This made me cry. I was about 14-15 yrs old when I first heard this in around 1982-83, I will never, ever not be blown away by it. Every time I hear Eruption I'm that teenage boy trying to find my way in life. 😪
Loving these comments. They show how much EVH fans appreciated good musicianship, and the incredible impact Eddie had on people's lives. The single greatest guitar player in history.
After he pointed it out in a video I saw of him, I went back and listened at slower speeds. I can barely register what he calls "sloppy as hell". It's there, but it isn't sloppy. At full-speed it's virtually imperceptible. Just shows what a perfectionist he could be.
I think I know what it is, it always kinda struck me as well hearing it but I thought it was intentional. At around 1:10 he starts getting tongue twisted and plays the tapping in and descending pattern instead of ascending and stumbles for a note when he changes position upwards, then he corrects himself into an ascending pattern again. That usually happens when you try to play something super fast, he was really putting everything out there with this. Actually quite fascinating so he plays that last chord half descending and half ascending
I was a freshman in high school when I first heard this, back in 1978. I was totally blown away. The whole album was amazing. I never heard a guitar that sounded as good.. Not only because of the playing, but the tone. All metal guitarist used EVH's sound as their template.
The first time I heard this was in 1978 at my high school track and field day. I didn't want to run the 800 meter, especially against Glen, a new kid who was a total jock and everyone expected would drop me in a second. Sometimes, just sometimes amazing shit happens. At the exact second we started to run, someone cranked Eruption over the school PA. When that drum intro went off, every hair on my body stood up and I felt a lightning bolt of energy go through my whole body. I just freaked out and started running like there was no tomorrow. When Edward's guitar kicked in, I literally was out of my mind, my legs going faster and faster and faster. For the whole length of the song I was literally flying. After the song ended, I lost all interest and went at a snail's pace and Glen caught me but I didn't care. After crossing the finish line, everyone was shocked. Apparently when Eruption was playing, the other guy was eating my dust. The track coach looked at me in astonishment and said "Andrew, have you considered joining the track team?" I was still totally freaked out and couldn't answer. I just yelled at the students "Who is THAT guitar player?" Coach Costain chimed in again "Take your time, think it over." I blurted "What song is this? Who is this band?" The coach was going to say something again but only then replied and said "Thanks coach. Sure, I'll think about it." After a friend came up to me and said "That's Van Halen man!" Fast forward to now I still get goosebumps hearing this. There are so many great musicians but there is only one Edward Van Halen.
F×cking hell! That just made the hair on my neck stand up! That is the most amazing thing I've ever heard, since i heard the record for the first time. Hats off to you, sir! Subbed xx
It's very difficult to describe in words what this did to me as someone who was learning to play Rock guitar when I first heard this in 1978. Kind of surprised i Continued going on with the guitar? I felt defeated as well as inspired at the same time!
The vindication when the older generation would say “you kids don’t know real music.” And then you play this. Talk about a mic drop. Hendrix? Pretty cool. Eddie? Reinvented cool, the guitar and rock and roll, forever!
Can you imagine a rock off with randy Rhoads Jimmy hendrix dimebag Darrel Eddie van Halen and Steve Val and lemmy kilmister fucking epic the rock gods would step down from the throne to bow to those amazing gods of Rock

This still blows my mind as much as it did when I first heard it. Even all these years later all I can say is WOW!
Yep

Absolutely incredible, like hearing it for the first time again.
He always said there is a mistake in the high end that drove him crazy. I still have no idea where it is.

That's because his mistakes were better than a normal guitar players best playing.
If he knew he was recording "Eruption" he would have done another take, but he was just warming up and the engineer decided to roll tape.
Its at 1:11

Absolutely fuckin insane!!!
No one will ever match the intensity of a young inspired Edward van Halen 😮💨
Eruption was actually warm up routines he used and eventually strung a bunch of things together to create this masterpiece
Crazy how the normal 'spikey' transients don't exist in his tone. So incredible
Unreal! How did you get this?🤘🤘🤘
Thanks man! These raw tracks are even better than the isolated tracks! Would you be able to do I'm the One next?
My generations Mozart
No doubt..
