APD does more than law enforcement. My elderly father missed his connection in WAS and somehow ended up in Baltimore. APD let him wait in their office for the next train to Boston. A sergeant walked dad to the platform and helped him board the train. Norfolk Southern railpigs could take a lesson or 2 from APD.
I know right, damn those evil photographers. LOL JK Metra Employees that aren't even police seem to think they are cops. The weird thing is that Metra as a company actually encourages photographers because we're free surveillance for the stations.

You're a Federal Marshal and expected to do your duty as Amtrak Officer and depending can respond to any felony committed in your presence. We work with all departments but depending we don't tread on other Police's feet.
Skip Gibson You're a Amtrak cop? If so, do all Amtrak employees get free train rides and since Amtrak is all over the country, is it easy to transfer to work in another city?
Hi Dodger! I'm a retired Amtrak Cop with 33 years service. I worked in the Northeast where trains run nearly constantly versus other parts of the country. I rode trains on duty between Boston and New York and parts in between. Yes you and your family are given passes to ride Amtrak Trains although I rarely ever used mine. Transfers are fairly easy but you need to make contacts to. Plus everything is Seniority, which builds up over time. You get great training and have opportunities to do every aspect of police work.
Skip Gibson That's amazing!! Thanks for your service!! Also too, how serious does a crime or call have to be outside of Amtrak property for Amtrak police to respond to it?
I used to want to do this when I was younger, while still in high school, but overtime decided that train crew was definitely much more my thing. I currently work for a shortline, but use Amtrak frequently to get to and from my reporting yard and current residence.
Nice video, here is some questions. 1. What is the starting pay ? 2. Is Amtrak Police a Federal Law Enforcement Agency / Officer. 3. What retirement benefits is there and is there a age restriction to be hired ? . ie ; Federal Law Enforcement Officers must not be past the age of 37 due to the mandatory retirement age of 57.
great job it seems as memory does not recall a single huge law enforcement event on the rails, plenty of seedy transients using the observation car as a bunkhouse at night, and the conductors appeared to be in on the deal, yes, all that is true, so sad, to borrow a phrase
Took Amtak cross country, stopped by DEA & sobriety check(not Border patrol). This happen much???? it was nuts. All replies/experiences appreciate. Amtrak police oh well.
They left out a very important position.... DETECTIVES! They respond, protect, investigate and do ALL THE FOLLOW UP. They file the charges, work with the District attorneys, serve warrents....poorly made, because you left out an an integral part of your force... shame on you!
It is in my opinion a shame that it took 9-11 for this Department to upgrade to where it is today. In the 1980's, I seriously considered joining APD, but found it unchallenging and rather operating in the past. Low wages and a sense that the role of the APD Officer at least in Los Angeles was clout of step with the rest of the law enforcement community. I envy what you do now, stay safe.
There are a lot of police agencies out there. City cops, county cops, college cops, train cops, state cops, court house cops, many federal agents and agencies (fbi, us marshals, DEA, ATF, Federal reserve, US Capitol police, US customers and border) only to name a few. To bad I cannot become a cop now that I am a felon :(
Do you have anything to say about shooting that unarmed construction worker in Union Station in Chicago on February 8? Did you catch him breaking any laws?
i was hurrased by the Amtrak police in Reno Nevada just bcuz im Mexican my first time in the train they were being races so i never going to ride the Amtrak again. Thanks to them.
A Minnesota man who was shot by an Amtrak police officer on Wednesday is paralyzed and clinging to life at Stroger Hospital, his sister said Friday. Chad Robertson has a bullet lodged near his spine after he was shot Wednesday while running from Amtrak officers about a block south of Union Station, said his sister, Nina Robertson. Nina Robertson and her family’s lawyer both say Chad Robertson, a 25-year-old father of two, was unarmed. Authorities have not recovered a weapon from the scene.

How about how They do nothing MOST of the time?
So glad that my favorite train service has a police department so it can be protected and kept safe.
This video is a real eye-opener. I never realized the Amtrak Police had any real responsibilities besides chasing away photographers.
LOL! Best comment!

I actually saw an Amtrak patrol car pull over another car on I-95. It was… interesting. Especially after the patrol car sped away at 85 mph after.
I want to be a COP and I love trains! I think this will be an awesome Job for me

Great Commercial for Amtrak Police and the incredible multiple roles they are called on to fill.
Nice to get a feeling for what you did as an Amtrak Policeman. Thanks for sharing!

Do they get their training at the FLETC in Glyncoe? If so, how long is the training?

If you're breathing and have a higher up relative in Amtrak you'll be hired. That's it.
