- Can SEGA make a console in this day and age? Yes. But its a very risky and delicate process that may not be worth it.

If you want to succeed, focus on games and features. Sick of having consoles do everything except having good games on them.
Agreed, games are all about graphics and is why it’s getting worse while older games are fun and older console was about features and not about power
I'm a HUGE supporter of the Jet Set Radio series. If they could modernize the controls but keep that same vibe (along with the absolutely WILD soundtrack) I would be buying it day one. I fully admit JSR is rough but personally I think Future was the perfect blueprint for what could have continued into an amazing franchise.
If Sega were to make a comeback with the console business, it would be possible if Microsoft were to leave the business and/or when Sega would be able to focus more on their IPs than only just Sonic.
That would be fitting, since once Sega decided not to release another console, they gave the plans they had to Microsoft for the original Xbox.
Making the Persona series exclusive to a Sega console would be what sells me! I got a PS4 when Persona 5 came out just so I could play it😅
HOW DID I FORGET PERSONA!!!?
Sega can only do one thing to compete against Nintendo, Sony and MS:
Avoid making painfully obvious stupid business decisions. Like burying their IPs for decades, making scummy payment schemes for old games sold as new like in Sonic Origins, or wasting money on studios with no roster of talents, like they did with Golden Axe Beast Rider.
Talking down on Jet Set Radio and Crazy Taxi in a Sega video is crazy
I don't think it needs to be high budget. Make astonishing 2d games and the most faithful emulation (or remasters) for their old games. Make it a portable with wildly good battery life, reasonable price games, and maybe super high refresh rates and ultra low latency. They can be the king of fast-paced games.
Something I'd want to see is a Nomad format controller where there's a small touch screen in the middle for a keyboard, unusual control options (maybe sliding your finger around for a mouse/cursor in some games?), additional info/menus, etc. Don't go all out like the Wii U, but have something to add some added usability. Keep modernizations like the share and option buttons, the four face buttons, dual analog sticks, and handles… but add that touchscreen where the PS4's touchpad was.
Honestly a new SEGA console would probably crash and burn, but it would still be a day 1 purchase for me lol.
Hear me out...the Sega Overdrive.

6:09 "thats just sorta like 15 minutes of fun"
I belive the Nintendo Switch and many smaller/indie games' success on it have proven that there is 100% a place in the market for smaller, bite-sized games.
For sure. Just back then on Dreamcast those titles were the consoles essential pillars to help consumers decide which console to own at the time and all i was saying there was Dreamcast needed stronger titles at the front of the marketing in those early years.
Maybe they would fit better if a new Sega console was also a handheld, just like the Switch.
If I got a name idea, what do you think, SEGA Traveler"it's going places"
I would love for Sega to come back into the console business, but Sega would need to invest an insane amount of money to be able to even have a chance at competing witht he big three.
Console development, game development, releasing games only on your own platform, effectively crippling your sales until they have sold enough conosoles to be competetive, massive amounts of marketing costs.
I honestly don't think Sega has enough money to even remotely consider doing this. You'd need to be in the ranks of Apple or Google, where you can just spend an unfathomable amount of money and fail and everythings still alright.
I feel like Sega just hasn't taken good enough care of its IPs over the years. Most of their franchises just dropped off the face of the earth. And then there's Sonic which hasn't been able to keep up the AAA quality. It's cool that they're trying to revive franchises now but who knows if there's even a place for these arcade-like games in the current market. Especially if they try to do live service like they're doing with Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio
I agree. I really hope they revive some of the classics, especially shining force and Landstalker
Sega Exodus would technically be the Sega Genesis 2.
I started gaming with the Sega Genesis when I was a toddler back in the mid to late 90's. So I'm willing to get the new Sega console in favor over a PS5 Pro & a 8K supported Xbox Series whatever
The Dream Sega Genesis. 😂
I’ll be surprised if SEGA gets back into the console business….
Trying to think outside the box (the console) in this case. If Sega were to get back into the game with some type of hardware, introducing a new console is just playing by their rules. The whole purpose/essence of Sega is to 1up everyone else, and take us to the next level. I think a console introduction would be great which could be backwards compatible with every Sega game in existence is a good start, but I also could see some sort of wearable that maybe we haven’t witnessed yet which makes Sega more of a lifestyle, not just a game console. I don’t know what this device would be, but it would need to be something you’d want on you 24/7. It may or may not be eyewear. Maybe an area like AR to expand on gaming. Or maybe it’s utilizing AI to reinvision the classic games tailored to your preferences on the fly. Maybe it goes beyond the TV or handheld, and it’s some sort of 3d display device which allows multiple people to view/play from all different vantage points?
The good news is that Sega has a vibe/identity they can lean into for their games. They can build more upon that. I’m not worried about the games. I’m just worried that if they were to try to compete with PlayStation/xbox/nintendo they would be trying to play by their rules.
I’m not going to solve it here in this comment box, but there’s always room for some sort of disruption (especially now since many studios are laying off people). I think the market has spoken. It’s clearly time for something new and innovative to come along to “change the game.” Is Sega willing to take that risk?
I find the Dreamcast to be one of, if not the most underrated console of all time. Sega really does have a lot more IP power than you'd think (especially with Atlus and RGG studios these days). They can almost certainly leverage that to sell a new console.
I'm with ya
Jet Set Radio is such a lovely game series. A bit arcadey but does offer a story and progression. Would love to see it go open world.
It would be a huge request to ask consumers to spend money on their Nintendo console, their PlayStation or XBox, and then buy a third console for the same generation. I would totally buy a new Sega console, but it would need amazing exclusives on top of most of what we expect from modern consoles, such as decent controllers, peripheral support, online play, 4k/60fps, and third party apps. Make a streamlined console, sell it for ~$300 but include amazing games, and then maybe they would stand a chance.
I mean with Microsoft Xbox bowing out of consoles supposedly that leaves a pretty decent opening for Sega as soon as Xbox does actually leave if they do. Or better yet we could just get that steam console I'm really hoping for
As much as I like Sega to come back and compete and make a new console. I rather they stay third party and just focus on making games for the big three that was Valve, Nintendo, and Sony. Making consoles was what got them close to bankruptcy and they already prove that they don't get along with each other and still to this day they still don't. By being a dedicated third party developer at least they don't had to take risk every time they r&d a project.
They would have to go back in time and make me create all my fondest childhood memories around their games. Instead of cozy wholesome childhood I think of Ecco the nightmare, doesn’t hit the same
Can’t wait to buy the MasterMegaSaturnCast!

The issue with making consoles nowadays is that no company can make their own hardware anymore, and so they have to outsource to one of the two companies: AMD or Nvidia. And since everyone is doing that, all consoles are just specialized PCs. Why would consumers want to move to another box that is exactly the same, but without their friends?
At least it would be easy for developers to port their games, but why would they if consumers don't want the console?
It's an issue that the whole industry is running into, and I believe that it is similar to smartphones in the sense that we've reached a plateau for the technology, except that it doesn't take 5+ years for big companies to develop apps for phones, which is yet another issue that consoles are facing.
However, I think that if SEGA, or anyone, were to partner with Snapdragon and make either small, energy efficient consoles/tv devices, or portable consoles, they would be able to gain a place in the video game console race. Those markets are not yet saturated and far from plateauing out.
It is a good idea. I'm still planning on buying a Sega saturn with panzer dragoon. Also altered beast is on my buy list.
I would personally prefer a Dreamcast 2 angle/focus/marketing 1000× more than a Genesis 2/Mega Drive 2 angle.
Maybe test the waters with some kind of a portable device, maybe something similar to the Switch with a strong opening catalog of games - a new Sonic, Yakuza, SOR 5, Football manager etc. SEGA could find themselves in a niche market or they fall flat on their faces. I’d support them anyway
Would be interesting to see SEGA back into the console race. Speaking older IPs, Pulseman would be another interesting series to bring back (though Nintendo would make that very difficult). As for a console name, it could be the Sega Genesis AGES.
Historically, game consoles beat out other computers by being much cheaper to manufacture and having better graphics. This was very much true with the NES, SNES, Genesis, PS1 and PS2. But nowadays, prices for any kind of computer hardware (including cell phones and tablets) have hit rock bottom, so consoles can no longer compete against other devices by having lower manufacturing cost and better graphics. It's also a saturated market with no room for a newcomer. The only people who successfully got in were Valve with the Steam Deck by having an existing install base of purchased PC games.
I'd certainly love to see the Sega of my youth return, Skies of Arcadia to me had a sense of exploration that maybe only the first Grandia managed to touch upon, it really is in a league of it's own in terms of setting, and a sequel would be an insta buy for me for sure.
But hot take time... When I really think back on it, I've come to realise (for the most part) that the Sega of my youth was really an arcade company first, and home console second, and is a big part of why their systems worked for so long. The arcades gave the opportunity to throw games at the wall to see what sticks, and when they made sensible choices, such as Genesis / System 16/18, Dreamcast / Naomi and so on, there was a pretty decent pipeline to give the arcade experience at home, with the flexibility to innovate in the arcades.
I'd argue now, things have moved on, and without the arcade playground, Sega have lost a big part of what made them special in terms of churning out new IP's. I'd love to be proven wrong, to be clear I started with the Master System all the way to the Dreamcast, Sega is absolutely where my gaming youth was spent.
Mystic defender 3,Phantasy Star 5,Sonic Adventure 3,Virtual Fighter 6, Thunder Force 7,Shining of the holy ark 2,Vector Man 3,Sega GT 24,New Panzer dragoon, Blue Stinger 2 etc i couldve added another 100+.
VECTORMAN ONG they could modernize it by adding 3rd person sections with max Payne style me mechanics yo the game ontop of more beautiful side scrolling sections
As long as they have Blast Processing!
If Microsoft Xbox keeps messing with their developers like they have done in recent months, perhaps there will be an opening for Sega again one day. I doubt they would want to try it though!
"Vectorman doesnt even have little cameos any more", this implies he ever did in the first place😩
you more than likely dont know this, but there was a cancelled Vectorman game planned for
the Saturn, Vectorman Ultra. a good while before that weird cancelled PS2 game that was
a thing...anywho, if you want to learn A LOT more about Ultra, go check out Evil Pixel's video
on it. it went up about 10 months ago and its still there.
0:52 I was thinking that I would by a SEGA console if it has Skies of Arcadia Legends (my favorite JRPG) but a sequel would also be a good incentive.
If they did that. I will buy 10 gaming consoles and all the games ever made for it
The Sega Regenesis
Sega exodus or Phoenix would be a better name imo
Where did this idea come from? Is there any indication they will?
Sega is still huge in the arcade sector iirc, if they leaned on that like the early days they could potentially carve out a niche in the console market again. I think you're focusing too hard on the games themselves, they can do all of that right now without making a new console. If they were going to enter that market again they'd need a console that really stands apart from the others, it can't just be yet another "PC in a fancy case". Nintendo has the right idea, originality is more important than power
Yeah, this guy forgot about the Dreamcast which had one of the best game catalogs that money can buy but it still flopped. It's only possible for Sega to break in to consoles again by employing a lateral strategy like Nintendo who rely on the gimmick of nostalgia & family friendly games. In Sega's case, they could easily do something similar by leaning hard into Arcades & Arcade culture. It's a niche that no one else is currently doing, & the only other company that could pull it off is SNK.
I think going for the 30-40 hour mark would be a mistake. Who has that kinda time? I'm in my early 20s and I don't have that kind of time, I would love it if they made something like a jet set radio, something funky, fun and arcade-y would be awesome. I want something I can sit down and beat, something that I can give at least an hour to every day and have fun
I feel like that would be better for something like the switch, or, more realistically, they'd be better off just making games for steam deck
People investing in a console are often the most enthusiastic enthusiasts who'd want those big games
A lot of the casual market is split between ps5 and switch, and I don't see them shifting if they don't have to
Sega can by taking all of their ip’s & everything that made their brand and crush in into one.
And did everything with patience & a lot of insight and market analysis.
Sega Genesis x
1.the controller- need to have the genesis feel.. 3 row (a,b,c )& x button over the b button & two shoulder buttons y&z. & triggers, built in rumble
Replicate every high point .
1.alexx kidd in miracle world
An action,platformer,rpg
*Sonic adventure 3.. no fluff
Better versions of every Dreamcast & Saturn game.
No funny names just numbered .
Kid chameleon 2 ala paper Mario engine
Shinobi 5….
Every game has in depth story n well made gameplay
Every single ip in proper 3d gameplay engines, with realistic gameplay .
Imagine streets of rage 5 with a 2 player god if war/devil may cry engine
After burner sim with a feel of arcade like they did with the 2k games .
Realism is the name of the game , that’s why they lost in the Saturn era. They wanted arcade shallow short games in disks for expensive money
. Sega need to take gameplay engine from the likes
Of Billy Hatcher , toe jam and early 3 and stop being corny and lame and trying too hard to be cool and force stereo types .
Just make good games with great stories and deep gameplay and features and longevity
It's not a good idea. They're in a good place right now, making more money than if they were just making games for one platform.
They can still put out their B/C tier stuff on steam, mobile and maybe even other console platforms but the good sht like sonic adventure 3 or a new yakuza or persona game would stay on the sega console
@@dragoe7441 It wouldn't be sustainable. They'd first need to unify their own fanbase. Sonic fans don't play Yakuza, Yakuza fans don't play Sonic. Most Sonic fans don't even know the majority of SEGA's IP, let alone have played them or enjoy them as fans.
Most Sonic fans didn't recognise Sonic Superstars seemingly random shmup level being an homage to Fantasy Zone. Most Bayonetta fans think Bayonetta is a Nintendo IP, despite the game being riddled with references to SEGA classics like Outrun, Afterburner and Space Harrier.
"SEGA fans" have been complaining about them not bringing old IP back, but did they buy Sakura Wars or Streets of Rage 4?
Sega needs to go the Nintendo route & rely on a gimmick hook. Sega doesn't have enough money to compete against Sony & Xbox with hardware comparable to their specs. They'd have to use a lateral strategy that focuses on their arcade tech & market it as a couch co-op multiplayer party machine. Double down on Sega Online & build the network to imitate the atmosphere of 80s/90s arcades. Gen Z loves that retro crap. Design it with a mentality of hard & fast games like the Genesis once did. Even Phantasy Star 4 is a fast & gritty game when compared to other 16bit rpgs.
I wonder if would be a portable (but dockable) thing like the switch and steam deck (and probably switch 2) or a classical home console like playstation and xbox.
It will just be a remake of Genesis as always.
also, for Franchise revivals they don't need a new console, they are already trying to revive a lot of them. A new SEGA Ages collection of revivals was announced at Summer Games Fest & just like with Streets of Rage 4 was promptly dismised
just admit it, nobody wants a Sega revival Console, we just miss the 90's
Yeah, no, a competent reorganized sega would be far better than the modern xbox. I don't want a gaming industry dominated by multimedia companies who barely (or just straight up dont) put out any exclusives for their systems (Sony and Microsoft)
@@dragoe7441 exclusives is a bad practise to begin with, & no longer has a place
also, the whole "Exclusives revive the games i want" has been proven to be a false logic for years
@@dragoe7441 Sega being a console company wouldn't change that. There not being exclusives has to do with trying to make a profit at a time of sky high development costs and not because the company that produces the console is a multimedia company(which Sega Sammy is one of those)
As an old-school Sega fan, I would love this. The most cost effective thing they could do would be to sell a console with very little parts inside and have fans be able to access a streaming service. New games could be modern prices, but there should be a tiered level for classic games you can subscribe to--newer consoles cost more, but the more you pay in a monthly fee, it would subsidize/reduce the regular cost of new games by $5 per tier.
If it got popular, other third parties could jump aboard, but it should start as a strictly Sega only console as to not directly compete with MS, Nintendo, Sony, and Valve.
I like your description of DC games as "misfit games." The new console should be called the Sega Misfit--the company really was one, they were a disruptor and did what they wanted, good or bad.
Lost me at "streaming services"
@@RhythmGrizz fr
Will you do a boundary break on injustice or older Batman games (begins/vengeance)?
Didnt watch the video YET (just on a quick bathroom break at work) but for sega to enter the console market they would have to team up with a tech company or multimedia company as they no longer have the resources to afford manufacturing, distributing or especially researching the technology for these systems by themselves
Microsoft would also have to completely exit the console market
Sega should try to be a mix of nintendo and what the xbox was in the 2000's, a system that isnt a complete powerhouse but still far more capable than whatever nintendo puts out, and a large collection of excellent first party games and decent third party support (making sure every cod, destiny, madden, gta etc is on the system)
Not yet, first they need to build a huge fanbase with all their IP's for a long time and maybe then in 10-20 years enough fans are willing to pay for a console to play SEGA Games.
Yeah!
What if Sega
Its over for sega. We would buy for Nostalgia,we greq with those IPs, yet the money is with the young people and i doubt those IPs will make it a success with the young generation. Its like bringing the Amiga back, it only work with nostalgia or You just renew yourself but then you are just one more and lets be honest, Sonic is not a big hit anymore
Platform exclusives are one of the most toxic aspects of this industry [yes, even Nintendo's], and it is the absolute last thing I would want to see more of. With that in mind, I just can't get on board with the idea.
I absolutely despise this take
Platform exclusives are an even greater incentive for gaming companies to pump put good products to boost both software and console sales
Look at sega Post dreamcast or think of what nintendo would be like if they stopped making consoles
Through your perspective it may be but platform exclusives are what the industry needs to rely on for it to survive. Without exclusives, platforms don't compete and when there's no competition there's no reason to buy any platform therefore the ones that got less support died and the one that survive won't had any reason to innovate or evolve thus you had games like FIFA, Madden, and Call of Duty every year. It's like going to see a boxing match between Mike Tyson and Muhammed Ali where instead of them fighting they end up hugging the entire time. It's just boring. Having exclusives give a platform a reason to exist, compete, and move the industry. When a platform stopped competing, the industry lose a competitor and a piece of itself.
yeah they could, but why would they when the Casino, Hotels, & Arcade side of hardware gives them so much more proffit.
Also, unlike business hardware, Home Consoles are always sold at a loss, and with the market gearing towards console agnosticism with the Handheld PC/Emulators, is just not worth it
also the Genesis 2 already exists, in face we even got a Gernesis 3
The problem is that Sega, just like back then, has no system sellers. They have ip's that have fanbases, sure. But every successful console has about 5 or so event titles, things that make tens of millions of people willing to pay hundreds of dollars just to play that game. They just have the same 10,000 delusional fanboys who go on retro gaming channels to wax wistful about the 90's and the million(but not tens of millions) of persona fans who are willing to pay $60 for it, but aren't willing to switch platforms over it. And that just leads to what happened last time. And that's why Sega has to remind those 10,000 they are never, under any circumstance, going to put themselves through that ever again. The only third party publishers I can think of that has the pull to potentially pull off being a successful console company is ea, t2, capcom, and mihoyo, and none of them are ever going to do that either.
Sonic was never good.
Neither was your mom
Good for 5 games at least. Then everything was shite. Too much focus on cheerleader characters that also run fast instead of Sonic's gameplay.
