Circle hooks are getting very popular for freshwater fishing, too. I like them for blue cats, but I've seen anglers use them for bass. I don't worry about harming catfish. I release catfish about two days after I eat them.
Had a captain out of GA take us out years ago. MONSTER 40"+ reds. Gut hooked and however hooked. On the way back in a 40 and 42 were freshly floating on the surface. Wish he would have had those hooks. They were out and tournament approved then. I gave him my opinion along with the tip.

Circle hooks are awesome!!! I have never had a catfish swallow a hook because of circle hooks. On top of that, I debarb all of my hooks. Also, while fishing for catfish, I have accidentally caught some turtles, but thanks to the circle hook, I caught all of them on the side of their mouths, and using a long needle-nose, the hook came right out.

I have always fished circles and I love them. Only time I don't fish circles is when I am tossing lures. And those circles work wonders on my Okuma's with the baitfeeder microdrag. Click it up set it mid-way sit down take a relaxing seat till you hear it running. Count to 3 and then reel in and kick it to front drag, feel the thud, and tada!!!!! Pull in the fish and look at that magical hook right at the corner of the lip. P.S. usually works great even for stingray.

When a strike is detected and you know a fish is swimming off with your bait, lock and reel slowly and steadily until the line comes tight. Once ALL of the slack is out of line, slowly lift the rod tip and enjoy the fight! Capt Mike

+Hassan Saeed Circle hooks have certainly increased in popularity and are an excellent choice for most species/venues. Circle hooks are also required in certain scenarios, including when fishing in the Gulf of Mexico with live bait and when tournament sail fishing. When deep dropping we only use circle hooks as well. - Capt Mike
With circle hooks there is no rearing back to drive the hook home. With a circle hook, once you get a bite simply reel tight and get all of the slack out of the line. As you come tight, the circle hook will turn in the fish's mouth and grab on the corner of the mouth every time! - Capt Mike
Very nice vid, thanks for sharing. but I had one question: If I use a dropper loop knot with a circle hook, should I use a straight eye circle hook or a bent eye? and should the line come in from behind or the front of the hook. Hi Jose, king mackerel Im assuming? If so, circle hook should be based on size of bait and size of fish, 5/0 to 7/0 for smaller baits and fish, and 7/0 - 9/0 for larger baits and fish. However, we've always had better success hooking kings with j-hooks due to the unique shape of their toothy mouths. Circle hooks will work for sure, but if you're specifically targeting king mackerel for the fish box, try J-hooks. I like the VMC #7199 and the VMC #7265, either in size 7/0. - Capt Mike

vmc are the best, i use them for my snelled top keaper hook and a black magic DX bottom hook on a pennel trace pulley rig for surfcasting, dx are incredibly sharp and work like a circle hook
none of the hooks shown are circle hooks despite the name on the package. a circle hook is not a J hook with a circular loop at the bottom. with an offset circle hook, the fish sets the hook its self.
