Unfinished Arch - East Bayfront’s Destination Art Piece

  • On April 4, 2024, Waterfront Toronto announced Unfinished Arch by Rafael Lozano-Hemmer was selected as the “Destination Art Piece” for East Bayfront. Unfinished Arch will be a permanent installation at the foot of Sherbourne Common. This video explores the inspiration behind the artwork, how it fits into the larger East Bayfront Public Art Master Plan, and the importance of public art in creating complete communities.     I hope the sensors aren’t capacitive (like a smartphone’s touchscreen), otherwise it wouldn’t work if someone’s wearing mittens or if someone has an incompatible prosthetic.

    Love the concept but how does the one touching the beam experience the art piece if their head will be buried/obstructed behind it?

      At 3:05 in the video, the artist explains the intention is for the piece to be memorable by capturing the participation and experience through a photograph.

      @@WaterfrontToronto I imagine that the actual experience for the participant will mostly be haptic: they will "feel" the weight of the arch which will sway ever so slightly with their pressure.
