After many GS'ers the 2021 1290S is the best bike I've owned to date, thanks KTM.For the shaft boys who dont like a chain,I dont oil it and its done 13k miles been adjusted once and looks like new.
@@aleksandarbotic979 I've never cleaned or put lube on, occasionally I'll put a small amount of engine oil and a rag and run the chain through it. I dont offroad though but ride in all weathers. Why lube it when the rollers are enclosed in grease from new, people spray lube on but never get any on the wheel side of the chain anyway and most is flung off when riding, I cant see the point.
Warranty is only 2 years, pretty bad deal. KTM says «Our faith in our products is such that we provide a 24-month manufacturer’s warranty». Well, my BMW has a 5 year warranty with unlimited milage. So theres that
I hate chains too don't you shafts are maintenance-free maybe you have no life and have nothing better to do but oil a freaking chain I wish every bike with shaft driven.
Just collected my 2023, same orange one. I'm very happy to have it next to my 2010 990R, feel lucky. Still, while you said the seat is comfy, you should have added that the one in video is not the one comes standard. Both exhaust and seats are extras to the standard bike.
Hi, thanks for your comment. We will always try to tailor our bikes to suit different conditions and the needs of different riders. This can be achieved by using the wide range of parts from our #KTMPowerParts catalogue. These parts are always developed with the rider in mind and do offer some benefits over the standard equipment. We hope you enjoy your new 2023 model as much as you 990R!
Looks like this bike is getting me back into business after 10 years of driving mostly cars. 2010 Z1000 was my last bike which I loved back than and this KTM literally ticks all the things I want in a motorcycle today. Great job KTM👍
Yeah I am considering the 1290. Mostly because this commercial is so awesome and Chris Birch is such a humble and good spokesperson. It makes me happy seeing Chris Birch and his humble attitude, but it also makes me a bit sad to be an American and to know that it's almost impossible to find any Americans that can speak in such a humble and kind way. I'm so thankful for the English, Australian, and New Zealand motorcycle channels on RUclips, and so very grateful that I can access them from the USA on RUclips, because I don't feel any connection with the arrogant American riders who can't fix their own engines. I love the deep knowledge and wisdom of the old world riders.
No wobbling at high speed? Completely stable up to 150mph topspeed? Please offer S with optional spoked rims like original 1190 had and other adv bikes with electronic suspension currently do.
I had a '21 or '22 1290 SAR. I shuddered to think about riding such a bike on street tires like the "S" model has, on a dirt road. If you are going to be stuck on street tires, may as get something more sporty IMO. And if you have knobs, you can't use all that motor, even on asphalt as the tire just spins up or TC intervenes, so you might as well get the 890 ADV-R which is way better on dirt due primarily to its lighter weight. It also has better switch gear. The 1290 SAR's switch gear is like the 1290 SuperDukeR's which is wonky and prone to accidental activation, especially with winter gloves, and has quite possibly the worst turn signal switch ever fitted to a motorcycle. Only problem with the 890 ADV-R other than the auto-dissembling fuel petcocks is the faulty engine mapping which has the engine running on one cylinder upon cold start - for which KTM still had no solution last I checked. Unless they changed it this year, the exhaust on the 1290 SAR substantially interferes with comfortable placement of the rider's right heel, forcing it outward or forcing the foot too far forward on the peg, even with only a size 9.5/43 foot. It is REALLY annoying. That and the constantly annoying switch gear were the major reasons I got rid of mine for the 890 ADV-R. I don't know if it is the same on the "S", but would check it out closely before buying.
These big ADV bikes are amazing and, you're right, they're fun to ride hard on the road! My 2019 has never felt uncertain on the front with the 19 inch wheel, to me (no chicken strips, so we get leaned over pretty good). This new SAS version has a new chassis geometry which I understand is even more front-biased, so I bet it's already pretty good on front-end feel. I've decided that I'm ok with the 19 in front wheel, but tire selection is a truly significant issue if your goal is sporty riding on the road, and that's where the 17 might help the most. I've got a new front tire I can't wait to try, and I'm just waiting for the rear, to make the change. I do suspect there's a difference between the Duke GT and SAS for sporty touring, so I get why you'd want a 17 in front on the SAS. I just think with the right tires, this particular difference is probably smaller than most people think. I can go much faster on the SAS than I should, already, without taking any risks due to the 19 in front.
@@CurtisBrandt Actually in some areas have diverse terrain and "not so good" tarmac like my hometown, touring adv bikes like SAS are capable of showing their best performance rather than speed only. Moreover, tyre manufacturers do offer sport touring tyres those big ADV bikes. 😆
@@severussnape6886 Absolutely. I don't need any convincing. And there are some sport touring tires that work great I am sure! The Hayabusa was one of the bikes with a specific goal in mind, and that bike was hugely successful and awesome. But most of the modern Japanese adventure bikes are somewhat ordinary and average in every area, and don't seem to have a specific thing that they are best at. KTM has gained credibility and a reputation as a leader in performance, because they have consistently focused on performance and nothing else. The other companies need to find their niche, and they need to do a better job of staying in their niche, because they all seem to be lost, except KTM.
@@jonasbaine3538 nice bike, but it's a gas guzzler...it consumes fuel like there's no tomorrow. Also it's much more road focused compared to the 1290 SAS. And then there's the 1290 R which basically runs circles around any other adventure bike when going off road.
I had one this bike, may I know the rally mode and sport mode is it same hp?? Also my bike the top speed just 210km/h maximum... is it something wrong ???
@ktm Is there any change for 2024 adventure s in terms of 2023 model. Will it be the same bike as 2023. I am asking because of thinking to buy 2023 model. Or is it better to wait 2024 model? I could not figure out at your website. Thank you.

My BMW k1600 after 16k miles was burning oil. I had one month left on my warranty. Brought the bike into my dealership. BMW gave me a brand new engine. Now that warranty and customer service.
I'm really looking seriously at the 1290 SAS, I do have concerns though; any input from owners, and KTM is greatly appreciated. I've heard about the turn signal switches not coming on or turning off when used. Camshafts delaminating, TFT's not working properly/ or intermittently, bikes shutting off while riding, and not restarting. Steering is extremely loose from the factory. Overall, I love the bike, I want one, however I am concerned about reliability, I intend to make a trip from Texas up to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska. Again, any updates, or advice, insight, etc. will be helpful. I have a few bikes I'm looking at right now, and I've been looking at every aspect so that I can make an informed decision. Thank you, guys. :)

I had Akrapovic fitted on my 890 Duke R before and the sound had changed a lot. I think the 1290 Adv also wants such an upgrade.
Just like with the 1250 GS the 1290 KTM SAS needs to have both the throttle and the suspension in sport mode otherwise it is a hesitant wallowy boat. In Sport mode however, and with the manually selected compression and rebound front and rear it stays really well glued to the ground. The biggest issue are the Terraforce tyres if you are really hammering it because while they steer fine they dont really tell you anything about what they are doing underneath you.
The KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE S definitely offers next-level performance. The ride modes are there to suit the varied conditions you might encounter on an adventure, for example, the smoother delivery and less peak power of the Offroad Ride Mode.
If I would spend that much money for this bike, the warranty and customer service has to be just as good. If I was riding thru the states, will there be dealership and supports near by? If not, I ll wait and stick to other brand rhat has it.
I dont ride adventure bikes. More of a street/sport bike rider, but Im just lost on how you even mount the adv1290. The seat height is like 50 inches. I feel like a toddler on it. Im 6ft and my feet dangle a foot off the ground. What do you do when you have to stop and there is 600lbs pushing you over?
I'm 6 ft, too, I own one, and while it is certainly a big bike, I can flatfoot it with the lower setting of the seat. I don't have incredible lengthy legs, neither, and my preload is set to 60 or 70 % most of the time. Let's face it, you must have really, really short legs. Or you haven't tried it.
The happiest days with a KTM, are when we buy it and when we sell it. KTM motorcycles are a big problem, brand and dealers are unresponsive to customers.
Love my 2020 SAR and looking forward to putting more miles on the 2023 890 Duke R that I bought partially to spite a bmw dealer that was being dishonest
Great review Chris!, actually I'm riding a 2018 1290 SAR, looking to change it for this 1290 SAS, because I don't do much offroad in this beast...and I'm just 169 cm of height...the lower seat and CG will make things easier for me!...😅
Ktm, this review should have been made in the first year the bike got out wich is 2021. Nothing about how changes have been made in comparison with 2021 model! Just commercial blabla about on how it's supposed to be sport touring bike...
Thanks for your comment. KTM is always evolving and moving forward. The 2021 model is an exceptional bike, but we have to focus on the latest machine. Hopefully Chris's insight gives you all the information you need. For more details on specs, head to KTM.com
I recently bought a KTM 1290 SAS in 2022, I'm amazed at how powerful, fast and handling it is. Releasing the handlebar while riding but the bike pulls to the right, will the exhaust terminal be too heavy? and at high speeds the front feels too light. Other than that the bike is perfect. Thanks to everyone who works at KTM, from designers to test riders and assembly line workers.
@@jonasbaine3538 already from 180 km/h I feel the front end light. I have to figure out if I'm wrong in adjusting the suspension and preload or if it's an intrinsic defect in the design of the bike. no handlebar shaking, I don't trust picking up speed to find the limit. but on youtube there is a video that tests the stability at high speeds.
@@aleksandarbotic979 In the beginning I kept it at 30% with suitcases, topcase and passenger, now I'm at 50% but I don't notice any improvements. the front suspension is always automatic. Do you have suggestions?
75-year old rider here respectfully! Worked for a motorcycle touring company in Italy - taking folks riding all over the world - on all sorts of motorbikes. On and off-road. Don't buy a 1,300cc 160hp "missile" if you want to enjoy riding a little bit of off-road. Unless you just want to pose! And too tall, too big and too heavy. Pillion - forget about it. And dealing with these monsters for 2-weeks - turns it from an "Adventure" to a "Nightmare" for most riders. And if long distance touring on the road at high speed is what you want - there are many much better bikes than these hermaphrodites! Jack of all trades - master of none. There are very few riders in my experience that need a bike like this. Nice bike though.
I love my KTM Super Adventure S. Too bad when the fuel pump went out at just 6,500 miles and only 3 months out of warranty that both my local dealership and KTM both ignored me. Awful customer support from this brand. Do better, please.
@@crk58241 As I said, the warranty ended 3 months prior to the fuel pump going out. Where I live, the bike is in winter storage for 5 to 6 months each year.
I had the 2022 model but it was stolen after 6 months. Great bike, maybe I will buy one again in 2024. I dont dare since I know it will probably get stolen again.
I wish they would have changed the headlight fairing arrangement to make more like the 2023 890. I’m not a big fan of the bug headlight look. Otherwise nice bike. I bought a new 1190 back in 2014 then later switched to the 790 in 2019. I may go back to the v-twin because I miss the power.
KTM1290 Super Adventure S KTM bicycle manufacturing company... a leading company with a global reputation... I suggest adding another radar that prevents cars from suddenly colliding with the bike from behind... and the bike automatically increases its speed to avoid a sudden collision with the bike from behind... Can the company develop a radar with these specifications? ...I hope so.. Thank you.. I am your biggest fan.. Illustration of the radar or sensors to protect the bike and increase safety from the rear. If a dangerous approach approaches, it may cause the bike to be hit by cars without the bike driver noticing. Is it possible to do that? I hope so.
🤔.. the styling is contentious, that bug eye look .. but ultimately after riding one I found it felt quite plasticky & cheap .. yes it has some engine pull, but as always it comes to reliability when you part with you cash .. & there are still too many gremlins with reliability to buy another so … it’ll be German or Japanese 🏍️ for me

Had 1290r adventure after the 1190r wish they would make a 1390r or 1490r or s still waiting
Where is the 2023 adventure s is made what country?
Great review, makes my want to trade my Super Tenere in.......
Thanks to everyone who works at KTM, from designers to test riders and assembly line workers.
at what speeds exactly does it feel light? any wobble/shaking?
@@jonasbaine3538 already from 180 km/h I feel the front end light. I have to figure out if I'm wrong in adjusting the suspension and preload or if it's an intrinsic defect in the design of the bike. no handlebar shaking, I don't trust picking up speed to find the limit. but on youtube there is a video that tests the stability at high speeds.

@@sbabbaro1977adjust the preload, its probably to low, at what percent is it now?
@@aleksandarbotic979 In the beginning I kept it at 30% with suitcases, topcase and passenger, now I'm at 50% but I don't notice any improvements. the front suspension is always automatic. Do you have suggestions?
Great 🫶🧡🫶
That's all great, it really is but the big question everyone wants answered is this... Does the bloody indicator switch actually work! 🤣🤣
My dream bike ❤❤❤😊😊😊😊
Always ready for adventure,
READY TO RACE! Ready for ADVENTURE.
I don't understand why ktm don't make 790-890-1290 sports bike that would sell great
because they are useless
Ottimo mezzo un mio amico di Torino ( Italia) e andato da Torino in Calabria , da Torino in Spagna senza problemi,il suo e un modello 2021
Thank You Almighty God for blessing me with Your grace I will buy one for myself
I will take this over a gs 1250 any day.
I love my KTM Super Adventure S. Too bad when the fuel pump went out at just 6,500 miles and only 3 months out of warranty that both my local dealership and KTM both ignored me. Awful customer support from this brand. Do better, please.
Did you not have a 2-year warranty on your bike?
@@crk58241 As I said, the warranty ended 3 months prior to the fuel pump going out. Where I live, the bike is in winter storage for 5 to 6 months each year.
That’s the reason I will ever buy one
I had the 2022 model but it was stolen after 6 months. Great bike, maybe I will buy one again in 2024. I dont dare since I know it will probably get stolen again.
He sold me on the snack warmer part
You never know when you'll need a hot burrito!

You can’t really “review” your own product 😂
Looks like great fun!
2024 KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE S
Por favor una versión de las especificaciones en español ya que en México se están logrando grandes ventas de la ktm 1290
KTM is king
I wish they would have changed the headlight fairing arrangement to make more like the 2023 890. I’m not a big fan of the bug headlight look. Otherwise nice bike. I bought a new 1190 back in 2014 then later switched to the 790 in 2019. I may go back to the v-twin because I miss the power.
And wish they were better with the colours

KTM bicycle manufacturing company... a leading company with a global reputation...
I hope so.
Top n good i like
🤔.. the styling is contentious, that bug eye look .. but ultimately after riding one I found it felt quite plasticky & cheap .. yes it has some engine pull, but as always it comes to reliability when you part with you cash .. & there are still too many gremlins with reliability to buy another so … it’ll be German or Japanese 🏍️ for me
The bike looks awesome. But what's equally important is quality. That's where they are missing the mark. That's what keeps me from buying one.
יש את התרגום בעברית?😢
At 3:59: "But on a 1290cc bike we want horsepower as well".... Isn't this a 1301cc bike????
It’s not 1290cc, it’s 1301cc Birchy
