Update! I am using a spring for my weight. It's the 85N/mm spring from Rally Raid and I have about 4 clicks preload on it. It also makes a big difference from stock. I should perhaps even have one step stiffer spring.
The correct springrate for you'r weight is the key to a good suspensionsetup. You have changed the rear spring. What made you think that you didn't have to make the same change to the frontsprings?
Most change rear only. Better to change front also of course but few do because its more work i guess. And i dont have to 😊 i may be quite ok with this for now
Im sure it will be better. Not saying you are wrong. Just saying most dont do fork springs and some day I will do it for sure. This video is mostly about the rebound/compression which most people dont dare to touch.
Made this adjustment yesterday about 185 lb or 84 K. Most ride back roads. not much off road. This change made a huge difference in performance for me.
Tried these settings out at the ABR festival last weekend. Made a massive difference! I never had the confidence to mess around with this stuff before, but the recipe worked for me. Thanks Robert! Next, new spring!
First a big thank you for this! I am 100kg plus gear, upgraded spring 8.5. I normally ride with luggage gravel travel and rough camping. It never really felt good. So today I used your settings the a fun ride of mud, unmaintauned roads and gravel high speed. The settings worked great. I have + 26000 km the rest will be much better. If you ever get to Alberta Canada you have a free place to stay while you explore....
Hi Robert, I grabbed a screwdriver today and headed to my bike. I cannot thank you enough, the bike feels more planted, and I have more confidence leaning into a turn. Before the bike felt a bit vague on the front end, but now…..wow. Thank you Robert, from the UK🇬🇧
I am right now on the TET France along the Pyrenees incl. lugggage = In total 120kg load with rider. Mounted a 95kg spring some month ago. Until yesterday I rode the factorysetting. This morning after breakfast I changed acording to your indicated settings. A totally different and much better riding and bikeperformance. For me it works and is an improofment. Tks.
How come Yamaha has not shown this before? After all the complaints from different people who mostly found the suspension too soft and then went to spend several thousand euros too buy and install a so called "better suspension " from Rally Raid or someone else who wants your money!!! Good for you Robert, who is the first one that I have seen on You tube to use some common sence and check the stock suspension. Werll done!
It is good idea to put cable tie on fork tube to see how far front fork compress and than adjust it properly. It should stop 2-2,5 cm from the bottom. Than your compression is set properly. It is also good to have some place to test suspension where is different surface and than after every lap make adjustments to find perfect balance. With rear shock absorber you make the same but remember alweys start with finding SAG. On Yamaha Tenere 700 I have problem to set perfect SAG for my weight but I'm close to that. That's why some riders have to change springs for more progressive.
Thanks for this. I'm 100kgs in my socks, I have the rear spring compressed to the max and today I followed your recipe - from a comfort point of view it feels like I've let half a bar out of the tyres. The T7 continues to impress me, I've owned over 30 bikes.
I tried these settings today after nearly 5 k miles on stock settings. If you've not made any changes to your stock suspension on the t7, try this. Feels like a new bike on and off-road. Thank you for the helpful info!
One of the deepest rabbit holes I’ve ever found myself in, was a suspension thread on ADVrider. Suspension really is black magic (there are books written on suspension alone 😬), so it’s nice to have someone who can simplify it for you, thanks!
Thanks! Great video. I weigh close to 90kg, have not changed the rear spring yet (will do), but what a difference this made and so simple to do! Bike feels even more "confident" both on and off road and now also less dive at the front on breaking. Confirming this works in South Africa too :)
Thanks for a inspiring video again! I have tried to summarize the video and comments here as I understand them (What have I learned): Preload, Spring rate and Sag (Get this right first): • Preload starts from full anti-clockwise out. • Adjusting preload means moving the spring starting point (the bike actually becomes higher/lower) to get proper sag. • Adjusting preload to a bike sag around 20-30% with a fully equipped rider. • You actually changed the rear spring to a RR 85N to maintain proper preload ratio (suiting your weight). Compression and Rebound (Then adjust this): • Rebound and compression zero starts from full clockwise in • First click stop is counted as zero Rear suspension: Rear Factory Rebound: 13 clicks from full clockwise in Rear New Rebound: 9 clicks from full clockwise in Rear Factory Compression: 15 clicks from full clockwise in Rear New Compression: 10 clicks from full clockwise in Front suspension: Front Factory Rebound: 17 clicks from full clockwise in Front New Rebound: 13 clicks from full clockwise in Front Factory Compression: 11 clicks from full clockwise in Front New Compression: 7 clicks from full clockwise in … NOTE to fine-tune: If your suspension is getting harder (collapsing) on ripples, the rebound is not fast enough. And if it feels as if it jumps back on you, the rebound is set too fast. You also need to consider two setups - one for solo riding, and one for riding with luggage.
Thank you very much, I'm 78 kg and with equipment I reach 85 kg, I did a sag before and then a suspension setup, it's perfect!!! I did a technical ride and I was hovering it changed the whole bike
I was going to pull the trigger on a budget ktech rebuild, but decided to give this a try first as I too am still rolling around with factory settings. My bike and I thank for your great content as always! Cheers from Canada.
I was sceptical but I gave these settings a try, and I know it's easy to imagine these things, but I'm convinced it has improved the bike on the poorly maintained roads we have in the UK. The suspension felt hard and chattered and crashed over certain types of bumps or ripples in the tarmac, but this really seems too have taken the edge off that, it also seems to have reduced the fork dive at low speeds around town. I think I'm right in saying that all of these settings are making the damping stiffer, which is counter intuitive, as I would have expected softer damping to have cured the problem. Suspension really is a "Black" art !!
Haha. Now you've started something! I've been messing with the clickers on my 1200 Super Tenere for years. Watched this vid, went to the shed, applied the principles of your settings (fewer clicks on the ST12). Took it for a thrash down the nearest dirt road. Yup, works on the 1200 as well. 👍😃
Thank you for this info. I pick up a slightly used T7 on July 13th. I rode it off-road a little on July 14th in South Dakota. It was okay but not great. Watched your video on Saturday night July 15th. Arrived at Hidden falls adventure park on Sunday July 16th. Made the adjustments you suggested, WOW. The T7 was awesome. I took it on some of the same trails as my R1200 gs. The T7 is so much better off-road. Thanks again.
First time I'm working with the suspension setting other than preload. Now, after setting the Tenere with your recommendations, I'm glad to say that the first impression is very good. Thank you!
This simple tune removed that awful rear jarring that you feel up your spine when you hit a sharp bump at speed and made a noticeably smoother ride. Awesome free receipe!
I have been riding for several hundred Years... This is first time I have ever adjusted from any factory settings, I just dont know enough, therefore this video is priceless, I have made adjustments as you have shown, I will see how my T7 feels next ride - THANKS.
Hello again, I'm just here to share my experience. My T700 has now 4,000 km and I have been running on standard suspension settings. THEN, I saw Nomad Sweden suspension setup guide. I followed the explanations perfectly since I thought my factory setup was just too soft. Even the front end dived when I braked hard, but I had a very plush ride. With Robert's settings I made a 10 km run on and offroad and, for me anyway, the whole bike felt really hard and clunky. So I backed out all front and rear compression and rebound 2 Clicks from Robert's settings, then ran the same 10 km run on and off road. WOW - now it's superb. No hard braking dives, still smooth and now gentle of road instead of the hard, clunky bit as before. Nomad Sweden is right - make an adjustment, test it, make small changes and tweaks, and keep testing until it's right for you. My bit of advice is TO WRITE EVERYTHING DOWN so you can proceed step by step - and you can always go back to previous settings if you really mess up !! Good Luck and thanks again Nomad and Robert !!
Thanks for this too, Robert! 👍 For me, at least, just great and very helpful with such concrete advices! Followed your recipe and experience clear improvements compared to stock settings (I'm 95 kilos before getting dressed - and road riding mostly). Pleasant side effect is that I actually learned something about suspension settings! 👌😃
Great video! I think videos like this are always much more useful than '10 items you NEED to buy to be able to go offroad'... Much more practical, much cheaper and much less clickbaity. I do think OEM suspension is sufficient for 95% of people. Yeah sure nice gold ohlins look flash, but often its not the suspension lacking, but the setup that makes you think the OEM is 'crap' (with the exception of perhaps a spring too soft for the weight). Only thing I was missing in the video, was the suggestion to first get the spring and sag correct for the rider. Especially the sag, as it can also be done for no cost. Adjusting damping is not very useful if the sag is not correct (because you can have a vastly different spring stiffness, and thus require vastly different damping).
I have just return from testing this settings. 50/50 road / offroad. I'am impressed. Suspension work's really nice. Much better than stock settings. Thank's a lot !!!
Read a lot of stuff on how to set compression and rebound pressures, but this is the first time I have seen info on what might be good adjusted setting to try first. Thanks
OK first ride after following these tips, what a difference on the rough roads around my home, much smoother, suspension vastly improved over stock settings !
Thanks Nomad Sweden , followed your lead as i am same weight as yourself and have 2022 tenere700. Totally transformed my bike. fitted lowering link 20mm and dropped forks by 10mm . i now really love my bike bike set up. I can relax at slow speeds now.
Excellent Robert, just what I have been looking for. I have been running on the factory settings and the whole setup feels really soft. I weigh 90 kg. I had both my track bikes suspension fully configured for me professionally by Dave Moss Remote Tuning Service, and needed this one for my T7 !!! Great Job !!
Such a great video on how to adjust the settings. I am sure for everyone's individual bike you can find the optimal settings based on your weight on the Internet and now you know how to change them. Thanks to Robert
Nice one, mate. I just tried your settings and it’s way better off-road. Maybe too stiff on pavement. Anyway I kept your settings and just backed out the screws 2 clicks on rebound and compression both front and rear and I think I’ll keep these settings now. Thanks for the video.
I have just bought a Tenere 700 and it was lumpy bumpy on my first ride out, so will adjust to your recommended settings, before an epic ride out today. i will report back later. Thanks.
I have had my 2022 T7 since late May. I hadn't changed the suspension settings from stock because I needed to re-spring for my weight (113 kg without gear)... in fact I bought the springs before the bike was delivered. After a busy summer I finally installed the 95N K-Tech rear spring this week and immediately felt that I had made a mistake. On my first road ride the bike was severely under damped (was bouncing after bumps) and just didn't feel good. I saw your video and used the settings as you presented (one click more rebound damping in the rear). I will play with adjustments once I get the fork springs in... but this made a huge difference. Thanks for the video... just the nudge I needed to start playing with the settings.
Hello, great channel for observing the service and motorcycle settings. Today I decided to set the suspension according to your instructions, I'm already waiting for the test. You probably already changed the entire suspension to an accessory one.
Very interesting indeed. I have been trying many different clicker settings on my 690 over the past 12 months or more. I change things, ride then make notes. Repeat, repeat. After setting the sag, I like 3 to 4 clicks harder than stock, for both rebound and compression, which is basically the same as your settings. Cheers
Rule of thumb I use for the Clickers … Clockwise = stiffer/slower Counter clockwise = softer/Faster Thanks for the video. I’m on a KTM 690R and thinking of a T7, if they ever get plentiful in Americans can 😜
G'day Robert i have just install Andreani Misano cartridge kit. 20mm piston, adjustable rebound/compression from top of fork, 8.5nm rear spring on stock rear suspension 90 kg + rider(i will try your settings to see how that goes. As for now it is next level I love it. Cheers Billy
It’s the Robert magic effect 🤩, like looking behind the scenes of David Copperfield 😁🤪 seriously many thanks for the tips- I still have another spring for my weight but never changed the rebound and compression. So did today and „tested“ some meters the street nearby - for my opinion it worked much smoother from the first feeling. On the weekend I have 200+ km of street riding to an off-road park and then on Sunday I could test also off-road - so I am looking forward 😁. So many thanks!!
Now this I can handle.. No idle match on sag and measuring shit. Just a rough match for someone of my weight. Cheers, thx for the ease of it.. its gonna get done tomorrow.
Finding out the black magic of suspension tweaking turns out to be fun. Thanks for your video. One day I should own a T7. And you were right in getting the correct spring(s) for your weight. Reminds me: Got to make my Aprilia Tuono 1100 V4 a tad harder for fast riding in hot temperatures, it's really sensitive. Cheers from Nürnberg, Günter
Hi Robert, Really great explanation of the basics of suspension tuning. Tuning suspension can be a dark art at times and most everyday rider won’t fiddle with the factory settings. You’re absolutely correct saying that once you find the sweet spot that matches the riders weight with the bikes geometry it transforms the ride for the better 👍🏍. Cheers from Australia 🇦🇺
Thanks Peter. Yes I needed this recipe to get started and it worked so well I had to tell about it. Btw, just sent in a visa application to Australia. Sadly not for me but for my daughter :) One day I will apply for my own. (was down under back in the 90s though)
@@NomadSweden , Robert, my lovely wife is from Malmo. We try and visit friends and relatives when we can but due to the worldwide situation over the last couple of years we haven’t had the chance. We’re planning for sometime next year. I realise that in reality we are total strangers to each other but just a friendly suggestion…if your daughter needs any assistance while she is here and she has no one to turn to, just message me and if it’s within our powers my wife and I will help out 👍🇦🇺. Just a thought to give you a little piece of mind.
I made this adjustment before my Georgian Caucauss mountains trip. The bike became harder both on-road and off-road. Stability is much more better than stock settings. But i felt, i need a little bit softer feeling especially on hard rocky sections. I will soften it more 2 clicks and try one more time (NOTE : I,m 100kg and bike was loaded with aprox. 25kg of luggage)
Nice vid! Like your channel :) Regarding preload, my understanding is you dont compress the spring by increasing it making it stiffer. Rather you raise the starting point of the stroke of the suspension by increasing it, if you measure the height from the ground to the rear of the bike with zero preload and max preload you will se the rear is higher with more preload. if the spring is to soft for you it will still be, but atleast you will hawe more stroke avible to use :) Dont mean to bash you or critisize your vid in any way, i found it really helpfull! Just wanna give you and the comunity a reason to try the preload knob as it is kind of a band-aid fix for a to soft rear spring :)
You are correct. Adjusting the preload does not affect the daping rate of the spring at all. It sets the "starting point" to the correct level when you are sitting on the bike.
Thx for the settings , tried out yesterday and found it to handle a lot better,, but my 240 lbs needs heavier springs ( on back order). Still bottoms out on heavier g-outs when landing. But much better, thx again from Ontario Canada.
Good job, you got to play with it. There's only so much effect the stock adjustments provide. A little hair around the bottom of the fork would help. Safe riding from the hills of east Kentucky USA. Look forward to a new vid from you. Always interesting perspective.
I just follow your instructions, and it does makes a difference, big difference... The thing, i also put a set of TKC80, i am a bit old fashion, but feels better than great👍
When I changed my tires from the Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR to the Dunlop Trailmax Meridian I had to readjust all the suspension settings. And to do that, I had to experiment for a while.
Hi Robert. This has transformed my bike! I used Your settings with a spring from K-tech for my weight, both in the front and back. Now its more surefooted, and reacts the right way to my input and the rough roads. Thanks a lot!
Hi Robert, long time no seen! Thank you for the tips! You said you should have done this sooner. Well, maybe not too soon. IMHL, we (hopefully) evolve as riders and the compression and rebound for a track that you ride now *should* differ than the the ones you rode 45k km in the past. You definitely know intimately your bike after so many kms and you are able to ride it more aggresively now. You also have something to compare it to. ✌
Thanks for making this video! Going to try these settings on my first ride of the season here in a few weeks and can't wait to test it out. Thanks again.
Stort tack för tipset! Gjorde detta på min T7 Rally häromdagen och märkte direkt skillnad! Tvättbrädorna tex var skakiga som bara den innan, nu är de helt borta :).
Wow, this was awesome, thank you! I stupidly did not realize I could adjust the rear outside of the pre-load setting. I definitely am going to try these settings on my bike.
Robert ,,Just came across your suspension set up for standard gear. On a two day trip this weekend, I'm going to have a go . Like you "" I I'm shit scared of changing things like that 😱😖🥸 but it sounds what I need as I'm shore the Bike is not handling aswell as it can do.. Thanks again Mate I 👍

I have tried to summarize the video and comments here as I understand them (What have I learned):
Preload, Spring rate and Sag (Get this right first):

Compression and Rebound (Then adjust this):
• Rebound and compression zero starts from full clockwise in
• First click stop is counted as zero
Rear suspension:
Rear Factory Rebound: 13 clicks from full clockwise in
Rear New Rebound: 9 clicks from full clockwise in
Rear Factory Compression: 15 clicks from full clockwise in
Rear New Compression: 10 clicks from full clockwise in
Front suspension:
Front Factory Rebound: 17 clicks from full clockwise in

NOTE to fine-tune:
If your suspension is getting harder (collapsing) on ripples, the rebound is not fast enough. And if it feels as if it jumps back on you, the rebound is set too fast.
You also need to consider two setups - one for solo riding, and one for riding with luggage.

I have just return from testing this settings. 50/50 road / offroad. I'am impressed. Suspension work's really nice. Much better than stock settings. Thank's a lot !!!
Great. Thanks for feedback
Read a lot of stuff on how to set compression and rebound pressures, but this is the first time I have seen info on what might be good adjusted setting to try first.
Thanks
Thanks 😊
OK first ride after following these tips, what a difference on the rough roads around my home, much smoother, suspension vastly improved over stock settings !
Thank for the feedback!
Thanks Nomad Sweden , followed your lead as i am same weight as yourself and have 2022 tenere700. Totally transformed my bike. fitted lowering link 20mm and dropped forks by 10mm . i now really love my bike bike set up. I can relax at slow speeds now.
Great! Thanks for the feedback
I just did these adjustments and what a huge difference thank you!
I'm glad it helped!
Good explanation and easy to follow video. Thank you Robert!
Glad to help!
I m not a Tenere owner but this video is a money saver for a lot of people.Good job!
Just made these settings to my T7...It is amazing!! Thank you so much.
Cool! Thanks for feedback 🙏
Thanks Robert, So the bottom line is the heavier we travel the lower the settings.
Just put these setting in on mine I'll keep you up dated next time I'm out . Thanks for letting me know. Great information cheers
Ive just copied these setting +85nm spring its amazing thanks for sharing this
Such a great video on how to adjust the settings. I am sure for everyone's individual bike you can find the optimal settings based on your weight on the Internet and now you know how to change them. Thanks to Robert
Thanks 🙏
Nice one, mate. I just tried your settings and it’s way better off-road. Maybe too stiff on pavement. Anyway I kept your settings and just backed out the screws 2 clicks on rebound and compression both front and rear and I think I’ll keep these settings now. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for the feedback! Glad you tried 👍🏻
I have just bought a Tenere 700 and it was lumpy bumpy on my first ride out, so will adjust to your recommended settings, before an epic ride out today. i will report back later. Thanks.
Thanks :) Hope you like it
After 200 miles of lumpy back roads, that is so much smoother ride. Thank you for the info 👍👍👍
Just did the adjustments now. Now onto some testing :)
Thanks for the feedback :)
Thanks just dialled these in - think I’m about 95kg so should make a bit of difference- great video
Hello, great channel for observing the service and motorcycle settings. Today I decided to set the suspension according to your instructions, I'm already waiting for the test. You probably already changed the entire suspension to an accessory one.
Thanks. I still have standsrd suspension but have let a suspension specialist tune it for me with correct springs and valves.
Cheers
Rule of thumb I use for the
Clickers …
Clockwise = stiffer/slower
Counter clockwise = softer/Faster
Thanks for the video.
Just made adjustments today! I will report back ASAP. Should be decent, but I may be a bit heavier than you at 260lb so we will see!
Just altered my suspension to tour spec just got to try it out now .so thank you very much.
Haha thanks. This trick I gladly reveal. Hope you feel an improvement on the long trip.
Now this I can handle.. No idle match on sag and measuring shit. Just a rough match for someone of my weight. Cheers, thx for the ease of it.. its gonna get done tomorrow.
Thanks 😊
That was great, Robert. Thanks for the lesson.
Love your posts. Thank you, I am going to give it a go at adjusting my suspension.
Thanks mate
Hi Robert,
Really great explanation of the basics of suspension tuning.
@@peterhird3542 Thanks Peter! Super kind of you. And vice versa, when in Sweden just give us a ping.
Thanks for your feedback 👍🏻
Nice vid! Like your channel :)
Regarding preload, my understanding is you dont compress the spring by increasing it making it stiffer. Rather you raise the starting point of the stroke of the suspension by increasing it, if you measure the height from the ground to the rear of the bike with zero preload and max preload you will se the rear is higher with more preload. if the spring is to soft for you it will still be, but atleast you will hawe more stroke avible to use :)
Dont mean to bash you or critisize your vid in any way, i found it really helpfull! Just wanna give you and the comunity a reason to try the preload knob as it is kind of a band-aid fix for a to soft rear spring :)
Thanks! Actually its great that you contribute. 👍🏻
You are correct. Adjusting the preload does not affect the daping rate of the spring at all. It sets the "starting point" to the correct level when you are sitting on the bike.
Best comment!
Thanks 🙏
Thx for the settings , tried out yesterday and found it to handle a lot better,, but my 240 lbs needs heavier springs ( on back order). Still bottoms out on heavier g-outs when landing. But much better, thx again from Ontario Canada.
Thanks for the feedback! A new spring will also make wonders 👍🏻
Good job, you got to play with it. There's only so much effect the stock adjustments provide. A little hair around the bottom of the fork would help. Safe riding from the hills of east Kentucky USA. Look forward to a new vid from you. Always interesting perspective.
Thanks Sam 👍🏻
My brand new T7 will get this setting cause we weigh the same THX MANN 🤘🤩🤘
I just follow your instructions, and it does makes a difference, big difference... The thing, i also put a set of TKC80, i am a bit old fashion, but feels better than great👍
Happy it made a difference 👍🏻
Thank you for making it so simple!. I’m going to go home and try it. I already changed my rear spring for my weight. Great video, cheers.
Thanks for the feedback. It makes wonders 👊🏻✊🏻
Everything seems so simple with your video. once again I followed your advice and the difference is very pleasant on the bike. thank you
Great, thanks for the feedback. Just like most people I needed a recipe to get started.
Thanks! Yes you are right. With experience things change for sure. Great input
Thanks for making this video! Going to try these settings on my first ride of the season here in a few weeks and can't wait to test it out. Thanks again.
Cheers 🍻
Thank you very much for the excelent video Nomad Sweden! Finally, this is THE VIDEO for T7 suspension setting! :)
thanks!
very well done easy and comprehensive thanks i will try that setting 👍👍
This is such an excellent explanation and display thank you.
Cheers mate
Your video is very clear and you explain very well. I will try these settings. Thanks a lot.
Great one Robert... I will use this as a reference when I start playing around on my World Raid suspension as well. Nice! And thank you 🔥
No idea how it works on the World Aid version but hope it helps 😊
I will try this on my T7 tomorrow. Thank you Robert
Your welcome 👍😃
I’ve been looking for a video like this for quite some time. Thank you so much!
Robert ich danke dir für dieses Video. Wie immer super. Hab's gleich ausprobiert und ja, es hat sich etwas geändert. Testfahrt morgen.
Thx for instruction. Will see how it works. With all my gear I have 90kg. I think I must change the rear spring too.
Wow, this was awesome, thank you! I stupidly did not realize I could adjust the rear outside of the pre-load setting. I definitely am going to try these settings on my bike.
Thanks! I tryed this setting on my bike and it made a great improvement
Thanks for the feedback!
Thanks! Nice trick! I am really hungry for that new throaty soundtrack you got there! No pun intended Hahahha talking about the exhaust
Thanks again Mate I 👍
Good luck! hope you like it
Did it. Tomorrow will go for a ride tomtest it.
Let me know 👊🏻✊🏻
Iam 1,92 and have 115 kilos but I have a WR …. your Tipps 🙏💪 thx best wishes from Austria 🇦🇹
Fesch!
@@NomadSweden need your Tipps for the wright Klicks 😉
@@thomasbinder5288 I can't help you here. The WR has a different suspension that I never tried.
@@NomadSweden thx 4 you info 🤘

Hello Robert, I follow you since a while and always I love the way you create the videos - RESPECT man 👍🏻
2023 I travel through New Zealand on a T7, at home I‘m own a BMW 1250 GS, but after 6.000 km NZ adventure, it‘s clear, I have to buy me a T7 😂
So many thanks for that video about a proper basic suspension setting, I will start like that.
If you AND your crew, will ever pass Germany, near to France, Black Forest, Vosges and / or Palatinate Forest, contact me. It would be my pleasure to support you as much as possible. Stay healthy, my best regards, Georg
