  • Graveyard Live at Whiskers - Set 1
    February 22, 1975
    Tag Graves - Lead Guitar
    Gary Graves - Bass/Vocals
    Glen Graves - Drums/Lead Vocals
    Tom McCullough - Guitar/Vocals
For those who are not familiar with the Graveyard band, they were based in Shreveport. It consisted of the three Graves brothers, who had been playing together since they were toddlers, and as such were a telepathically tight unit. The fourth member was Tommy McCullough, an incredible guitar player who fit right in like another brother, and who would join the TULSA band the following year, and on to many more great gigs afterwards.
Here’s the story of this recording. On Saturday afternoon Feb. 22 1975, the guys from Graveyard came into SEVCO (a Hi-Fi - electronics store in Tulsa) looking for an adapter or a fix for a broken cable or something. I helped them with their problem, and as we talked about the band and their music, the idea of me running their sound system for the Whisker’s gig was discussed.
Their P.A. system at the time consisted of a couple of Voice of the Theatre speakers in white plywood cabinets, a crusty old Crown DC-150 amplifier, and a four-channel Shure M-67 turn-knob mixer for the four vocal microphones. Also, there were no stage monitors of any kind. I decided it would be a good idea to record the show, so I brought along a Dokorder four channel reel-to-reel recorder, a couple of microphones, and a Shure M-688 stereo turn-knob mixer. There were no instrument mics. - no drum mics., nothing but the four vocal mics.
Their stage volume was incredible. With two Marshall stacks cranked to 11, Gary’s Ampeg bass rig thundering away, and Glen bashing the hell out of the drum kit, sitting in the audience was like that Maxell poster… (Google it if you need to).
I took a feed from the P.A. vocal mixer, and the two recording mics. placed on either side of the stage into the stereo mixer to feed the recorder. So in the stereo image, that’s Tag’s guitar on the right side, and Tommy’s guitar on the left side. This is the first of three sets I recorded that night, and the first of several gigs that I ran sound for them, and those were also recorded.
This was the first time I ever recorded a live performance, and I’m still amazed at how well it turned out!

I don't know who you are but keep em coming . I grew up in Tulsa but was a couple of years too Young too get into whiskers at this time. I had heard about this band . I had heard that they played at a place called the jail or something like that . Being a 14 yr old kid I thought with a name like Graveyard they had to be some bad ass band . I was wondering who the guitarist for the band Tulsa was. Dude was hot on that one. Do you know if he still plays around or not? You're channel is taking be back to the innocent days. Thank you.

Thanks for your comment! Graveyard played at several venues in the Tulsa area in the '70s. We did play the Jail Saloon, which was at 6327 East 11th street, in 1975 and I have some recordings that I'm working on from that gig. Actually, I have a number of Graveyard recordings of both live shows and studio tracks that I could post if anyone is interested in hearing them.
An interesting note about this Whiskers show - In the audience that night was Roger Linn, who was Leon Russell's studio engineer, and he invited the band back to Leon's studio which was in the basement of his Maple Ridge mansion. We recorded four songs there for a demo, and then did overdubs and final mixes at the Church Studio to finish the tracks. Big fun!
Tom McCullough lives in Louisiana, and is still playing and recording...

As with tulsa shred, I was too young when they were playing Shreveport in the 70s. Sadly, Tag passed away in 2011. Glen is still around and playing. Would it be possible to get a set list for this one.? Thanks
