One thing you’ll get to find out as you settle more is that Aussies are generally very trustworthy and kind. Almost every other groups were problematic, with the exception being Australians. Maybe being in the UK has me used to getting bad services, so seeing people being diligent was refreshing, especially when they exceed expectations.

Welcome to Australia. I hope you have a great time here. Your Airbnb experience is fairly normal in Australia. It's quite common practice to just have the key in a key-pad lock box. My children use Airbnb quite often and they actually prefer the lock box system because they don't have to arrive at an exact time or have to find someone to let them in.
We have a very flat social structure here, so everybody from the janitor to the general manager expects to be treated with the same amount of respect. It's also why the person on the phone felt ok to sing to you. Aussies don't put much stock in the servant/master relationship that you might have come across in the UK. Here, that phone call was just from one person to another person. And I hope it never changes. And we need more nurses, so good on you.

A very big welcome to Australia Deo! I think your general impression is fair - people are mostly laid back. Another thing I would see as a positive is that there is not a huge difference in the way people treat each other based on class or job position. For example you would treat service staff at a restaurant with the same friendliness and respect as you would your doctor, and they would treat you the same too. This might partly explain the guy who sang to you on the phone - of course he is there to help you, but he is speaking to you as a human to a human - not as someone subservient. Of course it's not perfect, and you'll definitely come across plenty of idiots here too, but I think there is a healthy culture of treating each other as equals compared to a lot of other countries I've visited in. - A funny example of this you can search on youtube is the guy telling then Prime minister Scott Morrison to step off his lawn during a press conference :)

@@barnowl.Not overtly, but it does stop *UK from being one of the most classist nation in the Western Hemisphere.* You have a royal family who cost a lot more than they bring in, no matter how much they lie about the numbers. The bridges, clocks, castle and towers are always going to be there. No one cares about the tampon king and workshy willy.
The rich eat the young and get away with it in the UK every single time. The current head, an almost a billionaire, still indulged in dodging taxes with his wife...yet they now stand on the podium as leaders and smile like they know they're untouchable. The wealthy and connected in the UK usually get promoted after being found out for acts like bullying and breaking driving laws. Nurses, teachers, firefighters etc have to fight for their salary increments while being charged for meals and transport, meanwhile, cabinet ministers get subsidised meal budgets of around £300 per day, transport budget is almost the same...all on tax payers dime. They also relocate their families in order to make claim on second houses, while the working classes can't even get on the housing ladder.
Ministers can allocate PPE funds to friends and families without due care, break covid laws they put in place by having parties, then swarn off to some celebrity reality show and still get worshipped. Yet, we have people paying fines for shopping for their housebound grandparents during the c19.
Another Conservative scum MP, Andrew Rosindell's take on removing £20 from the poorest people in the country "They may want it, but do they need it?”...the same conservative MP when being addressed about their excessive and frivolous expenditure at the taxpayers expenses...stated “We’re talking about humans with families and responsibilities!”
*Classism is alive and kicking in the UK.*

Most of Australia is really clean. I have always lived here and I never noticed how clean until reactors started pointing it out. It is bad to litter. My son once threw an apple core out of the car window and his father stopped the car and walked back with him to find it. Our son told him but it will go back to the earth and grow an apple tree. My husbands answer was, why do you want to grow an apple tree in the middle of the highway?😂
I was born and grew up in Sydney but I will not go back again because of the roads and traffic. The Harbour, the bridge and the opera house along with Darling Harbour I will always love. Spent most of my adult life in my favourite City, Melbourne and now live on a beach in the Sun Tropics in Queensland. We traveled overseas a lot and no matter how beautiful it was the best part was always the plane landing at home. Australia always calls us home.

Welcome, welcome! Thank you for your first impressions which are so kind and made me smile. Hope it continues to be much the same.❤ Always good to have dedicated nurses here. Yes, the spring is changeable here as elsewhere... high summer hits usually first week in January, thereabouts... I cope with early summer far better but there are beaches and waterways and shady spots , to carefully be refreshed by. May this be a wonderful new phase... so good to get a singer take your call... maybe a first days highlight but thankfully there's some Aussie humour and good will to go round.🙂💐

People often comment on Sydney being clean. One thing that helps with this is the weather. Sydney has more rain than London. But far fewer rainy days. That means big storms that dump torrents. In January and February you'll know what I mean.

Most Australians are welcoming and helpful but don’t assume everyone is accepting and can be taken at face value. As an older Australian I have seen and heard some very racist reactions over the years. From white bigots it is disgusting and shocking but to hear it from Asian people towards African or other Asian people was eye opening. I had a Chinese colleague tell me that Vietnamese people were “all criminals”. I watched two Indian boys scream out “go back to where you came from” to an African boy who had left the train carriage. Find a nice group of friends and be aware that Australia is a great country made up of hundreds of ethnicities that generally get along well together and you can have a really good life here but it isn’t perfect. Best wishes for your future life here.

You are very, very unlikely to see a snake where you're living. Perhaps if you go to the Blue Mountains, but the last self-respecting snake moved away from tourist areas about 20 years ago. Almost every spider you see will be pretty harmless. Some of the big ones can give you a bite that will affect you much as the sting of a bee - not enjoyable at all, but basically not an issue. In Sydney, there are two spiders which can cause real problems. Red-back spiders are small spiders, basically black with a reds stripe on their backs. Unlikely to be lethal to adults, but still a nasty bite. The emergency sections of public hospitals know how to treat them. The ones to watch out for a funnel webs. They are large and black, with a bite which can be lethal. Don't panic as there is an anti-venene available. They live in gardens, under rocks and so forth. Watch out for them. There's a more common spider that looks much the same, but is harmless. Treat them as the dangerous ones. We catch a couple of funnel webs each year (don't try unless you know what you're doing). We take them to the emergency section of a nearby public hospital. They're collected from there and taken to a works just off the expressway to Newcastle. They are milked for their venom, which gets turned into the anti-venene. People presenting at emergency having been bitten are given the anti-venene. It's extremely effective, and my memory is that there have been no deaths since the anti-venene was introduced. You can reduce your risk of being bitten to near-zero if you take few simple precautions - for example, never pick up a rock or garden pot without rolling it over first to see what's underneath.

If you want to feel hot try Cairns in Queensland just don't go up there from December to March its cyclone season its still warm but wet also don't go swimming up there sharks and crocodiles as well as stingers. I live just North of Sydney on the shores of Lake Macquarie you can swim here no crocodiles or stingers. I'd love to hear your views of our coffee culture they say we have the best coffee in the world and best of all (in my opinion) not a lot of Starbucks.
