The longevity that all these guys had is amazing!! Glavine, Smoltz, Maddux, and Johnson all pitched into their 40s and retired in the late 2000s and even then they were still solid pitchers, best era of baseball.
100%. And Spoiled enough to see the best player of all time then too; Bonds. Best pure contact hitters of all time Gwynn/Ichiro. And closers in Hoffman/Mariano. And the coolest player ever in Griffey. What an era
His FB had great intrinsic cut to it, but Maddox was also know for utilizing balls scuffed in play to get extra movement on his pitches. Nowadays pitchers get fresh baseballs so often you don't see that cartoonish run on sinkers as often.
This is one of the best docs MLB Network has ever made and that’s saying something. Going into why baseball is great the battle between the hitter and pitcher
National League pitchers were the best of the breed. They went up to plate and put the ball in play and took their chin music just like they delivered it!
The 90’s was the golden era of pitching for me. Maddux, Johnson, Pedro, and Clemens. Maddux was the greatest of the 4 by the slimmest of margins because he was the most consistently dominant. Johnson was better in his 30’s than in his 20’s because he became more of a pitcher with the slider. Pedro was utterly ridiculous and would’ve had better stats if he weren’t on the Expos for years. Clemens had the most devastating fastball of them all.
I'm regretting being too young to really appreciate those 90s braves.. especially mid to late 90s I wasn't a toddler.. I just mean, I would've had a lot more understanding of the actual magnificence on display, had I at least already played my hs years
Greg Maddux is the final boss of pitchers. he looks unassuming but he uses that perception against hitters like a ninja and they can’t believe what happened after they strike out.
Maddux wasn't a pitcher, he was a painter lol. The way he located, that 2 seamer the way it came back in towards lefty hitters low and inside corner, most hitters gave up a n that pitch. Amazing, as well back door with that 2 seamer toward righties just froze em, location, location location
Maddux, Randy, Kershaw and Clemens. They would be my starting line up, in no particular order…with Pedro waiting for someone to get in the I.L. I am 42 years old, so I’m talking about the pitchers I’ve seen pitched.
Don't forget Steve Avery early 90's. He was clutch during the playoffs. Give props to the World Series opponents because they had great pitchers as well during the playoffs and clutch hitters. The Dodgers winning 2 World Series in the 80's is nothing short but legendary due to the fact of having very limited talent in their squads.
@@jasonperkins1654 Catcher sets up a foot outside the plate. Maddux throws it straight in his glove. Catcher doesn't even try to make it look better because he knows he's going to get the call. The umpires of the time were giving Maddux a big strike zone off the outside of the plate for no reason, and very rarely did any of the commentators have the balls to call it for what it was. It's good they unwittingly included this pitch in the video as an example of his great control because he was getting a lot of strikes like this one.
@robertvere2263 like I said. Why throw a strike if you don't have to. That's what you do as a pitcher. Umpires these days are alot better about zones. Unless your name is Angel Hernandez
They had very different styles of pitching. Randy was the guy who overwhelmed hitters with his power, and Greg used pitch placement and varied speeds to make hitters look bad.
Maddux and Johnson, two of my favorites from that era.
Try and be more generic.
I miss this era. I’d also add in Clemens, Martinez, and my favorite from that time Eric Gagne.
@@KentuckyWaterfall13Mussina too.

My best era, at least for pitching, had Koufax, Marichal, Drysdale, Gibson, McClain, Jenkins, plus early Seaver, Ryan, and Carlton.
You’re not gonna get much better content that this if you love baseball folks. Soak it all in
Big unit is impressive for his life after baseball. Have you seen his photography? What an incredible career shift.
The days of these pitchers were so brilliant. So cerebral and intimidating in their own unique ways.
Maddux and Johnson. Two of my all time favs. Legends
I wish these were much longer.
8pm ET ❤
ya this is from the one hour doc lol
Gregg Maddux, Pedro Martínez,, Roger Clemmens, Randy Johnson. Head and shoulders above everybody else all time.

@@BoJackHorseman_eatshay Uff Ichiro,Gwynn and Bonds 1,2,3 play any other 6 average guys in that lineup and they will win 100 games every time.
Justin Verlander
@@Aldine281 Good but not at that level.
It depends on what metrics one uses. But these four should be included in anybody's top tier list ... with an asterisk next to Clemens.
This is PREMIUM CONTENT!!!!
The run on Maddox fastball is what made him so effective.

Very humble of Randy
0:45 I love that “it’s not a speed contest” in modern baseball there are times it feels like it is
This is one of the best docs MLB Network has ever made and that’s saying something. Going into why baseball is great the battle between the hitter and pitcher
There has to be more of this
My 2 favorite pitchers ever! 😊💪
National League pitchers were the best of the breed. They went up to plate and put the ball in play and took their chin music just like they delivered it!
Randy Johnson does and has always looked like an old western sheriff
Cubs fan here. Always loved Maddux no matter the uniform he wore
The greatest on the mound 💯 he’s doing psychology on the mound!
precious!
thanks for making it impossible to watch this doc, MLB Network!
0:58 how would you describe Greg physically?
Randy Johnson: hahaha!
But seriously, both were awesome

That’s 9 Cy Young Awards combined
Randy has the voice for commentating.
Randy looks so different with the goatee and short hair
Where is the full video of this? I wanna see this
Maddux is my goat

I'm glad I got to watch them play 🥲
Loved watching these 2 greats
Is there a full version of this?
0:40 Not even close to a strike, and he got that call throughout his career
Big unit is my fav pitcher of all time. His slider was disgusting. Could listen to him and maddox talk pitching for a week straight
Braves fan so maddux glavine smoltz Avery were my guys but watching Johnson and schilling are up there also
Is there any way to watch this if you missed the broadcast?
Greg Maddux is the final boss of pitchers. he looks unassuming but he uses that perception against hitters like a ninja and they can’t believe what happened after they strike out.
Maddux had a filthy slider just nasty
He is not the boss of pitchers you fool
Maddux was a top level athlete. He wasn't just a great pitcher.
4-)
a_00 p
The only 2 pitchers to win 4 straight Cy Youngs.
Basically said "All I had to do was to be better at the game than the other guys" 😂
Look up Greg Maddux Red Bull Prank on Kris Bryant if you haven'y seen it.

Looks like a teaser for an MLB Network special. They've dropped a few clips the last couple of weeks

Get rid of Kershaw and replace him with Koufax. Koufax ERA was around 0.95 during the playoffs as a starting pitcher.

those glasses 😂🤓
I’m not sure I agree about his stuff being like everyone else’s. The movement was sick on tv.
How in the hell did the Braves manage to win only one World Series when you had Maddux, Glavine, and Smoltz on the mound?
Braves drove us Giants fans nuts. Ww won 103 Games in 93 when Atlanta was in the nl west. They knocked us out in a one game playoff game. Heartbreaker
Giants were loaded.

If you combined the two men then you’d see a no hitter every other game.
You mean like someone who could throw as hard as Johnson within a quarter inch of where he wanted it all the time? Nobody would ever hit him.
@ Someday somebody will and they’ll move the mound back to 70 feet.
Randy is either fast ball or slider. The maddog was off speed and, catch off balance with a fastball.
0:40 There's evidence of a ball outside.
Lol
