  • Take a virtual hike with me into this ancient place known as Lake Wales Ridge State Forest in central Florida. There are many miles of trails and scenic places to roam along Lake Arbuckle and Reedy Creek. The area at one time in Florida's distant past it was covered under the ocean except for this ridge which was a chain of islands during that time. Hiking through these places it is like exploring ancient beaches and habitats... You may discover some history along the way as well and wildlife as well. It is one of the most beautiful places in my opinion to hike in Florida but best to be enjoyed during the cooler months of Florida in the winter and dry season. Be sure to check hunt dates before hiking some of these sections. Enjoy the adventure and thank you for coming along!

Back in 1972, two friends and I took a canoe trip from the bridge at Reedy Lake, down Reedy Creek to Lake Arbuckle. We were all from Frostproof, so this was a local trip. It was amazing to follow the winding creek between high bluffs on either side. At one time in the distant past, after times of extreme rainfall, instead of a winding creek, this was a wide, roaring river. Crooked Lake is 119'MSL, Clinch Lake is at about 100'MSL, Reedy Lake is about 80'MSL, Arbuckle Lake is about 52' MSL, and (Lake Kissimmee is about 50' MSL), Lake Okechobee is 12-15' MSL. All these lakes drain into each other in a chain from Central Florida into the Everglades.

That top cage welded to the headache rack on thst truck looks like it could be repourposed into a hunting platform lol. 😅 possibly the original use, until what looks like a tree smashed it into a trailmarker!

Beautiful area. It appears you were northwest of Lake Arbuckle. You might also enjoy the Carter Creek portion of the lake Wales Ridge Forest off of Riverdale Rd. in Sebring-Avon Park. In early April you will find the Pygmy Fringe Tree, found nowhere else on Earth.
