  • A Popular History of Signs live gig with six unreleased* songs feature in the 1985 live set - the band planned a new album for French label Mosquito, but "all their funds went on 'overheads' on a Don Cherry album". Tracks:- 1 Mind in Motion* (excerpt), 2 Art of Persuasion, 3 Wine and Roses, 4 Labour in Vain*, 5 So Busy*, 6 Five Towns*, 7 Trapped*, 8 Land of the Free, 9 Comrades, 10 Language of Life*, 11 Lenin. The tape then ends at the beginning of House, they probably also played Ladderjack, Stigma and more, but you'll have to stick with the studio versions for those.
A Popular History of Signs formed in 1981, first on their cooperative 'Melodia' label along with fellow north London band To The Finland Station. After 3 Melodia singles (Justice Not Vengeance, Crowds, Dancing With Ideas) they moved to Jungle in 1983. Further indie-chart singles If She Was A Car/Stigma, House/Ladderjack, Body & Soul, and Art of Persuasion were issued as well as an album, Comrades ('84), a compilation, Taste ('88) and the mini-album Western Wind ('88) with an evolved line-up. Ladderjack drew the attention of Al Jourgensen of Ministry, who remixed it for an early release on Chicago's Wax Trax label. With album releases also in France and Spain, they found a bigger audience outside the UK.
Line-up: Rod Macauley - keyboards & guitar, Paul Clarke - percussion, Andrew Smith - guitar, Christine Isherwood - vocals, Andrew Jarman - lead vocals + bass. Filmed 14th June 1985 at Dolce Vita, Lausanne, Switzerland.
