Shujaat Husain Khan (born 19 May 1960) is an Indian musician and sitar player of the Imdadkhani gharana A(school of music). He has recorded over 60 albums and was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best World Music Album for his work with the band Ghazal with Iranian musician Kayhan Kalhor. He also sings frequently. His style of sitar playing, known as gayaki ang, aims to imitate the human voice.
Born in Calcutta to legendary sitar player, Ustad Vilayat Khan. He has musical pedigree that goes back seven generations: his grandfather, Ustad Enayat Khan; his great-grandfather, Ustad Imdad Khan; and his great-great-grandfather, Ustad Sahebdad Khan - all leading artists and torchbearers of the Imdadkhani gharana with its roots in Mymensingh (present day Bangladesh). He has a brother, sitarist Hidayat Khan and sisters sufi singer, Zila Khan and Yaman Khan.
Shujaat Husain Khan has performed at numerous music festivals in India and has traveled around the world performing in Asia, Africa, North America and Europe.
His approach to rhythm is largely intuitive, fresh and spontaneous, always astonishing his audiences. He is also known for his exceptional voice, which he uses for singing folk songs, including the album Lajo Lajo, as well as poetry, as in Hazaron Khwaishen.
Shujaat Khan was featured in the concerts celebrating India's 60th anniversary of independence in 2007, and performed at the Carnegie Hall, New York, Paramount Theater, Seattle, and Meyers Symphony Theater, Dallas. In a special performance, he also played at the United Nations in the Assembly Hall, Geneva.
His memorable appearances include performance at the Royal Albert Hall in London, Royce Hall in Los Angeles and Congress Hall in Berlin. In the summer of 1999, he was the featured soloist with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. His collaboration with different genres of music has been a very strong point as is evidenced by the enormously successful Indo-Persian venture, the Ghazal Ensemble. Their album, Rain, was nominated for a Grammy award in 2004.
In January 2000, the Boston Herald listed Shujaat Khan, along with luminaries like Seiji Ozawa and Luciano Pavarotti among the top 25 upcoming cultural events for the year.
He has been invited as visiting faculty at the Dartington School of Music in England, the University of Washington in Seattle, and at UCLA.
He is also known as a fearless collaborator, lately having done wide ranging concerts with artists as diverse as Karsh Kale to a successful Jugalbandi with Pioneer Hindustani Vocalist Ustad Rashid Khan. One of the best remembered collaborations of the year 2009-2010 happens to be Melange. Featuring Tim Ries on the saxophone, Kevin Hays on the piano, Karsh Kale on percussion, Katayoun Goudarzi on vocals, Ustaad Shujaat Khan on sitar, Karl Peters on bass and Yogesh Samsi on tabla, Melange has toured extensively across India.
Ustad Shujaat Khan has recently tied up with Inroom Records, a Mumbai-based experimental / fusion label and artist management company, to handle his collaborative work.

Ustad Shujat always brings out the best of any lyrics, songs, poetry, folk songs with the mastery of his prowess over both vocal and sweetest sitar music. In this piece, Ghalib's poetry has been so beautifully rendered. "Hui Muddat Ghalib Mar Gaya Lekin, phir bhi yad aata hai, Woh harek Baat pe Kahena, Ki yun hota to kya hota"

Our Honourable Ustad SitarVadak Shujaat H. Khan.... Bhaijaanji, when gets moved by any poetic line.. written by any poet .. from anywhere, simply closes his eyes to feel the depth of each of those words first.... and in
a very natural way, his fingers start to find out the exact tune, matched with the line and he himself starts singing on and on and on... and finally completes his chosen raag... and then starts playing with the speed... in a full swing.. till the end.. as I have marked each time.
Each soothing, touched tuned word, goes on recurring within the inner soul of each comer in the hall.. even after leaving the hall.... with no end to reach The End.. . even.
    High Regards !

Hazaaron khwahishen aisi ke har khwahish pe dam nikle
Bohat niklay mere armaan, lekin phir bhi kam nikle
Daray kyon mera qaatil? kya rahega us ki gardan par?
Voh khoon, jo chashm-e-tar se umr bhar yoon dam-ba-dam nikle
Daray kyon mera qaatil? kya rahega us ki gardan par?
Voh khoon, jo chashm-e-tar se umr bhar yoon dam-ba-dam nikle
Nikalna khuld se aadam ka soonte aaye hain lekin
Bahot be-aabru hokar tere kooche se hum nikle
Bharam khul jaaye zaalim! teri qaamat ki daraazi ka
Agar is tarahe par pech-o-kham ka pech-o-kham nikle
Magar likhvaaye koi usko khat, to hum se likhvaaye
Hui subaha, aur ghar se kaan par rakh kar qalam nikle
Hui is daur mein mansoob mujh se baada aashaami
Phir aaya voh zamaana, jo jahaan mein jaam-e-jaam nikle
Hui jin se tavaqqa khastagi ki daad paane ki
Voh ham se bhi zyaada khasta e tegh e sitam nikle
Mohabbat mein nahin hai farq jeenay aur marnay ka
Usi ko dekh kar jeetay hain, jis kaafir pe dam nikle
Zara kar jor seene par ki teer-e-pursitam niklejo
Wo nikle to dil nikle, jo dil nikle to dam nikle
Khuda ke waaste parda na kaabe se uthaa zaalim
Kaheen aisa na ho yaan bhi wahi kaafir sanam nikle
Kahaan maikhane ka darwaaza Ghalib aur kahaan vaaiz
Par itna jaantay hain kal voh jaata tha ke ham nikle
Hazaaron khwahishen aisi ke har khwahish pe dam nikle
Bohat niklay mere armaan, lekin phir bhi kam nikle...
    TRANSLATION-
Thousands of desires, each worth dying for...
many of them I have realized...yet I yearn for more...
Why should my killer (lover) be afraid? No one will hold her responsible
for the blood which will continuously flow through my eyes all my life
We have heard about the dismissal of Adam from Heaven,
With a more humiliation, I am leaving the street on which you live...
Oh tyrant, your true personality will be known to all
if the curls of my hair slip through my turban!
But if someone wants to write her a letter, they can ask me,
every morning I leave my house with my pen on my ear.
In that age, I turned to drinking (alcohol)
and then the time came when my entire world was occupied by alcohol
From whom I expected justice/praise for my weakness
turned out to be more injured with the same cruel sword
When in love, there is little difference between life and death
we live by looking at the infidel who we are willing to die for
Put some pressure on your heart to remove that cruel arrow,
for if the arrow comes out, so will your heart...and your life.
For god's sake, don't lift the cover off any secrets you tyrant
the infidel might turn out to be my lover!
The preacher and the bar's entrance are way apart
yet I saw him entering the bar as I was leaving!
thousands of desires, each worth dying for...
many of them I have realized...yet I yearn for more

Thanks. I remember having read this translation of yours in Frontline or Caravaan.
But I m afraid u have completely misunderstood the second sha’r. It is the killer who who wd repent all through his/ her life bcz of sense of guilt or whatsoever and would keep weeping. Thus repaying all the blood on his / her hands ( obviously, bcz each tear is worth forty blood drops). So, why should the murdered fellow weep and how come bcz he ( the lover) is already dead. Plz correct the translation.
Another related sha’r , again from Ghalib is:
      Mahaba kya? mein zaamin, idr dekh;
      Shaheedan-e- nigah ka khoonbaha kya!
      ( Worry not, I take the responsibility, look here ( and I get killed);
No blood money is paid to people killed by looks ( as the sole responsibility of not withstanding the beloved’s looks lies with the victim himself)
