Depending on who was at the reigns of a remake, a new version of this show would either be the best thing ever or the cringiest.
A remake would only work if NOTHING was added or removed. I.E inserting jokes and politics and "standards" of today should not be done.

Some of the common sense can be thrown out the window. The best example is Ryoga being a pig. If Akane cares so much for Ryoga because she did not know he fell in the spring, she would have given him a bath where she would have found out. Genma even went into a bathtub where Soun was bathing.

There's nothing wrong with being proud to be male - so long as that pride doesn't lead you to think less of females. And vice-versa. Women should also be proud to be women. Be comfortable in your own skin.
Whilst I don't disagree with the sentiment, "You should be proud of your gender" and being comfortable in your own skin relies on that I don't think are true. I'm comfortable and proud of other aspects of myself, but my attitude towards my gender is rather blazé.
That's the thing. Quite often people aren't conformable in their own gender skin and the rest of us should give them the space to find what they are comfortable being

The fact you decide to do an anime and it’s one a lot of people don’t know about, thank you! I do argue the Manga explores more gender dynamics.
And I do find it interesting that this show/manga was created by a woman who was raised in a very traditional post-war Japan, Rumiko Takahashi-sensei truly has a unique view, and to be honest, if Ranma had a male author in no way shape, or form his female form would act the way that he does.
And we do have something interesting with Akane, she is a very tomboy girl that is trying her best to be more feminine, by emulating her older sister, who she thinks it's the embodiment of the perfect woman.
Wasn't Akane only imitating her oldest sister because she had a thing for a doctor?
@@Neku628 she had a crush, but her sister and the doctor were already in love, but at the same time Akane was the tomboy girl trying to be a feminine woman, and her oldest sister was what she had as an example of what society sees as a “perfect wife“.
The Doctor is just a plot convenience, her first main arc is accepting that it's okay to be a tomboy girl, and it's actually what made her closer to Ranma and I do think it's the reason they end up together, he has to be less sexist and she too has to learn that she can be tomboyish and feminine at the same time.

It’s not surprising the show didn’t tackle gender very much. Back then, especially in Japan, the modern western understanding of gender wasn’t exactly well known or respected
The modern western understanding is fake though. The modern western understanding is just some crap that is being pushed by the leftwing media as well as certain groups. It is not respected or liked by most people despite what media is trying to tell you.

The "modern western understanding" is trash (along with most of everything else cooked up by the loons, which the Japanese, Chinese, and now even Europe make fun of)... Japanese creators are more concerned with creating interesting characters, story.. Creativity.. Whereas in the west today, are more concerned with trying to sell propaganda, focusing on race, gender, and sexuality, not the CHARACTER, not story... This is why western comics, animation, and most movies today....Are trash.
Any argument that Ranma "accepts" his Jusenkyo curse is undermined by the fact that Ranma never, EVER stops hoping to remove it. When even the slightest chance of obtaining a cure pops up, Ranma jumps after it, no matter how ridiculous or dangerous the situation may require him to put himself through. In the manga, he literally abandons Akane at the altar to try and steal the Jusenkyo cure he would have received anyway if he'd gone through with the marriage ceremony.
I think "accepts" is probably a strong word for the reason you say. But all of the characters grew to appreciate the upsides of their curses as a potentially-useful part of themselves as the series progressed, Ranma being no exception.
There was an Ep when he went back to time to prevent the curse

Did you mean obscure ironically? I haven't actually read/watched much Rumiko Takahashi stuff but I always thought of her early stuff (Urusei Yatsura , Ranma 1/2, and Inuyasha) as classics and I've been hearing about it most of my life.
Yeah because that Rinnie series was basically if Ranma and Inuyasha had a love child with bleach
I think it may have not been a joke since outside of InuYasha eventhough Ranma 1/2 as of march 2021 has sold more copies then My Hero Academia(including the spin offs) with 53 million cpies sold as of 2015. It's really not talked as much as one might expect such a significant series would be discussed. I imagine part of it's just it's old, has a lot of questionable stuff and hasn't received an anime going over it again which the other very significant shonen martial arts show that came out around the same time Dragon Ball Z has.
It has to be a joke Ranma is the most famous gender switching mangas. It is a classic and it is still in print.
Same here, honestly this was one of those animes that was so prevalent that even my local library had this stuff.
It's obscure to a lot of modern young anime fans in the West at least, especially if they haven't dived into older series as much yet. But otherwise I agree, these series are still considered classics.

American kids yeah. Japanese kids are just fine.
If I were cursed to turn into a woman just by a splash of water I'd be into it
I'm glad someone else noticed how Ranma's curse was basically a way for him to pay a retaliation for his excessive pride, and for him to experience the other side of the world's viewpoint, so that he can mature, and become a better person in the middle. It's a theme that gets rarely touched upon, nor even in the original manga, i may add

I have a little bit of an issue on calling Ranma 1/2 obscure. I suppose if you ask the average anime watcher now what it is it would be much less well known, when it was new it was pretty popular. So less obscure and more simply dated.

Dude I’m in love with you. Thank u so much this si my favorite anime and yet it’s so underrated and not talked about enough!
I love this show so much! Thanks for talking about it!!
Glad you enjoy it!
Honestly Ranma's curse would be quite neat to have.
In real life people don't tend to be splashed with cold water quite as frequently as they do in the show anyway, so it would normally be quite easy to control. The only real issue would be rain.
It's awesome you did a Ranma video. It is a fun show that I don't hear being talked about often. Although it mostly avoids gender concerns, there is still a lot you can analyze from the show (such as Ranma's sometimes toxic masculinity or on characters like Ryoga or Shampoo).
I'd love to see more Ranma Videos! This is fantastic!! What a treat!
My favourite show/books as a tween and I'm not over it yet haha... some things just stick with you somehow...
There's one fundamental misunderstanding in the video: Ranma is actually quite consistent on his feelings towards his female form. He never truly comes to accept it, and would be rid of his curse in a heartbeat given the opportunity.
However, as long as he _has_ the curse, he's 100% willing to make use of it for the advantages society affords attractive young girls. Even in the first season, we can see Ranma willingly adopting his female form and using it to get additional/free food from street vendors. Or, as you pointed out with footage from the Ice Skating episode, to avoid embarrassment in his male form. He's also willing to adopt it to help Akane, as seen in the Rhythmic Gymnastics episode.
These are all there from the start of the show, not a gradual acceptance on the part of Ranma.
He does, however, let his pride get him into scenarios where he has to rely on his female form. One of the quotes you showed was Ranma stating he can win at anything with "Martial Arts" in the name. This pride causes him to accept challenges that aren't technically available to him as a man, and so he'll put up with using his female form in order to participate _just_ _to_ _prove_ _he_ _can_ _win._ But again, this is just him _using_ his female form, not accepting it.
The same applies to when he threw on the bunny girl outfit as a girl in order to sell Okonomiyaki. Because one other thing Ranma is prideful about is not just his Martial Arts ability, but his appearance in *both* of his forms. So he ignored his usual hesitation at dressing up like a girl _just_ to prove he was hotter.
Basically, anything that appears to be Ranma accepting his female form in the anime is only confusing it with him being prideful, because he has the internal belief that he's the hottest thing on the market no matter what form he's in.
This is, also, btw, why he becomes upset when one of the girl's lose interest in him. While the series does show him having secret feelings for Akane, for the others it's just a way for him to confirm his belief in his own attractiveness. It's pretty despicable, since he's just leading them on, but it really is just him liking the attention.
As for a remake or additional content… I don’t want that to happen. Modern culture would tear Ranma to shreds. Even Kasumi, the most unassuming and least problem character in the show is “problematic” by todays standards and wouldn’t be allowed. Why? Because she wants to be a traditional housewife. That isn’t allowed today, you can’t show that. Twitter would lose their minds.
This isn’t even mentioning the bigger problem characters like Nabiki (for taking nude pictures of unconscious female Ranma and selling them without consent) or Happosai.
Very well put. The only thing I disagree with is "Modern culture would tear Ranma to shreds". I used to think that until I saw the Crash Bandicoot remake KEEP Papu Papu...a character that more than a few people thought was a racist stereotype. Nothing was changed...and no one cared. There are plenty of cases where creators keep their creative integrity rather than conforming to societies standards.
I don't think Kasumi has to be changed at all. If anything I think keeping her the same could show that being a traditional housewife doesn't mean you're lazy, unintelligent, or dependent.
Nabiki would probably be idolized for being a strong independent woman that doesn't need a man and takes whatever she wants. Things like the nude photos could easily be substituted for something else. After all, she only did it to manipulate Kuno iirc.
I've always hated Happosai. Not because of the pervy stuff, moreso because he's a main character. Every time he's on screen I just cringe! I never found him funny or interesting in the slightest. The series was fine without him...but if we really want to keep him then just keep his screen time to a minimum and don't just treat his pervy antics like a joke.
I genuinely believe a Ranma remake could be great if handled by the right people. And no, it doesn't have to be political. It could still just be a fun anime.
@@JayniacJr Thank you, hopefully it didn’t come off as too harsh. I was pretty blunt without thinking about it.
Anyhow, true, the nudes Nabiki took _could_ be substituted, but then that’s changing something to appease the (potential) mob. That’s the opposite of what fans want. Besides, she was doing it (a lot more than shown) to profit off of Kuno’s obsession with Akane and Girl-type Ranma, not really manipulate him.
Otherwise you might be right about her being idolized, but I could see it going the other way as well, people complaining about her being a negative stereotype of all women being gold-diggers.
But ultimately, there’s no way to really know what the angry mob will complain about or defend until it happens. Personally, I just don’t want to see the risk taken. And being realistic, despite the longevity of the fanbase’s passion, Inu Yasha is Takahashi Rumiko’s most popular work. That’s why Yashahime exists and the last Ranma content produced was the 2008 special.
As far as hated characters though… the fucking Principal is *easily* the worst.

If you made more Ranma analysis videos, I'd def watch them! This was a good analysis. Being how old the Ranma series is, there's a few things in it that would be seen negatively nowadays and talking about gender can be a difficult subject to navigate. It can be very easy to mix up certain terms and concepts. But you handled it all well.
That's because things get offended over anything and everything today. Also, people are wrong about gender and sex when they talk about intersexuality etc, so when they see something that doesn't conform to heir beliefs, it is only natural that they would take offense.
When I was a kid, I loved watching Ranma 1/2. The idea of turning into a girl or a boy, seemingly at will, was really appealing to me, even before I knew I was trans. Ranma had more fiances than 3 his dad selled him left abd right
Great character study
Glad for analysis of this anime I loved growing up and want to hear more thoughts on it
Unpopular opinion, male ranma is a really good character and i really enjoyed his masculine vibe.
Great video, definitely the tip of the iceberg on the sociology of gender. Loved watching Ranma 1/2 I wish it had a better ending.
Bro i loved this video so much i cant explain
PLEASE MAKE AN ENTIRE VIDEO ABOUT AKANE. Shes such an interesting character!
I'd probably talk about Ukyo or Ryoga before Akane.
Ty this makes me want to watch this anime, I'm actually excited 😆
This anime was the very first anime I watched in full, so this video means more to me than it would so others
Please do more Ranma videos. I love that series.
Love Ranma💕
This is one anime power that I want as a kid
Ah, classic anime are so fun!
I've never heard of this before, but you're video was very interesting, plus as a not cis person this was intriguing lol
I remember this manga and anime. I have liked this ever sense I read it in highschool.
I would love to have a reboot to this anime.
Same
sadly only 80 episodes are available (minus that one episode that happens to be the first part of a storyline across two episodes, that is banned for some reason)in my first language and the voiceacting is so well done, that the english version cant keep up and is just dissapointing...
to add to that the voiceactor for ranmas male half has sadly passed away so there is zero chance of more episodes...
Super happy your talking about a anime.
One of my favorite animes
One of my favorite anime's from a bygone era
Can you do Yu Yu Hakusho next? I guess Yuseke since he’s the main/most complex.
There's Ranma 1/2 fighting game back in the 90 for Super Famicon. I have it! And in fact I think there are several games released under for this anime/manga.
I love the manga and for me, a woman, Ranma-girl is a role-model: funny, strong, kindhearted and sly as fox. He/she never gives up and uses his/her skill and brain to win the battle. Actually, I like Ranma being rude with girls, because there are many times when female characters manipulate him with ostentatious weakness and rules that guy should not beat a girl. That is why Akane feels so annoying. She wants to be as good fighter as Ranma, but she always has to be saved from fight she stupidly begins. She can't stand a chance with Shanpoo and Ucchan. She is so irrational and toxic towards Ranma.
I really was watching this show at 9 omg😭
2:18 I don't think he's overly proud about manliness. He's just emphasizing it because his curse has caused him to develop a complex so he'd feel the need to assert and make sure everyone knows he's a guy
I LOVE RANMA ❤❤❤❤❤
I don’t know why but your intro song is catchy
This a high quality video
"This show's not for kids"
Spacetoon: :/
Censored hard
Pleeeease make more ranma analysis videos :0
I love this anime and it's all episode
Its weird to see how different the anime looks from the manga, did they skip over the cursed pools entirely?
Can u also do Inuyasha sometime? :)
