‘The Demon Within’: Disturbing Murder of College Student Katelyn Markham
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 26 апр 2023
- Katelyn Markham was a college student just weeks away from finishing her graphic arts degree in Ohio when she went missing in 2011. Two years later, her body was found badly decomposed in a wooded area across state lines in Indiana. The case went cold until March 2023 when authorities arrested Markham's then-fiancé, 34-year-old John Carter for her murder. Investigators discovered disturbing writings from Carter, showing his struggle with “the demon within,” between loving Markham and killing her. The Law&Crime Network’s Angenette Levy breaks down the horrifying and tragic case with Markham’s father, Dave Markham, and Ohio-based criminal defense attorney James Bogen.

the most wild thing about this case is that he can get out of prison while be suspected for murder because of money
Just saw him at the local grocery store with the girl he murdered best friend
and skin color.
I can tell you, because I personally knew Katelyn, that she intended not to go to Colorado, but had gotten an internship at an ad agency in Cincinnati. I heard that from her, not hearsay from other people. John Carter was in no way nice or good to her, and I know this for a fact.
How did he treat her? Was he the type to threaten to hurt himself if she even looked at him wrong. I'm so sorry. To lose a dear friend to this must be excruciating. Now you can watch justice happen for your friend. Toast to her and do what she wanted to do, be successful and happy. Take care.
@@missolesoul Katelyn was respected and loved by a lot of people. When her family talks about how she was kind and friendly to everyone, she was.
I sit here and see that he was finally charged, after everybody knew he did it, is still hard to believe she is dead. Everybody knew he did it, both police departments in Fairfield and Hamilton knew, and I can only say that his family has some kind of influence in Butler County. Think about how he worked as a teacher showing people how to blow glass, and he has enough money to post bond? That is $100,000 he paid right away. The bond was a million. So his family knew this day was coming.
She was everybody's friend.
@@billyyank5807 I am in the documentary movie, so I haven't exactly not been heard.
You are so strong, and have shown yourself to be a true friend, even to her memory, and I am sure you have witnessed the opposite too many times here. I lost my best friend to a drunk driver and I still get so angry and seethe, and he wouldn't want me to sit and be angry about his ending instead of honoring him by having the life he would have wanted for himself and me. She wants you to live and be happy.
I hope you have a group of friends and family to confide when you need them. Court is awful but that is the final thing you can do for her.
@@moorek1967 What documentary and where can I watch it? This is my first time hearing of this case. I'm so sorry for your loss 😢
Dude is out on a $1,000,000 bond?! Ugh.
You pay ten percent
There was no 10% on this one. An actual million dollar bond was posted for him.
@@annwilliams2958 I couldn't pay 2 percent lol ..
@Ann Williams probably his families retirement. They will get the money back if thr 1000000 was actually paid and not the 10% assuming he doesn't run.
That's just wrong. 12 years of freedom and now after the arrest he gets to continue
The 24 hour rule is not true you can report somebody missing as soon as they are missing if they try to tell you you have to wait 24-48 hours you tell them that is not a law and you would like to speak to the supervisor you have to pull a carry on for it
I don't know how anyone still thinks you have to wait 24 hours,
I cannot comprehend how anyone indicted on any murder charges should be out on bond of any
Amount 😤
Innocent until proven guilty.
People are wrongly arrested all the time.
The only issue is that it involves money, since that forces low income people to stay in jail by design, which ruins their lives and may not be deserved.
It’s really hard to defend yourself when you’re stuck in jail.
Me either
Right off the bat, you know Carter was guilty. He brought up the festival and said there was "questionable people" there... he's trying to divert attention from himself.
That entire initial call is a goldmine of lies and poorly attempted misdirection.
I'm lonely. Then i listen to TC cases about their partner killing them or dating site killings. Then i realize, I'm not that lonely.
😂 yess better lil lonley but alive 😅
You base your life decisions on events which whilst tragic are very very unlikely statistically speaking? not saying you shouldn't be careful but have some perspective.
😕
I’d rather be lonely too! At least I get to keep my life and my sanity.
Right there’s always someone who has it worse than me so I try not to complain. Also, I could Never imagine losing a child. You might as well put me in the looney bin cause I would lose my mind.
Free on a one million dollar bond?! Who are this guy's parents? The Rockefellers?
I thought this too. They likely either put up property or multiple properties or they used a bail bondsman, which is usually about 10%, so they paid probably 100k or 150k, which is still a TON of money. Someone must REALLY love him to put up that kinda cash. They usually make bonds that high for murders to ensure they don't get out. & he did? That's honestly insane.
@@toxic_city judge denied 10% it had to be in full
Did anyone hear what I did?? He said "her phone is not there but it's still positive/on"???? How did he know phone wasn't there?
How was he also pointing out "questionable" people in the street when she just wasn't there and could be out for a walk. Of course he knew she was dead. He just kept handing himself to them on a plate and they ignored it.
This lovely young women did no harm to anyone, I hope she gets Justice. To the incel idiots commenting on this, go ask Mama to take you to a movie or something and leave this to the adults.
Her fiance is really odd. Listening to his voice in the 911 call I would have suspected him "straight" away
Me too and this video says there’s another man arrested or interrogated
stop it please , just stop . people who detect things only after things are made clear
@@tristan583 ⬇
The moment he started talking about the festival up the street, you know he was guilty. He was trying to point the police away from him.
I went to college with Katelyn. She was an amazing person, and never should have left this world the way she did. I saw her the afternoon before she went "missing". Just for a moment in passing. I could tell she'd been crying, Said hi and hugged her. I asked if all was okay and she just smiled and wiped her cheek. She told me, it was all fine, and she was just stressed. Then said she'd see me later and left. I'm glad she is finally getting some justice after all this time. My thoughts are with her family, and loved ones. Justice for Katelyn!
Did you tell investigators this?
Exactly. You might remember me, I worked in the Student Success Center and I witnessed a phone call from him and she was crying.
People who watch these videos but didn't know her don't know how much out of character it was for her to cry, let alone show sadness.
That is why we remember these things, because it was remarkable.
I'm so sorry you've lost your friend by this monster,so sad 😢
God bless you Dave, surviving this trauma takes my breath away.Stay healthy
1:36 - "I know you're not supposed to call in a missing person 'AFTER' 24 hours....OOPS I meant 'before' 24 hours."
Freudian slip there?
As if people worried about their loved ones care about that timeframe. He's a psycho POS who couldn't handle "No".
Angenette Levy is so great at her job!! She never makes it about herself - so respectful!
I found it very telling that he said hey car was on the driveway, lights off, should be at work, then he says hey cell phone is missing but was never inside?!.. I'm so grateful that she was found and that justice is coming. Praying for the family and loved ones, ladies, when a person shows you who they are BELIEVE THEM!!! Stop making excuses for their terrible behaviour, be careful... Blessings
He also never called her work to see if she was there because he claimed she wasn't allowed on the phone at work and didn't want to get her in trouble.
If scooby doo taught us anything. It’s that monsters are people. Not imagery demons.
John Carter's first phone call sounds strange.
Even the 911 operator didnt believe him 😂
There is no justice. If there were, that man would have his beautiful daughter alive, the boyfriend would be dead, and everything would be as it should be. No matter how the judge punishes her killer, her family and friends will always have a huge hole in their hearts that will never heal.
That's why the death penalty is so senseless.
It's just more killing and the victims can't be brought back.
Such a tragedy..12 years is a long time for justice...for loss... Praying for Katelyn and that her family can finally start truly healing send ❤.
You're just as nutty as the other religious freaks lol 😆
I went to school with Katelyn. We ALL know he did it. It's a crime he was able to live his life out of jail for so long. Hopefully justice gets served.
I hung out with Katelyn, John, and the whole circle of friends in high school and a few years after. It’s made me sick he’s got to live his life all these years. I guess the only, tiniest bit of consolation is the idea that he most definitely thought after all these years he got away with it and getting to imagine the horror he felt when he was finally arrested. Unexpectedly having his life ripped away like Katelyn. Even if they are able to lock him up the rest of his life though it will never be justice for taking Katelyn from this world
Remaining single, as a woman, seems much safer these days unfortunately.
It always was. Not safe in your own home or outside it. People are crazy.
@@algimante2097 I agree with you. Sad state of affairs.
So the 3 cases of moms killing their kids in the news right now means nothing? It's just men huh?
Not always.... single women get taken advantage of all the time. Especially when they live alone
And you base that on a few tragic events you hear which are statistically unlikely
Katelyn was the sweetest girl. She was always so considerate of others and was gentle in everything she did. I knew he did it, I could always tell he was lying. I told people I thought he did it, no one believed me. Is the death penalty legal in Ohio?
I keep reading comments stating there's no evidence against him. We actually have no idea, because neither law enforcement nor the DA show the evidence before trial.
Why does every 911 operator sound moderately annoyed??
😅 because the public is usually so annoying.
Antoinette clearly affected by this. Touching.
Why kill anyone? Just move on!
A woman can never hurt you if you just move on!
'A woman can hever hurt you' 🤓
Press pause.
He had been with her for over six years and didn’t go inside her house to find out if she was inside.
(In testimony)
Just because his momma had the same stuff in the garage doesn’t mean she did it either.
He also said..her phone is not there..how did he know that if he didn't go in? Good catch @Mizzo
The fact that he acted as if he was worried and really cared when in all reality he wanted to block her from her forward movement so much that he did the unthinkable. Anything you do in the dark you will be judged for. It may take time, but you will always reap what you sow into this earth. May judgment be bestowed upon him to the fullest extent.
Hi, Angenette, I remember when you were here in Cincinnati. I remember when this story all began. Glad they are finding some closure.
Bless this dad.
Great interview 👍
I was like: How, why?

Be careful who you get involved with, ladies. Sadly, this young womans life met a tragic end.
Yes, it's our responsibility to make sure we aren't senselessly murdered

Whenever you feel uncomfortable in any situation, especially with a partner and you’ve voiced it and they don’t care…..
LEAVE. That person is dangerous!
Pls ladies/men don’t do anything that makes you uncomfortable and feel compelled to do because you like/love the person.
You have basic human rights and our bodies will feel uncomfortable when something is extremely wrong! Don’t be an empath with these people (predators).
Leaving is the most dangerous time, as in this and many other cases of women who have been murdered by abusive partners. I don’t think you understand that it’s often not as simple as that.
@@SerenityChaos1975 and once they’ve decided you belong to them, good luck getting them to let you go. They will stalk you, manipulate everyone you know to siding with them, and they will never leave you alone. You’ll spend the rest of your life waiting for the other shoe to drop
The most dangerous time for a woman is when she tries to leave a scary relationship and when she's pregnant.
@@kingayy9267 you’re right. It’s when we realize we can’t leave that we finally understand and know that we need to. Abusers trap us, and they do it on purpose. They’ve likely already created the “flying monkeys” by telling falsehoods and lies to everyone we know. 9 years later, I’m still learning of lies he told that people believed since he told them 9-10 years ago.
@@SerenityChaos1975so what other alternative do you recommend? Just like with quitting cold turkey, it is physically dangerous to you in the short term but will save your life in the long term. The same thing applies here, if you won't change the situation you are going down either way.
If he did it, death penalty. Murder should only have 1 penalty option.
Heartbreaking 😔
Hello, and Thank You for posting. My heart goes out to Katelyn, and her Heartbroken Family.🥀🥀🥀🥀🙏🙏🙏🙏🕊️🕊️🕊️🕊️
I feel so bad for katelyns family, having to go through years with no justice. I pray he gets exactly what he deserves
Judging by the husband’s voice, it sounds like he plays on the down low.

If it hasn’t been to court yet should they really be discussing specifics in their one to one
how the F...k did he find 1 million dollars ? seriously ..that is crazy
Very sad 😔 all these young people or any ne getting taken from this world too soon it’s absolute horrible 😢
2:03 It would be weird for John to think Katelyn wasn't safe after she didn't answer a few calls from him. Maybe she overslept?
He clearly didn't realize how guilty this call made him look.
It's about time! Justice for Katelyn!
How can you kill somebody but then get let out on bail 😂 America is rotten to the core. It’s all about the money
Such a tragedy... :( May you find peace Katelyn Markham! My thoughts are with your family!
I'm confused. He's charged with murder but is out on bail! WTH!!!

“My fiancés missing”
Where was the last you seen her?
“Her house”
Uhhhh ok, why didn’t you call her family and friends first! That call alone seemed off..

ALSO..you didn't go in her house but he says "her phone is not there" hmmm another big oops!!
Why when a woman want to end things … the first thing the murdered girl’s boyfriend acts like he’s so in love .. so he kills her? I will never understand
It's called narcissism.
Males like him have huge ego. They can't take the fact that a woman don't want to be with them (aka most amazing thing that graced the earth).
@@algimante2097 exactly. the same when it’s reversed like Jodi Arias, a narcissistic woman who believed if she couldn’t have Travis, the man she murdered, then no one could …it’s disgusting how people see others as mere objects to be possessed, used and discarded.
@@tianaaaaa4862 Rarely are the roles reversed. A detective said that a man murders a woman to keep her to himself, & a woman most often kills to escape.
The fact that he tried to point out possible suspects "questionable people" in his phone call shows he did it. Getting in early to look innocent like other ones.
This defense lawyer remains true to form. Looking at way's he could disprove ALL the evidence. "Well, you can look at this, this way, and on and on". Sounds like James Bogen wants to get on this defense team to me. Then do what they do best, cop a plea deal!!! Sickening, and insulting to her family and friend's!!
LOL That's literally the job of a defense attorney - to find ways of disproving all the evidence. It's called finding reasonable doubt.
OTOH, I don't see his input as being how you characterized it at all. He seemed fairly balanced in his appraisal of pieces of evidence.
I’m afraid these charges will end up getting dropped. This kid is going to have a high powered defense team and it doesn’t sound like his friend is going to flip on him.
It sounds like "If I can't have you then no one will have you" scenario.
She didn't want him or anyone else at that stage. She just wanted to be free to do her own thing and he just wanted a thing to use. I mean he didn't even go in the house according to himself and somehow he knew she was missing? She was supposedly just missing and he's accusing people in the street. What a lowlife he is.
Wow,one million dollar bond.
