      @CanadianEhHole Месяц назад +5

      No, they are not. The US has a law that's been in place for 100 years now that forces them to export American resources, only to import it back in afterwards. It's possibly the most asinine law on the books in the US, one of many put in by Woodrow Wilson.
      Goods cannot be transported from 1 US port to another without heavy requirements (US owned transportation, US owned company, All American crew, etc.) so they just temporarily export it to then import it right back. This also goes for natural gas and oil.
      This is why Puerto Rico is always in such dire straits and can never improve. They are effectively sanctioned from the rest of the US as only 4 non-military ships meet this requirement, meaning no one is willing to go to Puerto Rico with goods and then go to, say, Florida. Why bother stopping at Puerto Rico when it forces you to stop in some other country, just to go to the US again? Hawaii also has the same "sanction." Guam and other territories are exempt from this law.

The tariff was a threat only if these concerns are not addressed by us. Also, we have no leverage to negotiate is because we don’t have good free trade agreements with other major economies ( China and India). With all our eggs in one basket, US has all the leverage. The claim that the United States subsidizes Canada by $100 billion annually.
    This assertion is factually flawed and requires a more rational dissection. The relationship between the United States and Canada is one of mutual interdependence, not one-sided charity or financial aid.
    First, consider the energy trade. Canada is, by all logical metrics, the United States' largest supplier of crude oil imports, accounting for roughly 60% of U.S. needs. This oil primarily originates from Canada’s vast oil sands in Alberta. It is important to note that this crude oil is sold, not donated, at market prices, reflecting the value of the resource provided. Similarly, Canada supplies the U.S. with approximately 98% of its natural gas imports, a critical resource for powering homes and businesses, particularly during winter. The exchange is economically reciprocal, with no evidence to support the notion that Canada is being subsidized.
    Furthermore, the economic relationship is not confined to energy. The United States exports over $300 billion worth of goods to Canada annually. This includes a broad range of products, from machinery to vehicles, all essential to the American economy. By any measure, this is a symbiotic exchange, not a case of one party subsidizing the other. Source: US-Canada Trade Relations.
    Moreover, Canada’s contributions to North American security are often downplayed. Through joint defense initiatives like NORAD, Canada actively collaborates with the United States to safeguard the continent. Canada is not a passive beneficiary of American military power; it shares the burden of defense and peacekeeping, contributing to global security efforts. Thus, it would be illogical to describe Canada as a freeloader.
    In conclusion, the claim that the U.S. is subsidizing Canada by $100 billion annually is not supported by the evidence. Instead, the relationship between the two nations is based on balanced trade, shared energy resources, and joint defense efforts, all of which underscore a mutual dependence rather than an unbalanced transaction.
    Mr Trump, I recommend recalibrating your perspective on this matter, as it lacks logical consistency.

      Pretty difficult to do when Canada is going along with the American narrative of "Chinese trading bad." If you really want a trading partner that does not care about anything other than selling you stuff; you look for China.
      Not to turn them into the next big economy to rely our entire economy upon though; look how well that worked for us now with the US. But trading with China should still be part of our effort to diversify our export and import, or else country like the US can throw us around however they want, knowing they have all the leverages on Canada.

By not doing so, you are not getting the best deal for the American people. It's like a CEO who is legally obligated to maximize profits for shareholders. President Claudia Sheinbaum is showing us all exactly what happens when a *real leader* steps up to the plate-and spoiler alert, she’s not putting up with Trump’s bull crap. While Trump seems to think “tariff” is a magical buzzword he can slap on like a cheap Band-Aid to every problem, President Sheinbaum is here to remind him that Mexico isn’t just going to roll over for his ego-driven antics.
      This is what happens when you have a woman in power: she’s not about to waste time on petty playground politics. She’s focused on progress, not playing into the whims of a man who thinks diplomacy is just a fancy word for “bullying.” And honestly, I really hope in my lifetime people finally get a clue: *women in power do not tolerate bull crap from men like Trump.* They call it out, they push back, and they keep moving forward while the world’s man-babies are stuck whining about how things didn’t go their way.
      So, pay attention to Mexico, people. President Sheinbaum is leading the charge, and she’s not here for the circus act. If the future looks like more women in power standing firm against tantrum-throwing “leaders,” then sign me up. It’s about time the world learned what real leadership looks like-and it’s looking more and more female every day.
      I'll end my response with this quote from Sally Field's 2007 Emmy win:

    • @halams3772
      @halams3772 Месяц назад +3

      Trump hated NAFTA so he imposed tariffs (Section 232) on certain steel and aluminum products. The core response was to eliminate NAFTA and sign USMCA. This mitigated much of the tariff impacts, although many Canadian businesses suffered the first 1-2 years of Section 232 before USMCA. Even with a trade agreement, it is ok to impose new rules based on national security concerns - hence why the focus is on securing the border re illegal immigrants and drugs. Legally, this is 100% fine. Not sure what you are saying about changing origin stickers, that sounds like fraud to me. It is fine for me to buy raw materials from the US instead of Canada, send it from the US to Canada and build a product with the raw materials, then sell to a US customer and avoid tariffs on the value of the raw materials. You will always pay tariffs on the transformed value that happened in Canada.

      @@halams3772 Actually, it isn't. trump "invented" the security concerns to act as a cover for what he wanted to do. Technically, it isn't legal, but with a bought and paid for SCOTUS and stalling on any 3rd party trades disputes, something allowed under NAFTA and the USMCA, it is almost impossible to come to a legitimate resolution. I would also point out that the US has been found, several times now, to be in the wrong with the weak/invented reasons, yet we never seem to be able to collect on what is owed.
      What tariffs on raw materials? Are you nuts? If a product is built in Canada with material from Canada then sold to the US, it is only tariffed once, when it comes across the border. It doesn't get tariffed twice. I would guess that Canada will probably inflict tariffs on certain things from the US based on things that can be sourced in Canada or from a non-American company, like airplanes.

      @ the trade is very much mutually beneficial. Obviously a country with 10x the population will consume more and is going to import more than a smaller country. We are each other’s largest trading partners and I know it may be hard to see the benefits further south of the border but many northern states benefit greatly from our trade agreement. I mean just look at crude oil imports from Canada. How many American jobs are created from the refining of Canadian crude oil? And not to mention the immense value added when crude is refined that contributes to your economy much more than it does to ours. And what about electricity? Canada exports electricity to many states for cheaper than they would sell it to Canadian customers. If you look at the deficit from this perspective it’s pretty clear that Canada is not the one robbing the US.
