Hi! Great video. Just a small addition in case you can not fix a light under the cabinet the alternative can be a good head torch with adujustable head. I use it while I am cooking. There are number of them available some starting at as low as $9 on amazon. One can use the same for multiple purpose. Most of them are very comfortable to wear on your head.

I have several of those lightswitch type you showed. They are wonderful, very bright and in a pinch I use mine like a flashlight. I bought 3 0r 4 of those gooseneck LED desk lamps at W-mart. they are small, very bright and can be bent in many different directions, I love those, I have on near my computer to shine on the keyboard, and 2 in the kitchen to use as task lighting for under the dark cabinets. They have nice long power cords so they can go all over the house. I have one by my reading chair, kind of perched over my shoulder and it works great. Finally I feel like there is enough light in the house.
I have also seen really great under the cabinet lights that you can just stick on instead of having to screw or anyting. I still struggle with that in the kitchen and I have been looking for a solution.🤔
On Amazon I found long flexible LED strips that are motion activated. I think they would work well running underneath cabinets. I added them to the pool electron except section of my Amazon shop. You should check them out!
Lighting is very important to me. Sometimes I need lots of light and sometimes I just need enough to make out where the dresser is in the middle of the night. I have a few different lights I keep with me from high powered battery LED work lights to small LED flashlights. However, one thing I have done at home is to add lighted switches. When the lights are off they glow orange and stand out in the dark. Makes it easier to find that pesky switch when he wall is covered in stuff you do not want to knock off. I bought mine on Amazon but Lowe's, Home Depot or your favorite Hardware store should have or be able to get them. I also have high powered LED work lights on my ATV so if I am outdoors at night and need light, I just have it pulled into position where I need light and light it up. It gives me plenty of light dealing with the critters at night.
Yep! Lighting can be very importnt. I'm on the more severe end of the VI spectrum, I suppose, so I was taught more blind-specific nonvisual techniques to do stuff. However, I do find good lighting REALLY important when I'm doing my destress hobby. I build Lego kits, and I need really solid bright light to properly sort pieces by color. I've sorted at night and the next day been like WTF, these are totally different colors! My home has decent light, but not the best and brightest. My dorm room is actually really awesome for sorting because the light is very bright and straight over where I sit, rather than off at an agle coming from elsewhere in the room. I only sort by sight, I build after sorting by feel but only sometimes sight-check when there are pieces that feel the same but are different colors. I used to love, as a kid, reading way past bedtime in the dark because, yay, Braille! I'm also one of the fortunate number ofVIPs who has reasonable night vision and doesn't mind moving around in the dark. I did a lot of sleep shade training. Am I the only one who, as a teenager, poked holes through those things with a Braille stylus? A lot of people at a summer program I went to did LOL My vision is basically stable so I consider myself very fortunate.

Hey Sam i am grumbling of no overhead lighing for living room area and te bedroom. i find the idea on no ceiling fixtures that I had as a kid was the most logical and practical . i find the logic of cutting costs. nonsense. I would like your thoughts I do jigsaw puzzles and sewing drawing and reading. my work table is in the middle of the room . I have to watch for tripping issues for my spouse is totally bind. so to have cords in the walk way a complete hazard.
Well, it may not be the most attractive thing but you could hang a light fixture right above your workstation, maybe like one of those paper lantern China balls that give off a lot of good diffused light. You could hang it with a simple hook that would screw into the ceiling and then run the cord along the ceiling over to one of the walls, down the wall and to the plug. That way you’re not permanently installing anything or damaging the ceiling. And you’ll have cords out of the way.
I so want to help my mom. She is low vision, for the last 14 years. she could see with the esight glasses, but is hoping for side vision as well. Do you have any suggestion's, on where to look for something like that? I admire you and your wife, you've given my mom hope. And she is excited to explore her option's. If you-know of anything, I would take her to check it out
There isn’t really anything that can bring back peripheral vision. Some devices have a larger field of you than the east side which can help. Iris vision is one of those. I have several videos about that on my channel if you need more information.
I am beyond light-sensitive. I can barely look at my phone to watch your videos. I got to say though, I was worse when my vision impairment started. I have adapted a little and I am a little bit less light sensitive and don't have to wear sunglasses everywhere. I use LED night lights in my house which are awesome because I stopped walking in walls when they're on. However, when they're in my peripheral vision they are mine twisting. They end up giving me a headache. I never even thought of looking into the sensor versions of these lights. I'm going to look into seeing how much they are and see if those work better for me. Mine are censored but they're only for light to dark sensitivity. It would be awesome to have a motion sensor version.
I found several cool options on Amazon and added them to the pool electronics section of my Amazon shopping. You should check those out. They were all very affordable.
We’re definitely not a Missy family but I think the tightness is more my thing. It’s easier to navigate the house and find things when it’s not too cluttered.
@@theblindlife I totally agree. Before I was visually impaired stuff would be sitting around and you think whatever I'll get it later. Now that I'm visually impaired and home a lot of more I'm very OCD. Everything needs to be cleared and clean. You're very frustrated and knock things over if I don't see them. We used to be the family that had the kitchen table full of papers from the mail through the week and we would clear it off like at the weekend. Now, or the family that if I see a single piece of paper on the table I feel like it's a big cluster f. Drives me crazy. LOL
LOL! I'm VI but I'm still kind of a disorganizgh mess! I tend to clutter up places, drawers, etc and go through them only sometimes. It's like hey, I know where they are! However, I curse myself when I'm almost late for class or work and I'm like WTF are my glasses, not in their case? Where are my shoes? Where'd I put my AppleWatch? Stuff like that. I was a LOT worse as a teen, though. I'm not a messy/dirty person, but a bit of a disorganized one. I grew up in a house with a VERY neat parent, so that passed on. I was microwaving some food in my dorm's kitchen and was like GROSS!!! These people really need to pick up after themselves! The counter you could feel the grime, same with the sink. The hall director even had to take the trash can out and make us use our own or the trash room because people kept throwing gross items in there that made housekeeping complain

Sam, you save the day! Help me I am trying to change the ADA law to include extra optional lighting for apartments for low vision persons in the ceiling of bedrooms and living rooms/. Landlords have cut costs. I cant have a desk lamp or floor lamp every 8 feet. apart. I am like you I have written to all Democrats to do something.From Nancy Pelosi on down. Senators congressmen and women.I have low vision, this is keeping me from doing Artwork and Crafts. i am considering the Bell and howell lightbars .I even use the flashlight that you can get on your smartphone.Curt thinks I am going more blind but no better lighting would do the trick!I wish I could get more information to do more to add that onto it . If they can make Braille menus and wheelchair ramps why not this.? What do you think of The no Jab cane?
