      Besides S&M, Michael Kamen did the music for the Lethal Weapon series, the first 3 Die Hard movies, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and The Three Musketeers. In short he composed great music for some very popular (and in my opinion good) movies, so you could be forgiven for thinking he did the Lord of the Rings movies as well. But I'm sure you already knew that ;-)

    I personally disagree with your comment on Hetfield's voice. Obviously he's older now and his voice might not be quite as powerful as before, but he's still a great singer. The only real difference is that in the earlier stuff, he used do more yelling and less singing and now his voice doesn't carry the same anger. He can still yell pretty well now though (such as on parts of Hardwired, Spit Out The Bone, etc)

    • @BecomeTheKnight
      @BecomeTheKnight  7 лет назад +53

      It's partly his age, but it also has a lot to do with the fact that his voice was blown out on the Black Album. His singing technique isn't proper, which can royally screw up your vocal cords (look at the screamers/growlers in modern metal bands). I respect your disagreement though. Thanks for watching \m/

    • @ctgslayer
      @ctgslayer 7 лет назад +4

      Become The Knight I personally liked his Black Album voice the best in terms of his singing. After that is still good, but not as good as in the early 80's- early 90's. I don't really know anything about technique, but I still really like his voice. Honestly I can think of a lot of old singers who haven't retained a relatively good voice like he has. With all do respect though, I agree with most of the other stuff.

    • @alfonso1683
      @alfonso1683 7 лет назад

      Become The Knight I saw your point in the video and I somewhat agree. I agree that his age and all the performances shot his voice, but its still so badass. I saw them live a couple months ago and he was amazing. Plus a couple of days before the Grammys he got sick (There is probably a vid of his voice going to shit at a concert) and doctors told him not to sing at all. They even had to reschedule a concert because of it. So his voice wouldnt had gone back to normal in a couple of days. So its still fucked uo which is why he sounded the way he did during the grammys.

      I think the main point about Hetfield's voice sounding "shot" was just that he was pretty under-the-weather for the first couple of months of 2017 and was struggling with his vocals at the time. He recovered well enough to sound pretty good, particularly in the latter half of 2017, and hopefully he can keep that up - it's definitely difficult, though.

    Why does everyone think that the new Metallica album sucks? I actually really liked it. Infact "Moth into flame" is my favourite song out of it. I'm not an exprert when it comes to music and maybe that's why I don't see the problem.

    • @BecomeTheKnight
      @BecomeTheKnight  7 лет назад +38

      As with most things it comes down to personal taste. I wouldn't call it objectively bad, or even bad in my opinion. I think a lot of it has to do with people thinking they want Metallica to go back to being thrash like the old days, then realizing that those days are gone. Just mho.

    • @radoslavavlaykova3531
      @radoslavavlaykova3531 7 лет назад +19

      Well yeah, but one of the best things about music is that the musicians can express themselves through creating it and it's normal that their songs change with their personalities and taste. Also, their style isn't completely changed and the album sounds more mature and less angry. :D Anyway, everyone has their own opinion, I just don't like it when people are hateful towards Metallica, cause they are one of the best metal bands out there. :3

    Gaga actually dated metalheads when she was younger and frequented metal bars in NYC growing up, so she's actually been around that scene for a long time. It's why no other pop star could've done as well as she did up there with them. I know a lot of people would've thought she was a try hard up there crowd surfing but she knew what she was doing. She actually has a song dedicated to an ex of hers called Heavy Metal Lover.

    I do think they could have done a decent performance. But this one just seemed so off and gaga seemed so out of place and she just looked like she was trying way too hard to look all cool and edgy. Not to mention some of her delivery was laughable. I think if they just collaborated as musicians with their own identity, and not at a shitty event like the grammys, they'd actually be able to do something worthwhile. This was just sad.

    You're right about James' voice... But Metallica wouldn't be metallica without Hetfield. Same goes with Lars. They have put and their hearts to the band and it would be disrespectful if for example Lars would be kicked out. Humans make errors and that is the beauty of music. Sometimes a failed drum fill isn't a bad thing because people can relate to that. Everybody makes mistakes. But ofc I don't wan't musicians to make mistakes of course they have to play well and correctly... This comment ended up very confusing but whatever. Been following you since about xmas and I love your content keep going !!!!

    • @BecomeTheKnight
      @BecomeTheKnight  7 лет назад +3

      No worries on the long comment dude. You're right. Metallica wouldn't be Metallica w/out James and Lars...plain and simple. And as Paul McCartney said (or thereabouts) our mistakes become our ideas. But musicality is a fragile gray area that no scientist dare to venture.......and yet I stupidly do.
      James wouldn't be happy with his performance at the Grammys. Why? Because he knew it wasn't top tier. Hell, since the inception of the band he stated something to the effect, "the songs have to have lyrics and a singer, so I'll do it." In the context of a person having to sing for the sake of having a singer, he fills the role well. Being musical? That's another debate, especially their live performances in the last 20 years. On this performance (and MANY others) he fell short. And this comes from a fan of Metallica and Hetfield.

    I discovered your videos a few days ago, and I really like how you critizise all those performances! You are not a "hater" who generally says "This is bad", but you are fair. You point out what is good and what not, and you give an explanation WHY you think it´s good or bad. I subscribed you just now.
    One question: you mentioned Gaga and Hetfield looking at each other while singing. I discovered that this happens very often, even in popmusic videos or performances of the 60s and 70s. But I never got what it means. Is it just for looking good, or is there some kind of meaning behind it, when two singers look at each other during a song, face to face?

    • @BecomeTheKnight
      @BecomeTheKnight  7 лет назад +2

      Mostly for show. In the old days it was because they had limited microphones to work with usually. But it's just visually appealing. Thanks for the props dude \m/

    • @Hosenrolle1
      @Hosenrolle1 7 лет назад

      Thanks for the answer! (And sorry for my bad english)
      I always thought maybe there is some kind of meaning behind that face to face-singing, because when singers do that, they DON´T look at the camera or the audience. I thought maybe the eye contact between both singers is important for the performance or something like that. So it´s just choreography without any meaning? :(
      BTW it would be so great if you would critizise some older music videos like Nancy Sinatra with "These boots are made for walking" and that stuff, I´d love to hear your opinion!

    Gaga actually struck me as more capable of connecting with other musicians and still maintain showmanship than many people are capable, and that always makes me smile in an era of art bereft of connection.
    Another person you can tell is super into music and living on stage with other people, as unexpected as it might be, is Celine Dion. She's had that Vegas show but she never seems bored, disconnected or even momentarily ungrateful for the opportunity and the instrumentalists.
    She also does a dorky impersonation of the instruments sometimes (she lets them play and soak it in alone during solos first), and a collaboration she did with Taro Hakase, Japanese violinist, I remember made me super happy when I saw the live version regardless of genre and lyrical content. ("To Love You More".)
    She's classy af, like the kind of adult that makes you question your adulthood. On her run as a mentor for one part of The Voice's preliminaries, she gave the most practical (do this, bc this, if X is your goal) and work-ethic-oriented advice that I've seen from coaches on that show.
    Can we have a moment of silence for how some of those ungodly good singers almost always have stories of working hard but still not having a career sustainable enough to be their sole source of income?

    I think James' voice is awesome now days. There was a period for the late 90s through the early 2000s where I hated it as well, but I think he has learned to work with his voice changing with age and is great now days.

    The hole thing struck fear into my heart as I cringed watching it like some one was having there teeth pulled out. I love Metallica but I haven't been able to listen to James in years. By Reload his voice was shot. Girls on stage and Metallica? what are we doing a Motly Crew video? I guess cause AC/DC pulled it off in the 80's they thought they could too. What's next Slayer with Madonna as back up? Count me out.

    Anyone got any mic recommendations? Mike's looks nice but I'm ignorant when it comes to brands and quality for singing or videos like this lol. Just exploring my options right now so any tips would help 😁

    Hey Mike I was wondering what is your opinion of Kirk Hammett as a guitarist? A lot of people hate on his stuff for not being very technical and falling back on the same stuff too much (Bluesy pentatonic licks, wah pedal). Personally I have my own criticisms of his stuff but think that he is still a great guitarist and plays with a lot of feel. Just interested in your thoughts as a fellow fan.

    You mentioned that Michael Kamen composed the music for the Lord of the Rings movies, and that is actually not true. Howard Shore wrote those scores (assuming of course you're talking about the Peter Jackson movies, and not some other Lord of the Rings things that I don't know about). Anyway, now you know, I guess.
