  • Lucy Boynton and Kelvin Harris Jr. talk about bringing a true story of composer and violinist Joseph Bologne who defied odds and rose through the ranks of French society to the big screen. Harris says his father, who is a classical music teacher, helped him learn to play the violin. “We came up with a system, 5 months, 7 days a week, 6 hours a day,” he says.

I saw the movie last night and it is great! I wish it was part of a series of films...I'd like to know more about his life during the French Revolution and afterwards. Shame on Napoleon for trying to squelch his legacy!

I love the story! It looks incredible and beautifully done. I cannot wait to see this. Chevalier and his relationship with The Queen of France is remarkable. Look forward to also hearing some of his work that has never before been recorded.

Kelvin did a great portrayal of Joseph. I just wished the movie highlighted more of his life after the French Revolution. But still was an amazing movie.

I loved the movie and sadden by how another brillant person of color was erased from history for so many years. 😔. May this be the time going forward we can celebrate his life, his many talents, and contributions.

I wish they would have talked more about Joseph Bologne (Chevalier). He was a contemporary of Mozart and was called, until recently when it went out of fashion, 'The Black Mozart'. So much this interview missed. Another reason I don't miss TV. This was 'interview light' and dismissive of the character. The movie is about Chevalier, NOT Marie Antoinette. His music is on RUclips...wonderful.

TYPICAL of TODAY to divert focus from the LEAD actor and make the majority of vfc this farce about the lesser.
    I am being nice
TODAY has ALWAYS been and is RIDICULOUS!!!
The LEAD actor it BRILLIANT and this does NOT inspire someone to go and see his OUTSTANDING performance
It is OSCAR worthy but of course it will he ignored and it is yet another crumb.

Just read The New York Times review, written by Lisa Kennedy. Usually, The New York Times has no problem dropping the hammer on inferior filmmaking. Here, however, I suspect that The New York Times attempted to avoid being tagged "racist" by skirting journalistic responsibility. Nowhere does Lisa Kennedy critique the impossibilities and flaws in this film. For instance, during a musical "battle" with Mozart, the Guadeloupe born Frenchman, Joseph Bologne, breaks into a riff on American blues music, which wasn't invented for another 100 years in 1860. Chevalier is preposterous hyperbole, making the 1984 film, Amadeus, look like a Ken Burn's documentary. Chevalier's populism undermines Joseph Bologne's contribution to musical history. Hopefully, a better film will rise from the ashes of this drivel.
