    Hola from Spain. After 18 years living here we recently moved from our beautiful, self build, into an old, unlived in for over 20 years. Spanish Casita. Living in it while renovating. As with building our last home we lsugh at the problem solving, look forward to each new day & challenge. Many think we are mad, mainly because weve taken this on in our 70's, but we love a challenge, a project, & keeping busy. Look forward to following you, keep smiling. Love ♥️

    You shouldn't test gas with fire. That's a no no. Try it with soap foam instead. If it makes bubbles, you have gas. Ask the shop where you bought the gas to send someone to check the gas instalation and the appliances. They do that. On a lighter note... your cat is beautiful!! I also have a Norwegian forest cat (girl).

    • @RootsandRestorations
      @RootsandRestorations  2 месяца назад +2

      Yes, we should have tested without the gas right away. But, we are still here and bought a working stovetop. Not sure about the type of cat we have because she was a stray. We love her and think she is beautiful also.

    I am about half way through a project to fix up a house in the west of Ireland, while living in it. I think the most valuable thing I've learned is that it's important to enjoy every individual project as I do it, and to take pleasure in living in the house now no matter how unfinished it is.
    Previously, I was always obsessing on how far I still have to go before everything is finished, rather than taking satisfaction from how livable I've made it already and enjoying the quality of life available to me here right now, and that was really stressing me out.
    Enjoy the journey!

    You're gonna get a lot of "advice" in the comments. Here's some from me, who - with my wife - rehabed a 250-year old Riad in Tangier. I think you said this house was 200 years old? And did I hear you mention, as part of the property there was another living structure across the road or something? If so, may be better to rehab the small building first - assuming it can be used as a residence. The initial excitement of the "fixin'-on-things-yourself" phase will likely dissipate. Especially as you continue down the rabbit hole.
    Stuff we "Discovered": Our Raid was seemingly structurally sound...until it rained heavily. The electrical wires used cloth insulation...from 80 years ago, the gas lines came in from the the property behind ours, as at one time both properties were on the same lot, then were devised later. Ultimately, we just had all of the plumbing, gas, and internal wiring replaced. And when Professionals start opening up walls and floors to do so, uuhh! The top floor had been added, and there was no rebar supporting the cement in its roof!
    So if there is any possibility of you two living in the smaller property (or even a RV trailer parked on the property temporarily - with all the modern amenities), it my suggestion you consider that. I'm really interested in the other building, as it could be used for a "granny house" in the future. Again, been there/done that ... Good luck!

    • @RootsandRestorations
      @RootsandRestorations  2 месяца назад +2

      All good advice. We have thought about fixing the granny house first, but it is a complete rebuild and might take a lot of time and energy away from the main house. Currently, we are trying to create the best plan of action to get things moving in the right direction. We have been on the property for around 3 weeks now and the first weeks have been just getting settled in a new place and country. The next step will be working on the house and we will have to replace all the plumbing, electrical, etc. We don't want gas in the future, so we will make sure to remove any gas lines if there are any. The house is around 213 years old from the information we got, but it wasn't very clear. We suspect there will be many "surprises" like you encountered with your house, but that is part of the experience!

    .HELLO. I'LL GIVE YOU 2 TIPS, TO UNCLOG, USE BICARBONATE AND VINEGAR! THE WATER HEATER IS A GOOD BRAND, BUT THEY MUST CORRECT IT, THE GAS EXTRACTION TUBE MUST BE 50 CENTIMETERS AND ALWAYS UP, TO REMEDY THE SITUATION THEY MUST OPEN THE WINDOW, SO THAT THERE IS NO CONCENTRATION OF GASES. HUG

    Um técnico de gaz tem que ver se o esquentador não precisa de manutenção, pois já não funciona há muito tempo. Teem que ter cuidado. É muito perigoso. Esse esquentador agora não é permitido na casa de banho, só na cozinha.

      @@RootsandRestorations Interesting! It looks fairly remote where you are, so I thought everybody would have their own well. How is the water quality (what you have right now). Is it drinkable?

    • @RootsandRestorations
      @RootsandRestorations  2 месяца назад +1

      We are about 10 mins from a bigger city (hospital, groceries, schools, etc.), so not too remote. The water is from the city (mains water), but we haven't started drinking it yet. They said it was fine to drink. So, once we replace some of the older pipes, we will switch over.

    Mhm, I think you should get someone professional to get your warm water heater going, or buy a new one and let it install, same with the gas. Buy a new gas stove. It’s not worth the risk to work with an old appliances when it comes to gas.

    JUST BECAFULL WITH THAT CLOSE TO THE BATH 🛀 BECAUSE THERE IS A DANGER ⛔ OF ELECTRICITY. SO YOU NEVER TOUCH THAT WHEN YOU GET OUT OF THE TUBE. AND BETTER SOON WORK IN THE BATHROOM AND KITCHEN, AND TAKE THAT TANK OUT OF THE BATHROOM AND INSTALL A NEW SYSTEM TO HEAT THE WATER. TALK WITH A CONSTRATOR TEAM, TO REBUILD THE HOUSE AND ASK FOR ISOLATION FOR THE WALLS BECAUSE THEY HAVE IN PORTUGAL. TO KEEP YOUR HOUSE WARMED IN WINTER AND COOL IN SUMMER.

    You guys are so cute, everyone will love your show. Most of the appeal is how you have no clue as to what you are doing, so when you do not get killed I celebrate. All of us start out that way. I had a stove burn my eyebrows off. I nearly got electrocuted. Wasp stings. Nearly fell off of a roof. Now I have a beautiful home in France. Sadly, the French are uptight small minded corrupt people, so I prefer my old home in Austin, Texas. The good part is that if you succeed you can go for hours on end not think about which hideous Republican is trashing our USA. Let me know when you are in Paris. Meanwhile, purchase a simple stove and a Frisque water heater and get a plumber to install them both for 500 Euros.

      @RootsandRestorations  2 месяца назад +2

      Yes, I think everyone starts out a little clueless, but that is part of the fun. Learning new skills and building the life/house we want. Thanks for the comment and hopefully your French property can improve. As for the US..... no comment. lol
