In 1981 one-day cricket was a relatively new sport and crowds had not seen many close finishes like that, especially in internationals. Underarm bowling was not actually illegal, it is just that nobody did it as it was considered unfair. Greg Chappell made a decision based on "win at all costs". He said in later years that he regretted it but. New Zealanders have never fully forgiven him for it. Brian McKechnie got his revenge years later in a joke during a charity match in which he produced a bowling ball and rolled it to Chappell who was batting. For the record I am a New Zealander. We were pretty angry about it at the time, but now it is simply a bit of history.
I was born in New Zealand so obviously grew up supporting our team, but I always enjoyed Richie's commentary, he was a real gentleman. Re this incident, I think it's important to realise that quite a few of the Aussie players on the day didn't agree with the decision to bowl the underarm. You can see Geoff Marsh in particular looking quite embarrassed about it, but you can't argue with the skipper in these situations.
You could argue then they had the wrong player as captain. In the rules of the game it is the responsibility of the captain to ensure his players not only adhere to the rules but also that they play within the spirit of the game.
I'm Aussie and I was about 10 years old when this happened watching the game with my dad on tv. I couldn't understand when I was 10 how someone could do something so low to win a game in any sport and now I'm 41...I still don't understand.
I'm American and I know cricket very well. Been watching the sport for about 4 years. As for this bullshit, this is the most despicable and most controversial moment in sports history. WTF the Chappell brothers was thinking? They were thinking about cheating by using underarm bowling that the early cricketers used in the 1700s to mid 1800s. The rulebook stated that underarm bowling can't be used. Why the umpire won't give Trevor Chappell's underarm bowling a no bowl? If I were the damn umpire in this match, I would've give him a no ball. The umpire was very stupid and they didn't know the rule of underarm bowling being banned in cricket.
Sorry, but you're wrong ! Listen to Richie Benaud's comments at the end of the video. The amendment to the law specifically outlawing underarm bowling hadn't been made for this series. It was an oversight that was corrected the following day. Was this incident unsportsmanlike and unethical, Yes ! But technically it wasn't cheating, otherwise the umpires wouldn't have allowed it to happen.
Underarm bowling was made illegal because of this game. What they did at the time was unsportsmanlike but legal so the umpire had no grounds to stop them.
The thing I don’t get is, why people think 1 person who’s nationality happened to be Australian, who did something work gleans the one whole country is bad
Richie Benaud got it dead right with his comments here. Considering that New Zealand could only tie the match at best, unless Trevor Chappell bowled either a wide or a no-ball, why the need to have to bowl an underarm ball in the first place? Did the Chappell brothers really think that Brian McKechnie was going to hit the last ball for a six? Really?
I remember feeling sick to my guts when I saw this when it happened! A 6 needed off the last ball to tie the match, not win it...and what were the odds that the batsman would hit a six? Well we'll never know because the low down bastards never gave him a sporting chance to do it. "The underarm incident" = The day sportsmanship died in Australia.
Ian is a very good man actually, quietly he would have been pissed off with his brother's decision...Greg was weak as piss to order Trevor to bowl that underarm, and Trevor was a compliant little puppet.
And you can bet he let loose a string of profanities about both Chappells off microphone too! Richie was a right character; Debonair on-air, a gentleman off too, but he could swear like a sailor. Also, watch some footage of him as a player and watch him celebrate when he took a wicket - For the late 50s and early 60s he was a serious celebrator. Indians are not known for unsportsmanlike behaviour on the field, and their faults are never swept under the rug.
Not sure that was even the worst thing Greg Chappell did during the match... Snedden held a great running, low catch, but Chappell refused to accept the player's word. The umpires "did not see it" as they were "looking for short runs", so NZ's appeals were unanswered. Chappell (G) had scored 52 at the time, and got 90.
Richie Benaud was a great cricketer and a great commentator and I agree with every word of his summing up of this miserable episode, in which Australia lost far more than she would ever have lost if the New Zealander's had scored six off the last ball.
@@Dietpanda the sandpaper incident, where he pressured a debutant cricketer, Cameron Bancroft, into sanding down one side of the cricket ball during a test against South Africa, in order to give the Aussie bowlers an advantage. Warner and then captain Steve Smith, along with Bancroft, were banned for a year. Bancroft has never played for Australia since.
Only an Australian cricket team would do such a thing. The saddest thing is, the likelihood that the new batsman would hit a 6 on the last ball is quite low and NZ couldn't win the game anyway even if they did.
"why they did it???" It's the Aussie way. As Robert Muldoon said at the time "How appropriate is is that the Australian team was wearing yellow, as it was the biggest act of cowardice I have seen on a sports field."
I'm Australian and still look at this with shame. It's not cheating, but it's not CRICKET. And don't blame all Australians. We disowned it at the time and Greg Chappell went from being a great captain to a complete outcast for telling his brother Trevor to bowl underarm.
Except it's exactly the tactic Bairstow himself, as keeper, had tried not once, but twice already in that very match. What's sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander. @@rw8733
There was no need of an underarm at all. No decent batsman left. And NZ required a 6 for a tie! And it was MCG - so not easy to hit a six anyway. Disgraceful.
Richie's summing up was masterful. He explained the rules of the tournament concisely to the viewers, contrasted them with the UK equivalents, told the administrators that they had better change the rules, spotted that Greg Chappell had got his sums wrong and roundly condemned his actions. He did it calmly, clearly and with no hype. It used to be a pleasure to have analysis like that on the game, even in such awful circumstances. Richie - you are sadly missed.
Trevor Chapple did what his captain and big brother told him to do and paid for it...he never played again while Greg Chapple went onto captain Australia again and again and he become a commenter.....He should have been the one to pay with his career not Trev
Trev's career wasn't cut short because of this. It was cut short because he was rubbish. He was widely recognised as probably the worst selection for Australia in at least a generation well before this match.
Kiwis, 40 years later continuing the delusion that they would have won the match if it wasn't bowled underarm. Aussies were more pissed off about it because every man and his dog knew it wouldn't have gone for 6 and Chappell gave the Kiwis too much respect in thinking they could snag a tie. Kiwis need to give a big thank you to Chappell for giving them at least something to talk about for the past 40 years, and while they continue to do nothing they still have this to talk about for the next 40.
That bowler is even worse than I thought, he doesn't even believe in himself enough to bowl a ball normally. If he was a good bowler, he would have bowled a different speed or bowled a good length bowl that was slightly slower, to catch out the batsman. What an idiot.
It is time to put a few things straight here. As a Kiwi living here in Oz I can say that the Australians were entitled to bowl the under arm delivery as it was in the rules. Was it ethical to do so - probably not. Did Greg Chappell regret it - Yes. Did he pay for it - yes. His photo is not shown in the long room in the MCC Member room and his businesses were never successful. Did it offend many Australians - unequivocally - yes especially Victorians. Was the worst decision in the match - No. Greg Chappell while on 35 was caught by Martin Snedden but given not out. He went on the make 89 odd!! Why because the umpires Weiser and Cronin claim they were not watching the catch!! Also take into consideration Sir Richard Hadlee's really poor dismissal The Australians made sure they never umpired another test or one day match again after this. This incident took the gloss off Bruce Edgars great century as well - but it is a long time in the past and it will never happen again. We should all move on
"but it is a long time in the past and it will never happen again. We should all move on"And that's why you went on at length about it. Cant agree with you on "Hadlee's poor dismissal". That's the definition of plumb lbw. And I'm a Kiwi and a fan of his.
But you don't know in the clauses of tournament or series this under arm bowl was not allowed.Though then not banned by ICC .Still it was prohibited to use .In the series
38 years later, New Zealand get robbed again, this time in a World Cup Final. By the umpires (6 runs awarded instead of 5 on the overthrow) and by the ICC, a legal rule allowing number of boundaries to be used as a tiebreaker.
You are kind of missing the point. In actual fact it was not impossible for Australia to lose, what if the final ball was a no-ball or a wide? There would still have been a chance, albeit a minuscule one but still a chance.
Am I surprised, NO. Australia have always been world champions of cheating sledging and the dark acts . Win at all cost . It's tragic because they didn't need to do it
To be fair, it WAS pretty stupid for the World Series Cricket rules committee not to plug that loophole, especially since it was plugged elsewhere. That being said, for this to happen, Chappell would have had to have been combing the rulebook and filing that oversight away for future use. Still gutless.

As an Australian this was and still is a disgusting thing
The umpire was very stupid and they didn't know the rule of underarm bowling being banned in cricket.
which team are u supporting this wt20 ?! Just curious ..haha
What they did at the time was unsportsmanlike but legal so the umpire had no grounds to stop them.
gnarkillkicksass Thanks. I remembering reading about this game about underarm being official banned after this game.
Shameful! This and the ball tampering fiasco are the lowest moments in Australian cricket
The thing I don’t get is, why people think 1 person who’s nationality happened to be Australian, who did something work gleans the one whole country is bad
Come on Kiwis. We all know Ossies have got no class. Back in the UK we’re all still waiting for them to return to complete their prison sentences.😂
Hadlee was utterly brilliant - and this is coming from an Aussie. I remember watching as a kid.. an amazing bowler, as never dominated, a real pro.
Really?
From under arm to sandpaper, a long tradition of bad sportsmanship.
Oh yeah now I remember what the Chappel brothers were famous for ..... "sportsmanship"
Yeah they went to the same school of sporting etiquette as Brad Haddin.
Famous cheats and crooked captaincy
Ian is a very good man actually, quietly he would have been pissed off with his brother's decision...Greg was weak as piss to order Trevor to bowl that underarm, and Trevor was a compliant little puppet.
Richie's rant at the end is just brilliant and classic.
Anish Advani
You should look up the word “rant” in a dictionary. In no way was it a rant.
Hugo Lindum for Ritchie, it was a big one
And you can bet he let loose a string of profanities about both Chappells off microphone too! Richie was a right character; Debonair on-air, a gentleman off too, but he could swear like a sailor. Also, watch some footage of him as a player and watch him celebrate when he took a wicket - For the late 50s and early 60s he was a serious celebrator.
Source: A guy I knew who worked as a sound tech for Channel Nine, heard Richioe drop many an eff bomb, but only to people who deserved it and only when they deserved it.
RIP Richie, You were part of my childhood mate :)
And then when he says "goodbye" his voice changes.
Richie Benaud was one of the greatest sportsmen and the most knowledgeable and fairest commentators.

Each Indian cricketer involved in corruption has faced a life ban. And you won't find a mention of them among today's youth. They are shunned and ostracized by the public.

@@wutangmuslin Sorry but match-fixing is about a million times worse, than doing something that was frowned upon in 1981. Good try though.
The sporting Aussies, bend the laws when it suits them. Well said Richie.
The absolute worst thing he did during the match was the Coke he snorted between innings. He was a Coke head, well-known fact.
Captain is seen advising Trevor Chappel to bowl underarm...what a shameless aussies
Caption was his brother Greg Chappel, another "great sportsman".
It's hard to say it, but I'm glad Richie Benaud isn't around to see what happened with Bancroft and Smith in South Africa.
Keith Miller is another Aussie great who would have gone totally apoplectic over Smith's tactics.
Well said Richie, that man was respected by everyone.
I don't know whether to dislike it or like it!
It's a good video, but it is a horrible and disgraceful moment, that I really hate it!
Yeah I agree - I didn't like or dislike for the same reason
Richie Benaud was a great cricketer and a great commentator and I agree with every word of his summing up of this miserable episode, in which Australia lost far more than she would ever have lost if the New Zealander's had scored six off the last ball.
Good points, well made by Richie at the end; mind you "canary yellow underarm cheats" is more appropriate.
Richie B was my favourite commentator. I am from England.

"Most disgraceful moment in Cricket History!"
Warner: "Hold my beer"
For?
@@Dietpanda the sandpaper incident, where he pressured a debutant cricketer, Cameron Bancroft, into sanding down one side of the cricket ball during a test against South Africa, in order to give the Aussie bowlers an advantage.
Warner and then captain Steve Smith, along with Bancroft, were banned for a year. Bancroft has never played for Australia since.
Though Nz lost but they always has the utter respect and true sportsmanship.
Full marks to Aussie great Rodney Marsh for his disgust, contempt and sportsmanship shown to the kiwi's on this appalling incident.
Only an Australian cricket team would do such a thing. The saddest thing is, the likelihood that the new batsman would hit a 6 on the last ball is quite low and NZ couldn't win the game anyway even if they did.
why they did it???6 on 1 ball was highly unlikely...trevor was bowling very well...then why so much fear??
easy bro, they're fucking aussies

Dear friend!because he is the great "Greg Chappell "BASTARD .All his own tunes sung SUCCESSFULLY in India only because of THE PUPPET Dravid.
Exactly. As a Brit, we've just had the Bairstow "run out" in the 2023 Ashes. Not cheating, but NOT "cricket."
Except it's exactly the tactic Bairstow himself, as keeper, had tried not once, but twice already in that very match. What's sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander. @@rw8733
This disgrace will never be forgotten and nor should it. Richie is the best though.
There was no need of an underarm at all. No decent batsman left. And NZ required a 6 for a tie! And it was MCG - so not easy to hit a six anyway. Disgraceful.
So there was nothing wrong with bowling the last ball underarm, the batsman was incapable anyway??
D avid Tuer That's not what he meant. He was just reading the situation and it was totally unnecessary. Could have won it even on fair play.
If this happened today, Richie would be getting cancelled by the right for not being patriotic enough and for being too much of an expert.
Well said Richie
Cricket seemed to be more popular back then
4:49~ Greg Chappell actually demonstrating the underarm action.
Not the most disgraceful moment anymore, thanks to Steve Smith.
Not even the most disgraceful moment in the history of Australian cricket.
don't forget the batsman needed a six to win, not one or two, makes even more umbelieviable
***** Well a no ball and a six would have made NZ win. So there are always possibilities. Just my 2 cent.
Actually no. As far as I know it was a 6 to tie the match off the last ball.
Well, a no ball is a "no ball" and has to be bowled again and any runs accruing to the no ball count.
That is PATHETIC. JUST PATHETIC.
Ashwin Mohandas Can't argue there mate......... it was just disgraceful and embarrassing. :/
I thought it was priceless.
Richie Benaud a true aussie legend!
Kiwis have officially been the victims of cricket rules, quite lately now...
thumbs up if you remember watching this live on the tv!
That bowler is even worse than I thought, he doesn't even believe in himself enough to bowl a ball normally. If he was a good bowler, he would have bowled a different speed or bowled a good length bowl that was slightly slower, to catch out the batsman. What an idiot.
Yep.
You tell 'em Richie- great man , cricketer and commentator- RIP mate! x
Yes, Move on. But don't forget it.
Andrew Robinson,it might have been plumb but it was outside the line which means not out.

Australia destroyed cricket quality...

Aidankiwi, very rarely slow bowlers like that bowl no balls, usually its the fast bowlers that do.

To be fair, it WAS pretty stupid for the World Series Cricket rules committee not to plug that loophole, especially since it was plugged elsewhere. That being said, for this to happen, Chappell would have had to have been combing the rulebook and filing that oversight away for future use. Still gutless.
