Old lady reader here. I have followed the Booker prize for 30+ years and what a change there has been in ways to be informed about it! Before the WWW i had to find one of the big newspapers in the US (NYT) to find news on it and ordering the books was nearly impossible.
What a wonderful change you and several other BT's and web forums have made in my Booker reading life! This next month it will be a full time job (luckily i am retired from real job) to at least sample all the eligible novels, read as many as possible, and enjoy others' viewpoints and reviews. THANKS and I particularly enjoyed your methods in the video. Happy reading! 📚📕🥰

Loved this. My favourite read of the year so far is The Offing. I love Benjamin Myers now and have 3 of his books on my shelf to read. I am currently reading In Memorium and I will be surprised if it isn’t my favourite book this year. It has that something special I haven’t felt for ages. I had a TBR at the start of the year that hasn’t been touched as so many great books are been released. Glad to see Verghese on your list. His first book sits on my all time favourites shelf. So many great books!

I love seeing a black woman chair the judges too, I think the Booker has reacted to the Women's Prize calling them out for being sexist and have made some really positive steps to improve their diversity, still a long way from perfect, but moving in a very nice direction.

I have some of these on order from the library already. I think I'll read just what appeals, then see what makes the shortlist. I keep reading longlist books I'm not that interested in, and then think what was the point of they don't make the shortlist!

Very convincing arguments you've put forward for these being the nominees. I've only read Birnam Wood and Wandering Souls. Birnam Wood I'm hoping will be on it. Wandering Souls is a good book but nothing really screams Booker about it to me. You've convinced me to read In Memoriam. The Covenant of Water is on my radar, on my reserve list at the library actually. I really want Praiseworthy by Alexis Wright to be included, but I'm yet to read it.

Interesting... I haven't been that interested in birnam wood because the cover doesn't appeal to me much and I heard the shakespeare link was tenous as you mentioned. But you're enjoying it which makes me think twice. Other than wandering souls, none of these predictions are quite books that I would read... which sounds about right for the booker prize so I think you're spot on 😂 I just don't read this kind of historical fiction much like a lot of these. I have a feeling Winn is going to win too. I feel like with the love that book is getting from so many people, it kind of already deserves it 😌

    • @GunpowderFictionPlot
      @GunpowderFictionPlot  11 месяцев назад +1

Birnam Wood will be one of my favourites this year, the Shakespeare link is just a nice reference really, that's it. It's not the normal kind of literary fiction you go for and it is a little on the thriller side too; but there are other things in it I think you might like. Honestly not sure if you would enjoy it, but she's done what she wanted really well.
I have read Enter Ghost now and that Shakespeare link is not tenuous at all.
Winn is getting so much love, honestly it's not a surprise that book is very well executed.

Cuddy is good. The form of writing changes along with the time periods, it’s clever. It’s a bit religious but more about how people in the different time periods experience that rather than promoting religion. I don’t know if that makes sense but I expect to see it on the Booker longlist.

Thank you for the information on Cuddy. I had my library hold come in between filming and editing and DNFed it because the first section was beautifully written, but too much for me. I've put a hold back on it as soon as I read your comment, I assumed the style was constant all the way through, I'm clearly wrong and I'm even more excited to read it now and regretting returning it so efficiently, as there is a queue.

@@GunpowderFictionPlot There are 4 or 5 different time periods and the writing reflects that. For example there's a 1827 section which is written like literature of that time, and the last is a contemporary narrative (probably not the correct thing to say but you could try the last two sections before deciding to return to prior sections). But now I'll feel responsible if you try it again and still don't get on with it. LOL.

Bournville does seem to be one of the least popular choices here. It might not be his best book, but I think it's better than a few of the novels to make it last year, so I still think it's possible. If I had my time again I might have replaced it with House of Doors.in my predictions.
I hope you love In Memoriam.

The film Pride wonderfully captures the support the LGBTQ community gave to the miners strike. It's one of my favourite films. I've seen quite a few times. Very heartwarming, emotional and funny.

Ooo, I think Nelle watched that film a while ago and told me about it, I might have to watch it later because that story is just happiness and flipping the bird at conservative.

I keep forgetting that Robert Webb is a judge 😂
    Neon Roses sounds amazing!
I'd really like to hear more predictions from you of lesser known books 😊

He seems like such a weird choice, especially as he never plays anybody bookish in his acting, but apparently he's super bookish.
Neon Rose sounds like such a good read.

If In Memoriam wins I’m boycotting The Booker for the rest of eternity.

Really interesting list, and cool analysis of the judges.
Half hoping the Verghese is nominated just so I have an excuse to buy that very, very pretty book.
Soldier, Sailor is genuinely fantastic - one of the best books I’ve read this year. Don’t know if I’ve completely missed something though, but I didn’t read it as a suicide note. Just a letter from a mother to her son.
    Not long to go! 🥹

I probably have Soldier Sailor wrong, I haven't read it yet, I just combed through some reviews and who knows if they were accurate or if I got muddled with all the books I was looking up at once.
I'm sure there will be a nice hard back with sprayed edges or something similar of the Verghese, they always look stunning, but I never want to read them, just admire them lest I break the spine is something.
