    Hello! Im glad i found your video im gonna make some hardshell jackets for my school project! One question could you do a quick tutorial on how you saw the zippers, for the pocket especially it seems extremely quick.. great video!

      Please take a look at my other videos, where I explained it a bit:

      It is always the same: Line the zipper if needed, sew in the cover stripes on each end, sew in the zipper assembly into place.

    Thank you for sharing your whole process! Contemplating doing this myself some day, so Can i ask you, how much sewing experience did you have prior to this? How long did the jacket last/ does it still hold up? Since it wasn’t easy for you getting the right material are there any alternatives you thought of? And lastly what type tape did you seal the seams with? Thanks in advance!

    • @MatthiasBurkhardt
      @MatthiasBurkhardt  4 года назад +4

      I am a hobby tailor, so no professional. But I sew since 30 years, so I have some experience. Generally, I think this material is not too hard to handle, as it is not elastic and therefore easy to sew. But you have to cut your parts precisely. The jacket is still in use, but as a raincoat for cycling not used too often. The sealing tape is PU-based. I got it from the same supplier as the fabric: Sympatex.
      There are some shops out there that sell such fabric, one I know of in Germany is www.extremtextil.de/.

      Thank you! I use a Juki needletransport machine DLN-5410N-7 lockstitch, a Juki MO 2414 Overlock and a Siruba F007K Flatlock, which really annoys me, so I will change it to a Juki at some stage.

  • @AcceleratingUniverse

    Why did you design the front bodice with multiple panels? I cannot find any explanation of why hardshell jackets all have this feature.

    • @MatthiasBurkhardt
      @MatthiasBurkhardt  2 года назад

      It is just because it is much easier and has a cleaner look with multiple panels, because of the zipper attaching. I do not like fiddling in a zipper in one single panel.

  • @guytarazi
    @guytarazi 4 года назад

    That is a really cool idea and I want to try. Where did you get the irons for the seam sealing tape?
    Did you put and nice fabric for the neck area?

    • @MatthiasBurkhardt
      @MatthiasBurkhardt  4 года назад

      I made them on my own ;-)
      ruclips.net/video/t7P00usHjh0/видео.html
      What do you mean with "put and nice fabric for the neck area"? The whole thing is 2-layer and turned over at the end. Therefore, the Sympatex is 2-layer at the neck.

    I've been working on a goretx parka for a few years now (off and on), my struggle is getting skipped stitches. Did you experience any of this? Is so, what was your fix.

    • @MatthiasBurkhardt
      @MatthiasBurkhardt  4 года назад

      Nope, I have a Juki needletransport industrial machine. This machine just works perfect on any fabric. You could try another needle to get rid of this. What machine are you sewing with?

      @@MatthiasBurkhardt, I am using a Necchi freearm or Singer 500a (Rocketeer). I have tried all needles, I'll get it out again and try some more.

    • @MatthiasBurkhardt
      @MatthiasBurkhardt  4 года назад

      @@jeff.3.2.12 The Rocketeer seems to be a good and nice looking machine ;-) We also have a Pfaff 561 needle transport machine and have had others like a Duerkopp 271 and a Juki DLN 414-4 and none has / had problems with skipped stitches. It could also be the fabric. I remember a microfiber fabric where all machines had problems sewing because of the weaving density of that fabric. But that was the only one I remember. Do you have this problem with other fabrics too?

      @jeff.3.2.12 4 года назад

      @@MatthiasBurkhardt, only when sewing really plush flannels or bulky materials will it skip. That jacket is goretex material which is very tight as it is waterproof.

      The fabric is from the trade fair (munich fabric start), and it is a 3 layer laminate from Sympatex, the only company that sold me only a few meters of the stuff. All other companies do not sell to private persons or you would have to buy ~500meters of one kind.
