    4 controversies in this game:
    1. Martin Sneddon’s catch of Greg Chappell when he was on 58. Sneddon clearly catches the ball above the ground, however the umpires deems it not out. Chappell went on to score 90.
    2. Richard Hadlee’s LBW. Shocking call from the umpire as the ball is clearly pitched outside leg stump
    3. Dennis Lillee was not in position when the final ball was bowled, so Australia had too many fielders outside the ring, meaning it should’ve been a no-ball.
    4. The underarm ball
    NZ were absolutely robbed in this game

      It wasn't Trevor's Chappell's fault. You can actually see both in the video and on Wikipedia that it was under orders from Greg, the captain and his older brother, who informed the umpire and the batsmen that he was going to do it (check their reactions). Even Ian (the eldest brother) remains critical of that decision.

  • @nunuloki
    @nunuloki 10 лет назад +6

    In 1981 one-day cricket was a relatively new sport and crowds had not seen many close finishes like that, especially in internationals. Underarm bowling was not actually illegal, it is just that nobody did it as it was considered unfair. Greg Chappell made a decision based on "win at all costs". He said in later years that he regretted it but. New Zealanders have never fully forgiven him for it. Brian McKechnie got his revenge years later in a joke during a charity match in which he produced a bowling ball and rolled it to Chappell who was batting. For the record I am a New Zealander. We were pretty angry about it at the time, but now it is simply a bit of history.

    I'm American and I know cricket very well. Been watching the sport for about 4 years. As for this bullshit, this is the most despicable and most controversial moment in sports history. WTF the Chappell brothers was thinking? They were thinking about cheating by using underarm bowling that the early cricketers used in the 1700s to mid 1800s. The rulebook stated that underarm bowling can't be used. Why the umpire won't give Trevor Chappell's underarm bowling a no bowl? If I were the damn umpire in this match, I would've give him a no ball. The umpire was very stupid and they didn't know the rule of underarm bowling being banned in cricket.

      Listen to Richie Benaud's comments at the end of the video. The amendment to the law specifically outlawing underarm bowling hadn't been made for this series. It was an oversight that was corrected the following day.
      Was this incident unsportsmanlike and unethical, Yes !
      But technically it wasn't cheating, otherwise the umpires wouldn't have allowed it to happen.

    It is time to put a few things straight here. As a Kiwi living here in Oz I can say that the Australians were entitled to bowl the under arm delivery as it was in the rules. Was it ethical to do so - probably not. Did Greg Chappell regret it - Yes. Did he pay for it - yes. His photo is not shown in the long room in the MCC Member room and his businesses were never successful. Did it offend many Australians - unequivocally - yes especially Victorians. Was the worst decision in the match - No. Greg Chappell while on 35 was caught by Martin Snedden but given not out. He went on the make 89 odd!! Why because the umpires Weiser and Cronin claim they were not watching the catch!! Also take into consideration Sir Richard Hadlee's really poor dismissal The Australians made sure they never umpired another test or one day match again after this. This incident took the gloss off Bruce Edgars great century as well - but it is a long time in the past and it will never happen again. We should all move on

    The whole point is that the Kiwis probably wouldn't have won anyway and that just makes the offence even worse. Total lack of respect for sportsmanship. Truly revealing of the Aussie character (or lack there of most likely).

      Dude not all Australians are assholes. Listen to the crowd after the ball is bowled. They're booing. They wanted the game to end in a respecful way but obviously Chappell had to fuck,it up

      Even with a six it would only have tied the game.

      Meh heh Fair point but read some of the posts here from Aussies... kinda reinforces the stereotype.

    Now "Bairstow-gate" to add to the Aussies long list of disgraceful behaviour on the Cricket field.
