even been born (then the game would never have been started and Walter would have thus perhaps created a time paradox in this way which would have therefore taken him back to Earth) but in such a way that his brother would just disappear into non-existence.
After that he was sorry and he couldn't continue the game and he was trapped in space and somehow he survived in space, the house probably drifted in space and Walter probably ended up in the Space Academy that was in the story of that game, almost like an alternative future imitating the future vision of the world in the 50s that young Walter wouldn't have recognized it himself, full of indescribable 50s sci-fi technology (i.e. the same as that robot was, it was a 50s sci-fi model) and after becoming 15 years older, having only eaten its food reserves (paste from a tube) at the space academy after completing astronaut training, after receiving the spacesuit, he realized that:
If we can use wormholes in sci-fi movies to move through time, why not the same in real life, whether it's going forward in time or going back, so he went through the time slot, that is, the wormhole when he arrived at that point in time, 15 years ago in the past to help his younger self and Danny get rid of the Zorgons and to correct his own mistake.
So, like Zurg-Buzz, the Astronaut broke time, and so what (just because of his presence) happened to young Walter never happened to the Astronaut. This moment in the movie was a new moment with never be lived. So they were able to change things.
So if the Astronaut could go back in time, he could stop his younger self from wishing Danny away, from continuing their bickering, so they could continue playing the game, progressing and thus making it home. And nothing like that happened.
And it worked out great. So this was a very similar event to the meeting between Buzz and his future self, and I wouldn't be at all surprised if this movie had served as an inspiration for that time travel and thus the birth of Emperor Zurg from the Lightyear movie.
you do know that this came out first before Lightyear right? so it's the other way around. it's Lightear Emperor Zurg that closely mimics this Astronaut's story, not Astronaut's story closely mimics Emperor Zurg
