  • A three day weekend spent railfanning in my home state. I’m still excited by the variety of power and the fact that Cascade green still runs regularly between Seattle and Portland. This video details the scenic joint BNSF/UP line that is an artery for northwest freight.

On that bridge why were they acting as if it was a crossing? Unless it is ahead of the bridge?

I don't see the benefit of that fake horn at the ferry slip crossing in Steilacoom. Thought it was a boat coming in. Where do those ferries go, btw?

They go out to Anderson Island. McNeil Island, also served, has a former federal prison that now the state of Washington owns and operates. They get deliveries of both items needed there and prisoners going both ways.

Neily this is simply fantastic, must admit the low angle shots south of centennial are awesome. Stumped though, where is that shot at 44:10 in Puyallup? M

Living within earshot of this shared UP & BNSF mainline with over 60 trains a day passing through here's a couple of observations. Distributed power or DPU's are commonly seen on heavier grain, coal and oil trains all originating someplace else. And a majority of the forest products one sees on these trains around here heading south are from Canada. Especially the soft wood products which the Trump administration just levied a tariff on all Canadian soft wood forest products saying they have an unfair advantage in the market place (which I too believe) at the expense of US loggers and manufacturers. The oil trains coming in here are from North Dakota and the coal comes from Utah, Wyoming, Canada etc etc headed to one of the ports around here (Aberdeen, Seattle, Tacoma, Bellingham, Vancouver Canada) for export. Oh and the garbage trains going south are most likely headed to the large regional landfill - Columbia Ridge in Arlington Oregon.

What city is that where the ferry is and the tracks run along the water?

What frame rate and editing software do you use?

PNWRailfan This was at 24 fps like most of my work. I edit in Davinci Resolve, this video took 4.5 hours to render. Thanks for watching!

Thanks. I recently started using a Rebel T6 and when I'm recording a train passing at a decent speed it appears blurry. I wasn't shooting in the best light, maybe that had something to do with it. Any idea how to fix it and make it appear crisper?

    • @neilybobmojo_railfanning
      @neilybobmojo_railfanning  7 лет назад

PNWRailfan If you're shooting in full manual then you will want to use a faster shutter speed for action. Everyone says to use 1/50 sec but i use faster multiples of that like 1/125 or 1/200 sec speeds to stop the motion. It is a balancing act though because sometimes it looks too sharp and doesn't look quite right.

Why do the train horn sounds fake in some of this video... example 38:50 and all those trains at the same crossing.
The approaching train horn does not change pitch at all and we all know the pitch will get higher as it approaches then lower as it go away...?
I like you video and thanks for sharing... its awesome... however some of those horns... they sound fake...? Its like the horn sound it actually being produced at the level crossing...?

Good observation, It is being produced at the crossing. The city of Steilacoom enacted a silent zone so no trains sound off anymore, it is a simulated crossing horn that carries less of a distance than a classic locomotive horn. To me it's horrible sounding lol, but it's the future I guess. Thanks for watching!

Cheers... probably makes sense to have the horn at the crossing, as well as on the Loco's if needed.... but yeah, it sounded like a HO train set.. Merry Christmas... :-)

Tacoma did the same thing and you'll hear that at the Oldtown crossing of McCarver street off Ruston Way also along the waterfront and that was due to many complaints of "train noise" from the local citizenry. That's the shared UP-BNSF mainline between Seattle and Portland Oregon with over 60 trains a day rolling through there. There's a historic tunnel right up the line there at Ruston that goes under the city (near Point Defiance Park) and comes out on the water on the west side of the city. If you have a map check that out as a lot of people aren't aware of that. On a side note they're now running trains through south Tacoma that will take some of the traffic off that mainline. They intersect south of Tacoma.

You should get up to Tacoma, Wa. There is a BNSF and a UP yard not to far from each other, (this is where UP separates from the BNSF Mainline and runs on their own main from Tacoma to Tukwila). BNSF main radio channels are 70, 76, 87, depending on where you are. UP main channels are 27 and 38. Just remember to obey all signage, if you are asked to stop filming, inquire as to why and if they say its for security reasons, then obey. if any other, then you can continue. The police force employed by BNSF and UP are federal officers, so anything they slap on you is FEDERAL. Just my two cents.

Yes thanks for the info. My mom lived in Sumner as a child and I lived in Seattle during my childhood so I love coming to visit my "home" in Washington. Good memories. The Mount Rainier shot with the Cascades was one of the few trains I saw late in the day near Puyallup. Thanks for watching :D
