- Google Earth Studio tour of Naval Air Facility Atsugi in Ayase, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. Google Earth imagery as of April 18, 2020.
At 1,249 acres, it is the largest U.S. Navy air base in the Pacific. NAF Atsugi is a shared-use installation with units of the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force. Built in 1938, Atsugi was a formidable fighter base for the Imperial Japanese Navy during World War II and was largely destroyed by war's end. On August 30, 1945, Gen. Douglas MacArthur landed at Atsugi to accept Japan's surrender. In 1950, the Seabees began preparing it for re-opening as Naval Air Station Atsugi. It was re-designated a Naval Air Facility in 1971.

Awww I grew up here from 1998-2002. We then move to Yokosuka until 2005. ❤️🇯🇵
Was there from 01 to 04 we definitely know each other
Lived here for 13 out of my 25 years in the Navy with CAG-5. Last time I was in Atsugi was 2016. Great memories.
Great memories, really? Didn't like it there. The culture. No one spoke English. Didn't think they treated Navy correctly, at lest when I was there in late sixties.
I lived there as a brat then as USN from 1976-1987 funny how from bootcamp San Diego went right back there. Mom still lives just off base there now.
I remember master chief kolacosi with CAG-5 when I was there with VFA-192 The Golden Dragons. The only person I ever saw that the officers were afraid of.
Man, the changes are something else (so many). Almost unrecognizable from when I was there in 85-87. So many things gone, that I remember.
Was there when I was young but I did notice that the housing had changed a lot (lived right behind Shirley Lanham) and some others I was too young to remember.
Thank you. I didn't want the video to end. Stationed there 2004-2008. VFA-27 Royal Maces. I needed this. There is so many memories there, I wish I could go back there and live in a time loop. Life there forward deployed if so fast paced you can never stop and smell the roses.
I was with VF-161 and VFA-195 from the USS Midway. Atsugi was a great base to be stationed on when coming back from deployment
Loved it! I was stationed there from 1989-91, VAQ-136... Thanks for the virtual visit!
Thank you for sharing this video with us. It was good to see Atsugi again. I noticed that the mini mart & post office have moved. I have many great memories of Atsugi.
I was stationed at Kami Seya from 88-90, spent many great times at Atsugi and Camp Zama, Bon Odori's, Friendship park outside back gate, first time I played golf was here. Hope to return one day.
Thank you so much for making this video. We were stationed here and we just recently moved back to states. I miss Atsugi very much!!!!
Marine Barracks Japan Atsugi Detachment 88-90. In those 18 months, I ran around Atsugi countless times during PT.
I was there over 50 years ago, it looks so different now.
Very nostalgic. Music is a little melancholy which sort of goes with my feelings on seeing the base again. I so enjoyed my time in Japan. I was at Kami Seya from 88-91 but frequently got over to NAF Atsugi
My number One duty station.
Beautifully done! So many memories from almost 40 years ago now.
Stained there from 2013-2015 HSM-77. My favorite duty station.
1981-83 VA-115, 1987-89 VA-185. Had my Harley There when in VA-185. Many of us in !85 shipped motorcycles there when squadron moved there. Nice to see the country on my motorcycle.
Stationed here from 1998-2001. GEMD- AirOps. Good times.
Went there twice, I think. Only went as far as the Navy Exchange. Don't remember what I went there for the first time, but had to sponsor a vendor the second time for a coffee sampling session. I knew where the Navy Exchange was, so I must been there before, but for what, and it is a lot bigger than I thought! Still, I really enjoyed Yokosuka, even though I didn't take advantage of the ocean that much!
I grew up here for 4 years left at 2018
i just drew a total blank. arrived there in January 1968 but cant recall how we got there. i was assinged to VRC 50
Thank you for sharing. My dad was stationed there from 1986-1989 and I attended at Shirley Lanham. I can see our old place across the street from Ranger Park and there was a skating ring down the street and hanging out at the youth center. I also remember McDonald's held a bingo night and we would received a whole month of selected food(Big Mac, Teriyaki Burger, Chicken Nuggets etc as prizes. Gosh... Can't believe how the Atsugi has changed throughout the years, I really miss living in Japan. Had a lot of memories and made friends, and we're still friends to this day! By the way, is that sacred tree still there by the runaway?
Stationed there '73 & '74 with MAG 36 SU#2, Had a great time.
Awesome thank you so much.
Looks like that "haunted" tree is gone. Too bad :(
looks a lot different than when i arrived there 53 years ago. imagine the old ww2 barricks were torn down long time ago'. wonder if the old tunnel entrances were closed off. there were tunnels going to every city ajoining the base at one time. was rumored that there was also an underground basee at one time
The barracks were torn down while I was there. Funny thing was they found a case of hand grenades hidden in the wall and the pins were just about rusted through.
I was there from’92 - ‘97 and they torn down a few with only barracks 3 still there…. If I remember the number correctly…..
I was in barracks 47 and 50, from 84-88, the bullhead were so weak I poked a hole in the bulkhead with my finger trying to smash a bug in my barracks room
The quanset hut is Lee Harvey Oswalds old radar tracking scope dope hut
I lived in Japan for 10 years I was on Atsugi Base I was the Base Police
I was there from 89-99 Love Atsugi Base my house was located in Zama Shi between Camp Zama and Atsugi
I was there during that time, who was your watch commander around 92-96
For a moment, I felt like an eagle.... Not the F 15, but a real one, with feathers and mean looks, in search of a fat rabbit or even a tiny lamb, but then forgetting all about it, while beautiful music is flowing into my ears.... Wait a minute.... Do eagles have ears ? And headphones ? Hmmm, maybe I better stay human for a while, and enjoy the views here on RUclips. Great choice of music ! (what is the name of that piece of music ?) Odd to think Lee Harvey Oswald was stationed here for a while. I wonder what happened with the "Queen Bee club" :0)
Music from the 1966 Steve McQueen movie "The Sand Pebbles" by Jerry Goldsmith. Thanks for commenting!
I live in my own world in Japan too.
