"Civil War Diary" / "Across Five Aprils" (1990) - Civil War book adaptation

Small screen adaption of the Newberry Prize winning book "Across Five Aprils" by Irene Hunt - a beloved children's book from the 1960's that tells the story of a boy and his family during the Civil War. Jethro is a ten year old boy who's family is divided by the war with one brother going to fight for the Confederacy, while the others fight for the Union. It is a great story full of insight and makes one think about how to deal with such differences.
The novel was adapted to screen here by Kevin Meyer and starred Todd Duffey and Miriam Byrd-Nethery. Originally filmed in Blue Springs, Missouri and released on April 27, 1990.

People complaining it was low budget, for a movie that was a TV movie and was low budget, is like complaining water is wet. Not every movie has to cost billions and nor should it. The movie is compelling and a good watch. There are flaws in it, like every movie (same boy plays 10-14 years old - that's a stretch, hair styles right out of 1990 - typical, farmer's wearing sparkling white shirts while plowing, etc.) but the story is solid and acting is fine. It's the kind of movie we watched in school after reading the book. It's enjoyable.
