Yeah. When I make a city it’s more like, “I need…um…industry! Imma plop a bunch of cool looking factories I found on the workshop…somewhere…I guess not too far from housing that workers can’t get there, but not too close that they’re breathing smog…um I guess here-ish.” And I wonder why my cities don’t look real.
I just realized that you are like the Bob Ross of city planners. Very relaxing and not judging. "No mistakes. Just happy little mulligans." "Now we can cover our lumpies and bumper with these happy trees." Love your videos
I've always compared the two. Back in the BC days, I remember making this comment: People plummeting to their deaths off the gondola. "That will resolve itself over time." One of the best quotes ever.
I think that Redwood Island is a good name for the little island, and Phase 5 can be Redwood Heights (or Hills). I think Phase 4 could have a holiday-themed name to bring together Verde Beach (green) with the Red of Redwood Island, plus it is that time of year! We have a ski resort near here called Holiday Valley, and while Phase 4 is slightly on a hill, it is lower than Phase 5 and might be able to take on the Holiday Valley name.
Hello viewers! This is Andrew Hamilton with The Daily Fire Starter News. Top news today is that the city government is restarting its planned city on the river! But, with this, controversy occurs as a developer from outside the city is building this area. Many residents want a local developer to make this area for a local design. In minor news, a flooding occurred in the nearby Iron county with 23 missing and 5 dead. What is opinion on this matter? Speak to me bellow and and I’ll see you next time!
The road that goes through the lungs of the city park has generic date palms in the middle. You should change those to be whatever tree is in lungs of the city so that it blends better.
So according to my RUclips history, I watched the first episode of Verde Beach on December 21st, 2021. Here we are almost exactly a year later, and I have finally caught up. I love the real world reasoning to explain the way you do things, and the story that has organically cropped up. This is one of my favorite long form series, and I appreciate all you do!
The lungs of the city is a great addition! The path leading down to the water was a great touch. I think that would be a great spot for a pier or a viewing deck.
Your series is ridiculous, no one has ever went into so much detail and lore for the most creative game available today I believe, I'm blown away, and wish a great 2023 for you and your family.
I imagine when a new DLC comes out that the story could go in the direction of the city planners of Verde Beach attend a conference that has new city planning techniques. So we take a break from the city to go to the conference and then come back to build what we can lol.
It would be cool to visit other cities and see their planning then come back to your city. I think it would open up a lot more of a community in the game.
Your story makes this series stand out but beyond that you create a brilliant finished result. Considering I don’t play vanilla and never on a tropical map I am amazed at how much I love this city. Keep up the great work.
You can replace the power lines with a water turbine. I think a tram would fit well in this area, linking both sides of the river to the stadium/train station
For the island with the lungs of the city, I think a single windmill on the island would actually fit pretty well and avoid the ugly power lines. Also, please add death care!
Hi Phil, loving the videos since you first started Clearwater County! If I had to make a recommendation, it would be to take that steep connection to the high school, and bring it to the Mothership road so it's just one intersection. That would also allow for a gentler slope on that connecting road. Keep up the great work, especially with the narratives you add to each episode :)
"engagement"! today is a big day for me, as i spent the last year watching verde beach grow from episode 1 and have finally caught up with new episodes!! best vanilla build ever, well done phil! :)
Bridges baaabyyyyyyy! Love your work man! The way you fully RP the reasoning for each build and back it up with legitimate, real world logic is fantastic! I play on Xbox so seeing such a long running series that only uses vanilla is massive for me! Thank you dude!
The results here are stunning - it's one of the prettiest builds on hilly terrain that I've ever seen in CS. Now, to try and learn to be able to do something like this...
I just discovered this channel and I think it's amazing how you interact with your audience and create stories about the city. I have never played cities skylines, yet I've already watched three of your videos all the way through.
I know we are dubious about the value of sound barriers, but could we get some high fencing along the highway side of Phase 4 (shown around 28:40)? The landscaping is great for sound and aesthetics, but I would be so uncomfortable having two parks and backyards open up to the freeway without an actual barrier. Fencing is expensive but there may be value in running some from onramp to offramp on that stretch.
Nothing went well in a filming point of view in this ep - the stadium burst into flames as soon as you started the time-lapse and the one house you singled out started upgrading when you were talking about it. Little story: my grandfather, by inheritance owns an island like the one you built the park and bridge on, and the government reacquired part of to built a road and rail bridge, as well as a parking lot. The island is mostly unusable to us. Love your work Phil! Edit: Just realised that this is Verde Beach 111! Such an awesome series.
Random comment lol: Phil I've decided you are the led zeppelin of CS creators. Amazingly creative, one of the best at what you do, and always tell an enthralling tale.
Honestly, you make it really interesting which is why I like your videos and when I’m sad, it’s easy to watch your videos and get lost in the stories and forget the troubles in my life most recently I created a life, but before it could be born, God took it from me, and I’m struggling to deal with that this helps me escape in a healthy way
After watching your videos for so long, I've finally gotten off my procrastinating butt and started my first proper city. It may be lacking in aesthesis and real world practicality, but I've got around 35K (I think I'm around there) population, around 80% traffic flow, a 5 star lumber, farm, nature reserve, and zoo, a growing university, and a comfortable profit margin as I plan out my next major expansion and how I might want to set up my future airport. A key to the game I found is patience, especially in the early game. You've gotta accept that before you have healthy cash inflows from industry that it's okay to just sit and wait for your funds to build up for future expansion. Once I got my fishing and lumber industries established, money started rolling in and I was able to expand pretty aggressively. I'll get more "artistic" in my building in future builds. Also started finding just how many elementary schools you need to keep the education availability in the green. The schools just aren't big enough. However, a liberal arts college and a cranked education budget (and maybe a third factor, it escapes me) goes a long way in limiting just how many schools you need to build.
I really love the way a story is been created by using history and historical figures. I've been playing cities skylines for nearly a year, and I cannot come up with a way to make my cities successful. It has taken me almost a year to catch up with the videos been posted. I really do love this series.
Oh man it’s so good to come back to this channel. I finally got a new computer so o can come back to Cities Skylines on Steam. It was a fun distraction on the Switch, but you can’t go much beyond 140,000 residents without things slowing to a chug. I’ve been watching the Ultimate Beginner’s guide and it’s extremely helpful with navigating all the DLC that’s come out since I last played on PC. Oh, plus a lot of the DLC is on sale right now on Steam. Thanks again for making these videos! They’re extremely helpful!
I just love how thoughtful and realistic you try to be with Cities Skylines and just by watching you through the years has made me make even better cities in my games, thank you for these videos!
Engaging! Great balance with challenging shapes and topography of nailing the function while maintaining attractive form. Woulda liked to have seen the hood a bit more built out after some more sim time but I'm sure we'll be seeing it in a more developed state in the future. It can be frustrating (for you most of all I'm sure) limited by vanilla but it's also more impressive seeing a vision come together looking great without the tools most of us take for granted. I'd have assumed any vanilla build would be my least favorite but I still really enjoy Verde Beach. And for console players I'm sure this is a huge inspiration. I also feel like your development lore continues to improve and get more fleshed out over time. Perfect example here of a cool new concept for phased development and then you go and layer even more content on top of that. Builds excitement to see what the future holds. Do you ever see CC or Nicolet Bay ever getting to metropolis level like Verde Beach? Seems like Nicolet Bay was meant to be a counterpoint to VB but I could see CC go any number of directions.
Thoughts on a proper IT cluster? Something like a Silicon Valley/Seattle & Redmond region? Some type of Utopia too, good public transport, and "green' feel, but "IT" at the same time.
Okay but... look how MASSIVE Verde Beach has become! It's really a stunning city. Congrats Phil! This should forever be your biggest pride motivation and the jewel on the crown of your channel. A city build basically on vanilla. Not even MoveIt! Is included. Just, astonishing. 44:27 for the city overview Also! Phase 4 should be named Amon-Ghus. Let's say... the developer was Egiptician =)
Looks Great! Two suggestions: 1. You could run a bus line from the stadium railway station the institute and the neighbourhood behind it. 2: At the Island, I would have placed a cemetery at the other side of the park, because it seems like a rather quite place where you could rest in peach. There's just one road on the island and no building whatsoever
Love it! I actually think the floating wind turbine is a great way to jump power to the island because sustainable power goes great with nature reserves, and also it just looks cool! Also, are you planning on giving this new development any more public transit? Maybe just a tram or bus line, I think that could really help. Lastly, check the coverage for elementary school near the new phase - I don’t think there is much. Can’t wait for the nest episode!
@cityplannerplays : Phil, at 18:30 (more or less) you did the same thing on 5b1c, and I think you can do way better... do an exclusive bike lane road IN PARALEL to the fancy bridge. Why lose the stetics or history in favour of biciles, when you can have both?
I was going to make some suggestions but I have to remember this is just a vanilla build. There is 2 things I would suggest though that should be doable. At 27:05, the road connecting to the school can be a little more graded if instead of directly hooking up straight to the top of the hill, have it s-curve behind the fences and slope it up more gradually to meet the other intersection a little distance away from it, it may also leave more room for building along the top of the hill by moving the road as such. And at 22:50, whether the tree was there or not, the viewing deck does not work. What are we viewing there, people's back yards? Why not move that viewing deck down toward the water end of that trail. And I hope you properly zoned that area into 1 big park, it would help increase land values, maybe including that island with the Lungs of the City.
Oh man, that tip about how changing the road type “resets” the 4U spaces, I have been dealing w the fencing doing that for so long and thought gee, there’s definitely enough space but it’s just another one of those “vanilla oddities” that can’t be helped. Thank you CPP.
The ammount of grading you folks seem to do in the US is honestly insane. Imagine if suburban architecture was more modular to conform to the terrain. Urban development in the West Coast often does this, and there's much to be learned from them.
It's more of a limitation of the game in these examples. He was talking about terraced houses which are the best solution for building on hills, but the game doesn't recognize this possibility. My home city is built on a cluster of hills and there are many houses with retaining walls and terraces to keep the topography respected.
Similar to the Bay Bridge in San Francisco, the bridge actually goes through the island. Due to the difference in land, it would've been super cool to see that bridge actually go through the island and maybe a little road that corkscrews around the island to the top for a vantage point.
Hi Phill. Noticed you misser three road segments while replacing the trees for date palms. One near the highway, one near the city service buildings and one at the lungs of the city. Awesome story telling and awesome city building.
Lovely stuff! I do like a nice bridge or two 🙂 I decided to re-watch Bluffside Crossing from the start (I watched the series 'live', and it's what got me in to the game). It's quite impressive how you now do things in vanilla with ease that you were struggling to do with mods back then. I love VB, but I do miss BC sometimes!
Loving the new additions! Something minor (not city related) but I think your chevrons pointing out the day’s plans should be pink to match the thumbnail theme of Verde Beach
Hey CPP. I would like to know if I could be an ex-worker at Johnson Aggregates, but when I got enough money for my goal in life I quit. That is because my goal is to make my own state park, and I saw the volcanoes near Verde Beach and thought it would be perfect. I want to make a national park called the Mulligan national park, and charge an extremely low fee for people to get in. I would also like to do it to preserve the scenery, allow people to learn about the natural order of the earth, and most importantly, I would like it to be kept as natural as possible, focusing entirely on the animals.
I cannot believe I only just noticed that crosswalks in the vanilla game don't provide ADA ramps. Holy crap! Great build though - always a treat to see the next Verde Beach installment!
I really enjoyed this video. I loved the finished product. I think one of the things that I enjoy about VB is that it really feels like you are forced to make a great city within the constraints of the game.
Finally, I'm up to date on Verde beach, Clearwater county and Nicolet Bay. Love your insights into planning. I feel like you have had a bad experience in your professional life involving 'ponding'. Just want you to know, we're here for you, if you need to talk it over. Just wondering if maybe the elimination of ponding during modern development could be a contributory factor in the endangerment of Amphibians.
I know it's already been said, but I like the backstories you've made. Whenever I'm playing, I always think about what the backstory is, that would cause certain design/development decisions in my region map.
I found your video in a search for advice, and so I’ve been watching your beginners playlist. Gotta hand it to ya, your videos are damn good, but to find that you do full on role-play vids is pretty great
Phill PLEASE make long videos of cars driving around the city, just like those RUclips channels do in reality lol! I'd spend hours watching it and appreciating all the deals and vistas of VB. Make it like a spinoff of the series 🤩
There's something very pleasant about this neighborhood. If I were to live in Verde Beach, I might have to pick one of those homes by the redwood island 😁 Have you considered making it a park space? It might help with land values and allow you to plop some fishing docks on the paths there as well.
Hi! I’ve been watching you for a few months, but have watched ALL of the verde beach episodes! I was wondering if you wouldn’t mind doing a overview of the city. Like go through and explain where things are, such as the campuses, new neighborhoods, etc. i love watching this city grow but forget how big it is and where things are layer out!
I love the stories created when you expand the cities
Agreed. Makes it more interesting to understand why you are planning the way you are.
One of my favorite parts of this channel
The lore is the greatest. I remember Jack Brown sold some of his property and the brown family was never heard of again 😢
It's the best thing about him!
Yeah. When I make a city it’s more like, “I need…um…industry! There are segments of road near the services and the highway that were missed when upgrading to date palms as well...
Redwoods don't work well as trees on the road. They end up getting scaled down by a lot.
That's a great idea! Will get that in the next one!

Similar to the Bay Bridge in San Francisco, the bridge actually goes through the island. Due to the difference in land, it would've been super cool to see that bridge actually go through the island and maybe a little road that corkscrews around the island to the top for a vantage point.
Very cool development!
Love the lil realistic stories you make up in the videos! Adds so much to the projects
I feel like such a nerd for loving the story behind these cities, but I don't care. This is something I never knew I needed.
This might be your best intro yet
Verde Beach storyline is amazing as always! 😍 keep it going Phill
This is maybe my favorite neighborhood in Verde Beach.
That City Tour 🥹 so good...
Loving the new additions! Something minor (not city related) but I think your chevrons pointing out the day’s plans should be pink to match the thumbnail theme of Verde Beach
What about a small switchback on that steep road coming up from the high school? Love how the neighborhood came out overall!
I would also like to do it to preserve the scenery, allow people to learn about the natural order of the earth, and most importantly, I would like it to be kept as natural as possible, focusing entirely on the animals.
amazing video as always. Thanks for making every day better Phil!
Wonderful tranquil neighbourhood. I don't think I could afford to live there, but really appreciated the build.
Oooh this is really nice! Can’t wait for the next phases of this neighborhood
I love the storytelling behind what could just be "I wanted to use a different style and add some bridges"
Glad you're feeling better, CPP!
Verde beach is probably my favorite cities skylines city. It is the most detailed city I have seen without a bunch of mods and I like the storyline
Love the story of it all
I found your video in a search for advice, and so I’ve been watching your beginners playlist. Gotta hand it to ya, your videos are damn good, but to find that you do full on role-play vids is pretty great
It was bound to happen eventually. Somebody went ahead and created story-mode for Cities: Skylines. Well done.
As a real estate professional, I love the realism in the stories of the acquisition of lands and developers etc.
One of my favourite communities you've made! I think I always love watching you grade & terrace cuz I despise doing it myself 😂😂
im absolutely loving this neighborhood! some of your best work
Finally caught up very excited to see this new phase for verde beach
Phill PLEASE make long videos of cars driving around the city, just like those RUclips channels do in reality lol! I'd spend hours watching it and appreciating all the deals and vistas of VB. Make it like a spinoff of the series 🤩
Lived on a number of cul-de-sac's most of my life. Love them! Very little traffic.
I love watching these before sleep, so relaxing
Wooo!! Update for my favorite of all your builds!!!
Viva La Verde!!! 🌴🌴🌴
Verde beach is back babyyyy!!
I love the stories you make for the city! It adds such a nice touch! Love your vids :)
The viewing deck looks into people's gardens and houses. Not sure the residents would be very happy. Loving Verde Beach.
i really enjoy the world building you do in these series!
I am so happy to see how close CPP is to 500K. Here is to reaching 1M!!
Love the narrative. The intro stories are great
That blue house at 42:24 has a great view overlooking the city. A property that would only increase in value.
It doesn't matter what you build, it's gonna be entertaining!
I appreciate the gradual evolution of your city tours
i like how everything makes sense with the city politics, nice dude
